Divorce and children.

The divorce rate in the United States is currently half the rate of marriages. Whether this rate will continue is not known. Millions of American children have already experienced their parents' divorce and millions more are likely to share the experience in the future. This makes divorce a problem that frequently appears in a pediatrician's patient population. Most children of divorce will experience it at the least as a potent transient stress that disrupts virtually all aspects of their lives. Many will accommodate to their new life circumstances successfully, but a substantial percentage w

Estimating the prevalence of school refusal and school-related fears. A Venezuelan sample.

This study investigated the prevalence of school refusal and school-related fears in a sample of 1034 Venezuelan children from 3 to 14 years of age. Fear surveys were administered to children older than 9 years and to the younger children's parents. In addition, parents and teachers completed questionnaires regarding the children's other behavior problems, and teachers reported on the children's school achievement and attendance. Although a significant proportion (17.7 per cent) of the children expressed intense fears of school, only rarely were such fears combined with high absenteeism or wit

The Role of Identity in Positive Alcohol Use Attitudes, Risky Drinking, and Alcohol-Related Problems Among Racially/Ethnically Diverse Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Positive attitudes toward alcohol use, risky drinking, and the likelihood of experiencing alcohol-related problems tend to increase during adolescence. Although prior studies suggest that identity coherence protects against, and identity confusion increases, vulnerability to negative health-related outcomes, less is known about how identity coherence and confusion uniquely predict trajectories of positive alcohol-use attitudes, risky drinking, as well as the onset of alcohol-related problems across adolescence-particularly among racially/ethnically diverse youth. In the present study,

Who Panics When They Think of Work?

Work anxiety is a specific mental health problem that is often associated with sick leave and negative work perception. Until now, there has been hardly any evidence on the more general psychological characteristics of work-anxious people, i.e., in terms of life values, life satisfaction, work coping, and activity level. Learning more about these cognitive and behavioral characteristics is, however, of interest for preventive action. This present study investigates these characteristics in people with and without mental health problems and with and without work anxiety comparatively. A represe

Relationship between sensation seeking, alcohol problems and bulimic symptoms: a community-based, longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: The association of bulimic symptoms with sensation seeking is uncertain; however, both behaviors have been linked to alcohol problems. We assessed in a longitudinal, community-based setting whether sensation seeking in adolescence is associated with bulimic symptoms in early adulthood, also accounting for alcohol problems. METHODS: Finnish men (N = 2000) and women (N = 2467) born between 1974-1979 completed Zuckerman's sensation seeking scale (SSS) at age 18. Alcohol problems (Malmö-modified Michigan alcoholism screening test (Mm-MAST) and bulimic symptoms [eating disorder inventory-

Increases in social support co-occur with decreases in depressive symptoms and substance use problems among adults in permanent supportive housing: an 18-month longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Social support is a well-known protective factor against depressive symptoms and substance use problems, but very few studies have examined its protective effects among residents of permanent supportive housing (PSH), a housing program for people with a history of chronic homelessness. We utilized unconditional latent growth curve models (LGCMs) and parallel process growth models to describe univariate trajectories of social support, depressive symptoms, and substance use problems and to examine their longitudinal associations in a large sample of adults residing in PSH. METHODS:

The longitudinal effect of early-life sensation seeking on gambling and gambling problems among Puerto Rican young adults.

Sensation seeking has been proposed as a risk factor for gambling and gambling problems; however, existing evidence for a relationship between sensation seeking and gambling behaviors is inconclusive and data are lacking for emerging adults and racial and ethnic minorities. In this longitudinal study, we explored the association between developmental trajectories of sensation seeking in childhood and adolescence and gambling and gambling problems in early adulthood in individuals of Puerto Rican origin. Gambling data were collected during 2014-2018 from a subsample of participants in the Boric

Testing Cross-Sectional and Prospective Mediators of Internalized Heterosexism on Heavy Drinking, Alcohol Problems, and Psychological Distress Among Heavy Drinking Men Who Have Sex With Men.

OBJECTIVE: Minority stress theory is one of the primary theories used to understand substance use among lesbian, gay, and bisexual populations. This study tested whether drinking to cope with stress (DTC), loneliness, and gay community participation (GCP) mediated the relationship between one type of minority stress (i.e., internalized heterosexism) and behavioral health outcomes. METHOD: Using secondary data analysis and the PROCESS procedure, relationships between internalized heterosexism, the mediators (DTC, loneliness, and GCP), and outcomes (heavy drinking, alcohol problems, and psychol

Health education programmes to improve foot self-care practices and foot problems among older people with diabetes: a systematic review.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of health education programmes to improve foot self-care practices and foot problems among older people with diabetes. BACKGROUND: The complications of diabetes among older people are a major health concern. Foot problems such as neuropathy, ulcer and ultimately amputation are a great burden on older people with diabetes. Diabetes foot education programmes can influence the behaviour of older people in practising foot self-care and controlling the foot problems. However, the educational approaches used by the educators are different. Therefore,

Relationship between sleep problems and health-related quality of life among pediatric liver transplant recipients.

Among adult liver transplant recipients (LTRs), sleep disturbances and fatigue are common. Sleep problems following pediatric liver transplantation may contribute to daytime fatigue and lower health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the impact of sleep problems on the HRQOL of pediatric LTRs using validated measures. Participants included 47 LTRs. Mean age of the LTRs was 10.9 ± 4.6 years, and mean time since transplantation was 6.2 ± 3.9 years. The primary indication for transplantation was biliary atresia (51%). According to parent report

Glutathione, Vitamin C, and Cysteine Use in Autistic Children With Disruptive Behavior: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Crossover Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication differences and restricted interests. One proposed biologic mechanism underlying ASD is oxidative stress, leading to the clinical use of glutathione based on anecdotal reports of improved behavior in autistic children. In this pilot study, we tested this observation using a randomized clinical trial format to collect preliminary data on glutathione safety and efficacy. METHODS: Glutathione and glutathione in combination with vitamin C and N-acetylcysteine (Trio) were teste

Cognitive Rehabilitation and Exposure/Sorting Therapy for Late-Life Hoarding: Effects on Neuropsychological Performance.

OBJECTIVES: Hoarding disorder (HD) is characterized by urges to save items, difficulty discarding possessions, and excessive clutter and has been associated with executive functioning deficits. A randomized controlled trial comparing Cognitive Rehabilitation and Exposure/Sorting Therapy (CREST) with a care management control condition demonstrated the efficacy of CREST in reducing hoarding symptoms in older adults. The purpose of the current study was to assess whether CREST may also lead to improved executive functioning. METHOD: All participants were administered a neurocognitive battery at

Maternal immune responses and obstetrical outcomes of pregnant women with COVID-19 and possible health risks of offspring.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has spread rapidly across the world. The vast majority of patients with COVID-19 manifest mild to moderate symptoms but may progress to severe cases or even mortalities. Young adults of reproductive age are the most affected population by SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, there is no consensus yet if pregnancy contributes to the severity of COVID-19. Initial studies of pregnant women have found that COVID-19 significantly increases the risk of preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, and low birth weight, which have been associated with non-comm

Does MAOA increase susceptibility to prenatal stress in young children?

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated a gene-by-prenatal-environment interaction whereby the monoamine oxidase A gene (MAOA) modified the impact of prenatal tobacco exposure (PTE) on adolescent disruptive behavior (DB), with the MAOA risk genotype varying by sex. We extend this work by examining whether this mechanism is evident with another common adversity, prenatal stress exposure (PSE), and whether sex differences are present earlier in development in closer proximity to exposure. METHODS: Participants were 281 mothers and their 285 children derived from a prenatal cohort with in-depth p

Use of context in pragmatic language comprehension by children with Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism.

Utilizing relevance theory, this study investigated the ability of children with Asperger syndrome (AS) and high-functioning autism (HFA) to use context when answering questions and when giving explanations for their correct answers. Three groups participated in this study: younger AS/HFA group (age 7-9, n=16), older AS/HFA group (age 10-12, n=23) and a normally functioning control group (age 7-9, n=23). The results indicated that the younger AS/HFA group did less well when answering contextually demanding questions compared to the control group, and the performance of the older AS/HFA group f

Adolescent wellness. Facilitating compliance in social morbidities.

The establishment of a well adolescent schedule needs to be developed similar to the scheduled clinical visits in pediatric care. However, providing adolescent wellness visits without appropriate financial reimbursement for time expended and without increased provider training may make "well" adolescent visits an unrealistic expectation. However, two major trends will significantly impact on the future of adolescent health care. These include a sharp increase in numbers of adolescents beginning in 1990 and the poverty within the adolescent population. These data suggest that obstacles, whether
