Excitatory amino acid (EAA) and cholinergic neurotransmission in the spinal cord of urethan-anesthetized rats was investigated to assess mechanisms regulating sympathetic activity after spinal cord injury. Blockade of EAA transmission by intrathecal injection of kynurenic acid decreased arterial blood pressure by 24 +/- 4 mmHg, heart rate by 15 +/- 10 beats/min, and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) by 85 +/- 4% in intact rats. Dural sinus thrombosis has been hypothesized as a possible cause of dural arteriovenous fistulas (AVF's). The pathogenesis and evolution from thrombosis to actual development of an AVF are still unknown. In this study, we examined the pineal adrenergic-stimulated cyclic nucleotide responses in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and their genetic control, Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). The efficacy of vinpocetine (CAS 42971-09-5) to prevent gastric mucosal damage induced by several noxious agents and its antisecretory effect were studied in rats.
