[Kearns-Sayre syndrome: two case reports].

Two cases in which patients had progressive loss of visual acuity in four years and eight months respectively are described. Clinical examination revealed fundoscopic alterations of the retina, pigment epithelium and choriocapillaris showing marked atrophy. The clinical picture resembles Kearns-Sayre syndrome. Etiological investigation is fundamental, because most of time this condition is associated with more serious systemic complications which need specific care.

Retinal vascular changes in congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium.

The overlying retinal blood vessels were abnormal in five cases of congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium. This illustrated the well-recognized association between outer retinal degeneration and obliteration of the overlying retinal vasculature. The proposed pathophysiological mechanisms, however, seem inadequate to explain completely the morphological changes of the retinal blood vessels in the presence of atrophy of the outer retina.

Surgical approach to lamellar sclerouvectomy for posterior uveal melanomas: the 1986 Schoenberg lecture.

We describe a technique of surgically removing melanomas that involve the ciliary body and/or the choroid, while leaving intact the outer portion of the sclera and the overlying sensory retina. This procedure, called a partial lamellar sclerouvectomy, can be subclassified as a partial lamellar sclerocyclochoroidectomy in the case of ciliochoroidal melanomas, and as a partial lamellar sclerochoroidectomy in the case of pure choroidal melanomas.

Ocular polyarteritis nodosa. Report of a case.

A patient with bilateral amaurosis as a complication to polyarteritis nodosa is presented. He developed affection of the central retinal arteries and the arteries supplying the optic discs followed by retinal and optic atrophy. After one month no vessels could be observed neither in the retinae nor at the optic discs. The importance of early diagnosis and aggressive immunosuppressive treatment is stressed.

[Variation in the expressivity of the ocular retardation gene in mice].

Variation in the expressivity was studied of the gene for ocular retardation (or) in mice. It is shown that the gene or suppresses with a high expressivity the growth of the optic vesicle in homozygotes, this resulting in anophthalmia and microphthalmia with aphakia. In cases of low expressivity, the gene or inhibits the growth of retina anlage, this leading to microphthalmia with a cataract of the lens. Variation in the expressivity of the gene or is due to an influence of modifier genes.

Saccades orchestrate intraocular glucose dynamics to shape visual responses in birds.

Birds exhibit remarkable vision despite lacking the classical retinal vasculature, raising an enigmatic question about how avascular retinas fulfill energy demands necessary for sight. Avian saccades couple rapid gaze shifts with cyclotorsional oscillations. In pigeons, we show that these saccades orchestrate intraocular metabolic dynamics and visual processing. Using combined measurements of eye movements, intraocular glucose, and neuronal activity in retinorecipient brain regions, we found that saccades induce intraocular glucose fluctuations that are closely linked to changes in visual resp

Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Interpretation of Electroretinography (ERG) Studies.

Electroretinograms are an important diagnostic tool to measure retinal electrical activity. However, their interpretation, done by sub-specialised ophthalmologists, can be not only time consuming but also challenging to obtain due to availability. In recent years, studies have investigated the use of artificial intelligence in the analysis of electroretinograms. This systematic review summarises the accuracy of artificial intelligence in interpreting electroretinograms and appraises the studies included. The review comprises primary, peer-reviewed published studies that determined accuracy of

Retinal development.

The vertebrate retina is a striking example of cellular coordination, where complex molecular signals and precise cellular interactions work together to convert light into neural information. This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of the key stages in retinal development, beginning with optic vesicle morphogenesis and the spatial patterning events that establish distinct retinal domains. We investigate the molecular pathways that orchestrate the specification and regionalization of these domains, guide retinal progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation, and ensure the generation

Peripheral retinal degenerations: A review of peripheral optical coherence tomography applications in their diagnosis and visualization.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has transformed retinal imaging, primarily focusing on the posterior pole; however, its application in assessing peripheral retinal lesions is an evolving field. Recent advances in widefield (WF) and ultra-widefield (UWF) OCT technology have significantly expanded the ability to image the peripheral retina, allowing for improved detection and characterization of peripheral retinal lesions. We evaluate the effectiveness of OCT in identifying peripheral retinal lesions, assessing vitreoretinal adhesions and tractions, aiding differential diagnosis, and guiding

Insights into retinal remodeling in retinal degenerative disease.

The retina is a highly organized sensory structure responsible for capturing and processing visual information. Visual computation begins at the first synapse between photoreceptors, bipolar cells, and horizontal cells, before involving amacrine and ganglion cells to generate vision. Retinal degeneration disrupts the precise neural architecture required for vision, initiating a maladaptive process known as retinal remodeling. Photoreceptor degeneration in diseases, like retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration, induces retinal remodeling, but good evidence shows glaucoma

Pupil wobble in point-scanning retinal optical coherence tomography systems.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems utilize 2D scanning methods to acquire reflectance-based volumetric images of samples, such as the human retina, with micrometer-scale depth resolution. A common method for performing this scanning at high speeds is to use a pair of sequential, single-axis galvanometer scanners. An undesired effect of using separated scanners is the variation in the beam position at the pupil plane, a phenomenon known as beam wander or pupil wobble. This can lead to loss of signal and vignetting artifacts in the resulting images. To overcome these limitations, we prop

A practical introduction to wavelet analysis in electroretinography.

PURPOSE: To provide a conceptual understanding of the continuous and discrete wavelet transforms (CWT, DWT) for clinical electroretinography (ERG) analysis, and how these methods uncover time-frequency features that complement traditional time-domain analysis. METHODS: A technical overview without the use of mathematical formula describing the basics of CWT and DWT and implementation considerations. We also review an example of four standard ISCEV full-field ERG (ffERG) recordings from a healthy 32-year-old male. RESULTS: Wavelet analysis uncovered time-frequency signatures absent in raw tra

Bayesian consolidation of retinal micro(nano)plastic hypothesis: From existential confirmation to spatial-phenotypic inference.

Recent empirical confirmation of polymeric micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in human retinal tissue marks a decisive epistemic shift-from theoretical plausibility to verified biological occurrence. Five months before this discovery, a Bayesian hypothesis framework published in BioSystems proposed that MNPs may exist in the human retina and could plausibly explain certain imaging anomalies, despite the absence of direct evidence. The present work extends that framework by formalizing how definitive empirical detection collapses existential uncertainty and advances the Bayesian model toward its ne

AI explainability in oculomics: How it works, its role in establishing trust, and what still needs to be addressed.

Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) have seen a proliferation of algorithms that are now capable of predicting a range of systemic diseases from retinal images. Unlike traditional retinal disease detection AI models which are trained on well-recognised retinal biomarkers, systemic disease detection or "oculomics" models use a range of often poorly characterised retinal biomarkers to arrive at their predictions. As the retinal phenotype that oculomics models use may not be intuitive, clinicians have to rely on the developers' explanations of how these algorithms work in order to

Morphological Features of the Pecten Oculi in the Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus).

This study aimed to investigate the macroscopic, light microscopic (LM) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) characteristics of the pecten oculi in common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus). A total of six eyeballs from three common kestrels were used as the study material. The examination revealed that the bulbus oculi was spherical in shape and its diameter exceeded the axial-global length. In the equatorial section of the eyeball, the pecten oculi were observed to be situated on the retina layer where the optic nerve enters the eyeball, showing a posterior-to-anterior distribution. The pecten
