Artificial intelligence (AI)-based dermoscopic analysis is increasingly being used to assist dermatologists in the early detection and monitoring of pigmented skin lesions. However, discrepancies between AI-generated assessments and clinical evaluation may occur. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the level of agreement between dermatologist assessment and AI-generated analysis in the dermoscopic evaluation of skin lesions. The study included 71 dermoscopic cases examined at two time points between September 2024 and January 2026 at a dermatologic clinic in Tirana, Albania. Dermoscopic

BACKGROUND: Treating atrophic acne scars in Asian skin (Fitzpatrick types III-V) is challenging due to the elevated risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). While picosecond lasers with fractional handpiece treatment are effective, the optimal balance between fluence, passes, clinical outcome, and downtime remains controversial.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-years-old Asian male with moderate atrophic acne scars was treated with a 532-nm picosecond Nd:YAG laser using a fractional handpiece. An ultra-low fluence of 0.03 J/cm2 was applied (8-mm spot size, 4 passes, 2,511 total pulses).

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare and aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin, typically affecting elderly patients and arising in sun-damaged areas. It often presents as a painless, firm nodule and has a high recurrence rate. Superficial spreading melanoma is a malignant neoplasm of melanocytes that arises in intermittently sun-exposed areas and progresses through radial and vertical growth phases. While both tumors are individually well-documented, their synchronous occurrence is exceedingly rare. We report a case of a 74-year-old male with a history of Merkel cell carcinoma who presented

Acne (syn. acne vulgaris) is a common inflammatory skin disorder associated with puberty and adolescence. The disease is characterized by comedoneous lesions, papules, pustules, and nodules that are mostly found on the face. These lesions are caused by intricate interactions between the pilosebaceous unit and the Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) bacteria. Unhealthy acne and its aftereffects, like pigment changes and scarring, have a detrimental impact on one's quality of life. Recent years have seen a sharp increase in the approval of nucleic acid therapies (NATs), such as antisense oligonucleot

RATIONALE: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital venous malformation, it had been found to be caused by mutations of the phosphatidylinositol 4, 5-diphosphate 3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha (PIK3CA) gene. Currently KTS is defined as a triad of skin wine pigmented spots, varicose veins and malformations of the lower extremities, and hypertrophy of bone and soft tissue, involving urinary system up to 6% to 30%. When the urinary system is involved, KTS is often presented as painless massive gross hematuria.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most common autoimmune bullous disease: it most commonly affects individuals over 70 years old and impacts severely on their quality of life. BP represents a paradigm for an organ-specific autoimmune disease and is characterized by circulating IgG autoantibodies to hemidesmosomal components: BP180 and BP230. While the crucial role of these autoantibodies in triggering BP inflammatory cascade is fully acknowledged, many ancillary etiological mechanisms need to be elucidated yet. Cutaneous melanoma is due to a malignant transformation of skin melanocytes, that prod

Melanogenesis is the process where skin pigment melanin is produced through tyrosinase activity. Overproduction of melanin causes skin disorders such as freckles, spots, and hyperpigmentation. Myricetin 3-O-galactoside (M3G) is a dietary flavonoid with reported bioactivities. M3G was isolated from Limonium tetragonum and its anti-melanogenic properties were investigated in α-melanocyte stimulating hormone-stimulated B16F10 melanoma cells. The in vitro anti-melanogenic capacity of M3G was confirmed by inhibited tyrosinase and melanin production. M3G-mediated suppression of melanogenic proteins,

Cnidium japonicum is a biennial halophyte found in the salt marshes and shores of Korea and widely used in traditional Korean medicine as an ingredient. This study investigated and compared the antimelanogenic effect of solventpartitioned fractions of C. japonicum extract (CJEFs) in a B16F10 mouse melanoma cell model, focusing on tyrosinase activity and production. Melanogenesis is the process in which skin pigment melanin is produced through tyrosinase activity. Overproduction of melanin is the primary reason behind several skin disorders such as freckles, spots, and hyperpigmentation. The an

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of idiopathic atrophoderma of Pasini and Pierini (IAPP) relies on typical clinical features, particularly distinctive pigmented ovular/round depressed plaques. Histologic examination often reveals no obvious changes, but patterns of collagen distribution, using multiphoton imaging and second harmonic generation can help track hidden details of tissue organization contributing to atrophy.
OBJECTIVE: To identify histologic features that distinguish IAPP from unaffected skin.
METHODS: Eleven patients were included for conventional analyses. Masson trichrome- and Unna-T

BACKGROUND: Dematiaceous, or dark-pigmented, fungi are known to cause infections such as phaeohyphomycosis, chromoblastomycosis, and mycetoma. These fungi are becoming increasingly important opportunistic pathogens in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTR). We present a retrospective chart review of 27 SOTR who developed phaeohyphomycosis infections post transplant from 1988 to 2009.
METHODS: Cases were reviewed for fungal species isolated, date and source of culture, immunosuppressive and fungal therapy used, and outcome. The majority of isolates obtained were from the skin and soft tissue

Albinism represents a group of genetic disorders with a broad spectrum of hypopigmentary phenotypes dependent on the genetic background of the patients. Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) patients have little or no pigment in their eyes, skin and hair, whereas ocular albinism (OA) primarily presents the ocular symptoms, and the skin and hair color may vary from near normal to very fair. Mutations in genes directly or indirectly regulating melanin production are responsible for different forms of albinism with overlapping clinical features. In this study, 27 albinistic individuals from 24 families w

Erythema ab igne (EAI) is a reticulated pigmented dermatosis, which is caused by repetative and prolonged moderate heat exposure insufficient to produce a burn. We report here three cases of EAI in female patients with eating disorders (two with anorexia nervosa and one with bulimia nervosa) who presented with EAI on the abdomen as well as on the thighs and forearms. The clinical picture was characterized by asymptomatic reticular and macular hyperpigmentation and telangiectases without sequamation. The patients admitted the frequent and sometimes over night use of hot water bottles with the a

BACKGROUND: Maternal vaginal colonisation with Group B Streptococcus (GBS, Streptococcus agalactiae) at the time of delivery can cause vertical transmission to the neonate. GBS is the leading cause of sepsis, meningitis and pneumonia in the infants. Asymptomatic colonisation of the vagina with GBS varies with the geographical location.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 2009 at Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Lower vaginal swabs were obtained from 200 pregnant women at the time of admission in the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department for term, normal vagina

Giant cell tumors of tendon sheath (GCTTS) represent a localised form of pigmented villonodular synovitis. They are usually found in the hand (80% of cases) where it represents the second most common tumor of the soft parts after the ganglion cyst. Its surgical treatment is sometimes difficult because of local extension and the invasion of vital digital structures. We report a retrospective study over 10 years of 32 cases of GCTTS with an average age of 35 years and a sex-ratio of 1. The reason for consultation was the presence of a digital mass, associated with an impairment of finger flexion

BACKGROUND: Partial regression of primary cutaneous malignant melanoma is not uncommon and may predict a higher likelihood of metastasis and decreased survival. Complete histologic regression of a primary cutaneous melanoma is a rarer occurrence, with only 34 cases reported in the English-language or English language-summarized literature.
OBSERVATION: We detail 4 cases of complete histologic regression of primary cutaneous melanoma, discovered at presentation with metastatic disease. A pigmented lesion or its remnant, coupled with historical information, was strongly suggestive of cutaneous

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous lichen planus in children is a rare entity. To study its specific clinical and therapeutic features, we report on 8 cases seen in 5 years in a pediatric dermatology clinic. In parallel, this study addresses the role of HBV immunization campaigns in childhood lichen planus.
OBSERVATIONS: Six boys and two girls with a diffuse form of lichen planus were studied. The mean age was 11 years. Four children were of skin types V and VI. Lesions followed Blaschko's lines in two children. One case was associated with atopic dermatitis. In half the cases--the most recent--the erup

Mutations at the murine dominant white spotting (KitW) and steel (MgfSl) loci, encoding c-Kit receptor kinase and its ligand respectively, exert developmental defects on hematopoietic cells, melanocytes, germ cells and interstitial cells of Cajal. The expression patterns of steel factor (SLF) observed in the skin and gonads suggest that SLF mediates a migratory or a chemotactic signal for c-Kit-expressing stem cells (melanocyte precursors and primordial germ cells). By targeting expression of SLF to epidermal keratinocytes in mice, we observed extended distribution of melanocytes in a number o

BACKGROUND: The usual methods of scabies diagnosis include microscopic identification of the mites and their eggs and feces in skin scrapings. In many cases, the results of microscopic examination can be negative owing to the low number of parasites present in the cornified layer. Epiluminescence microscopy (ELM) is an in vivo technique that allows a detailed inspection of the skin, from the surface to the superficial papillary dermis. This is where the scabies mite lives. In this study, we evaluate the applicability and the usefulness of ELM for in vivo diagnosis of scabies.
