A 67-year-old male smoker presented with hemoptysis. Chest computed tomography showed an emphysematous cyst and air-fluid levels in the left lower lobe of the lung. A lobectomy was performed. Intraoperatively, the lesion was found to be an intralobar sequestration. Histopathology showed adenocarcinoma within the sequestrated lobe. This case suggests the need for criteria for a thorough diagnostic work-up in patients diagnosed with pulmonary sequestration, to rule out carcinoma as a distinct clinicopathological entity.

This article describes a rare presentation of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, mimicking an ectopic pregnancy secreting beta-hCG protein in a 47 year old female smoker, who was treated with Methotrexate and subsequently curettage, tubectomy and right ovariectomy, because of suspected hydatidiform mole. This document presents a rare and chaotic case of lung cancer and reviews the differential diagnosis of an increased level of the beta-hCG marker and the therapeutic approach to these cases.

Peribiliary cysts are an incidental finding in patients with advanced liver disease. They were found to be common in fibrocystic disorders such as autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and polycystic liver disease, as well as cirrhotic livers. They result from obstruction-induced cystic dilatation of the peribiliary glands. We report in this article the case of 2 patients, aged 41 and 71, smokers and chronic alcoholics, admitted for febrile cholestatic jaundice, for which MRI revealed the presence of peribiliary cysts.

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO), otherwise known as Buerger's disease, is a rare, non-atherosclerotic inflammatory vasculopathy that typically affects small and medium-sized arteries of the distal extremities. Smoking is believed to be integral to the pathogenesis, as TAO primarily affects young male smokers. The disease is characterized by extremity pain secondary to ischemia that may progress to ulceration, gangrene, and amputation. Involvement of the reproductive system is uncommon. Here, we offer a case of TAO presenting as a testicular mass lesion.

Hookah pipe (HP) smoking is perceived as a harmless activity, enjoyed by young adults and high school-going children. Awareness of the health impact of recreational habits, and their intersection with new social norms in the COVID-era, requires critical review. We describe a case series of young HP smokers presenting with secondary polycythaemia with significant clinical sequelae necessitating extensive work-up. HP smoking may lead to acute and chronic carbon monoxide intoxication, with resultant secondary polycythaemia and complications including provoked thrombosis.

The aim of this paper was presentation of voice estimation in smokers, who did not complain of voice disorders. The examination was performed in 20 patients with history of chronic tobacco using (at least 20 years). The videolaryngostroboscopy and acoustic voice analysis were performed. The specific changes as in organic dysphonia were found in larynx in both examinations. The most important finding in acoustic voice analysis was abnormal parameter describing vFo--Fundamental Frequency Variation and lower comparing to normal voices fundamental frequency.

This study reviews more than fifty papers dealing with pressor responses from noncardioselective beta-blockers. It is concluded that the responses are usually mild. They occur mainly in situations of increased sympathetic activity. Therefore some patients seem to be at risk, eg, patients with unstable diabetes type 1, sportsmen performing isometric exercise, and heavy smokers. In orthostatic hypotension, noncardioselective beta-blockers may be beneficial. Cardiac output tends, however, to decrease, and patients with orthostatic hypotension will probably not benefit from this effect.

Cardiovascular risk profile was compared in 765 Italian HIV-infected outpatients enrolled in 2005 and in 765 individually age-matched and sex-matched patients enrolled in 2011. Median Framingham risk score was 8.6% in 2005 vs. 7.9% in 2011 (P = 0.04); metabolic syndrome was present in 40.3% vs. 33.4% (P = 0.006). Blood glucose, triglycerides, prevalence of smokers, and lipodystrophy were all significantly lower in 2011 (all P < 0.0001). Cardiovascular risk improved over a 6-year period in Italian HIV-infected patients.

A number of reports including a recent publication in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage have suggested that smokers have a lower than expected prevalence of osteoarthritis (OA) than nonsmokers. We review the evidence linking smoking with OA, suggest approaches whereby the direct and indirect effects of smoking on OA might be distinguished, highlight two diseases, ulcerative colitis and Parkinson's disease, where smoking is protective, discuss mechanisms by which nicotine might act and lastly explore the association of smoking with enhanced musculoskeletal pain.
