Environmental enrichment during social isolation prevents behavioral impairments and morphological alterations of the midcingulate cortex in aggressive socially isolated mice.

Social isolation (SI) in rodents affects neuronal integrity and behavioral regulation. On the other hand, enriched environment (EE) has been reported to yield beneficial behavioral and neural effects in group-housed rodents. The midcingulate cortex (MCC) is a brain region that is increasingly implicated in socioemotional regulation; however, whether SI induces structural alterations in this region, and whether EE can mitigate such effects, remains unclear. In the present study, we examined the behavioral consequences of SI and the associated dendritic alterations in MCC pyramidal neurons. Furt

Telehealth-Enabled Transitional Care Across Inpatient-to-Outpatient Settings in Patients with Diabetes: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The inpatient-to-outpatient transition is a critical and vulnerable period for patients with diabetes, frequently marked by fragmented communication, incomplete follow-up, and preventable readmissions. Telehealth has emerged as a promising approach to bridge this gap; however, the design and implementation of telehealth-enabled transitional care models have not been systematically characterized. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to map existing evidence on telehealth-enabled transitional care for patients with diabetes; characterize intervention components, modalities, and targ

Transition shock and perceived patient safety culture among newly graduated nurses: a latent profile and chained mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Newly graduated registered nurses (NGRNs) are particularly vulnerable to transition shock (TS), which may adversely affect perceived patient safety culture (PSC). However, the heterogeneity of TS and the psychological mechanisms through which it influences PSC remain insufficiently understood. AIM: To explore latent profiles of TS among NGRNs and to examine their associations with perceived PSC, with a focus on the mediating roles of psychological capital (PsyCap) and second victim experience (SVE), in order to inform targeted interventions for supporting NGRNs and enhancing PSC.

Optimizing developmental outcomes in premature infants through a multidisciplinary approach to care.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth remains the leading risk factor for perinatal mortality and morbidity. Infants born preterm miss critical periods of development, placing them at increased risk for a range of neurodevelopmental, motor, and sensory complications. These complex health outcomes are further compounded by biological, behavioral, and social factors, with socioeconomically disadvantaged populations disproportionally affected. As rates of preterm birth rise, and survival improves at increasingly earlier gestational ages, the demand for comprehensive and accessible care for this high-risk pop

Geriatric Migraine, Geroscience, and Sustainable Development Goals: Bridging Clinical Complexity and Public Health Priorities.

Background: Migraine in older adults represents an increasingly relevant yet underrecognized clinical challenge in aging societies, where multimorbidity, frailty, and polypharmacy complicate both diagnosis and management. Although traditionally considered a disorder of younger individuals, migraine frequently persists or presents after the age of 60 with atypical features, contributing to diagnostic uncertainty. Methods: This narrative review, conducted in accordance with the SANRA principles, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, clinical presentation, pathophysiology,

Effects of natural deep hypothermia on cognitive abilities in mammals: hibernators and neonates.

Mammalian hibernators, when in hibernation, often experience deep hypothermia, defined to be a core body temperature ≤ 10 °C, from which they endogenously recover when they arouse. Similarly, among the many species of small mammals that breed in cold seasons in cold geographical areas, nestlings are vulnerable to experiencing deep hypothermia, from which they can recover by the simple expedient of being rewarmed by their parents. Both hibernation and neonatal tolerance of hypothermia are generally viewed as adaptations for mammals living in cold climates. However, following recovery from these

Socioeconomic, climatic, and sanitary conditions of Brazilian municipalities and their relationship with the incidence of Zika and microcephaly.

Zika and microcephaly cases in Brazil showed uneven regional distribution, with underlying causes still unclear. Socioeconomic, climatic, and sanitary disparities may explain these patterns. This study analyzed the relationship between these factors and the occurrence of Zika virus (ZIKV) and microcephaly epidemics. Data on cases reported in 2016 were obtained from the Ministry of Health, Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, and Unified Registry for Social Programs, along with sanitary, socioeconomic, and climatic indicators. Incidence rates were calculated and smoothed using the l

Pleasure and Vulnerability: A Cross-Sectional Study on Sexualized Drug Use, Motivations and Structural Vulnerabilities Among Trans and/or Non-Binary Communities.

Sexualized drug use (SDU) is an emerging and understudied phenomenon among trans and/or non-binary populations (TNBP). This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of SDU, gender differences in the use of 14 different substances, motivations for engaging in SDU and factors associated with emotion regulation-related SDU among TNBP who reported this practice. We conducted a cross-sectional online survey with a convenience sample of 1772 participants over 15 years of age, recruited through social media accounts of LGBTIQ+ organizations and influencers and 39 gender identity units in Spain. SDU was

Physical and psychological well-being of kidney patients: a scoping review exploring the mediating or moderating role of psychological resilience.

BACKGROUND: Extensive literature has documented the psychological burden of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure. Psychological resilience, the ability to adapt to challenging life experiences, offers a critical lens for understanding the variability in how individuals experience and adapt to chronic medical conditions. We aimed to synthesize existing evidence that has explored resilience among patients with kidney diseases. METHODS: This scoping review followed the JBI Scoping Review framework. Empirical studies that measured resilience with no time restriction were considered and resil

Barriers and facilitators to adherence of infants living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa in an era of wide access to ART: a mixed-methods study.

Infants and very young children with perinatally acquired HIV are solely dependent on caregivers for achieving high levels of adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). EARTH was a prospective study of infants from sites in South Africa, Mozambique, and Mali with perinatally-acquired HIV who started ART at ≤ 90 days after diagnosis. We implemented a mixed-methods social/behavioral substudy within the EARTH clinical study. Using data reported from caregivers of children in the EARTH study, this study explored caregivers' appraisals and coping regarding the child's HIV, caregiver-reported child

Taking High-Tech to the Field: Leukemia Diagnosis in Pediatric Mexican Patients from Vulnerable and Remote Regions.

Background/Objectives: Acute leukemia, the most common childhood cancer, poses a significant public health challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to its high incidence and mortality rates. Survival rates in these regions are often lower, primarily due to delayed and inaccurate diagnoses, limited access to treatment, therapy abandonment, therapy-related toxicity, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. In Mexico, a new initiative called OncoCREAN has been developed to address this urgent need by establishing local treatment centers near pediatric patients' home cities, ensu

Problematic internet use and borderline personality features: A systematic review informed by the alternative model of personality disorders.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Associations between problematic internet use (PIU) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) have been reported, but the literature is highly heterogeneous, with some studies assessing overall BPD severity and others examining individual traits (e.g., emotional lability, impulsivity, dissociation). This review synthesizes these approaches using the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD), examining how BPD-relevant pathological personality traits (Criterion B) and impairments in self and interpersonal functioning (Criterion A) relate to PIU. METHODS: Following

Sleep quality and quality of life in patients with dermatological diseases during the war in Gaza.

Skin diseases such as psoriasis and scabies can severely impact sleep quality and quality of life (QoL), especially under extreme stress conditions such as war. During the 2024 conflict in Gaza, displacement, limited access to healthcare, and widespread trauma created a unique context in which to study these interactions. This cross-sectional study included 498 participants from three healthcare centers across Gaza. Data on dermatological diagnoses, sleep quality (PSQI), quality of life (DLQI/CDLQI), pain levels, and displacement history were collected. Statistical analyses were performed to e

Structures of survival: Syndemic pathways to care among people with HIV involved with the criminal legal system.

BACKGROUND: Criminal legal system (CLS) involvement intersects syndemically with HIV, mental illness, substance use, and exposure to violence. Mass incarceration remains both a cause and consequence of racialized health inequities in the U.S. The post-release period is particularly vulnerable for people living with HIV (PLWH) who experience CLS involvement, underscoring the need for care models attuned to their structural and psychosocial contexts. This study examines how syndemic pathways and cumulative life experiences shape HIV care trajectories among people with HIV involved with the CLS.
