Climatic controls on water-use efficiency and nitrogen acquisition of Astragalus on southwestern Tibetan Plateau.

BACKGROUND: The southwestern Tibetan Plateau (TP) is characterized by cold and dry alpine grasslands, yet how plants and soil nitrogen cycles adapt to conditions that are drier and colder than other parts of the TP remain unclear. We measured δ13C and δ15N in Astragalus, a widespread N-fixing legume, and soils along a 3500-5000 m transect in the southwestern TP. RESULTS: Plant δ13C and inferred intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE, 85.6-114.2 μmol CO2 mol-1 H2O) were primarily controlled by growing-season temperature (GST), with SEM showing a significant direct effect of GST on iWUE (standard…

Nitrogen Fertilizers Technologies for Corn in Two Yield Environments in South Brazil.

Improvements in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in corn production systems are necessary, to decrease the economic and environmental losses caused by loss of ammonia volatilization (NH3-N). The objective was to study different nitrogen (N) fertilizer technologies through characterization of N sources, NH3-N volatilization losses, and their effects on the nutrient concentration and yield of corn grown in clayey and sandy soils in south Brazil. The treatments consisted of a control without N application as a topdressing, three conventional N sources (urea, ammonium sulfate, and ammonium nitrate + …

Salisbury biochar did not affect the mobility or speciation of lead in kaolin in a short-term laboratory study.

Salisbury biochar (produced from British broadleaf hardwood) with two different particle sizes (≤2mm and ≤0.15mm) was applied on a kaolin with three different lead (Pb(2+)) contamination levels (50mg/kg, 300mg/kg and 1000mg/kg) at the dosage of 1% in w/w. The short-term impact of biochar on the mobility and speciation of Pb(2+) in the kaolin was investigated using attenuation periods of 1, 7 and 28 days. The leachability and extractability of Pb(2+) in carbonic acid leaching and EDTA extraction tests as well as the speciation of Pb(2+) in soils were not significantly affected by biochar treatm…

Characterization of efficient plant-growth-promoting bacteria isolated from Sulla coronaria resistant to cadmium and to other heavy metals.

The inoculation of plants with plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria has become a priority in the phytoremediation of heavy-metal-contaminated soils. A total of 82 bacteria were isolated from Sulla coronaria root nodules cultivated on four soil samples differently contaminated by heavy metals. The phenotypic characterization of these isolates demonstrated an increased tolerance to cadmium reaching 4.1mM, and to other metals, including Zn, Cu and Ni. Polymerase Chain Reaction/Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR/RFLP) analysis showed a large diversity represented by genera related to Ag…

Effect of nitrate and ammonium fertilization on Zn, Pb, and Cd phytostabilization by Populus euramericana Dorskamp in contaminated technosol.

This study aimed at assessing the effect of nitrogen addition under two forms, nitrate and ammonium, on the stabilization of Zn, Pb, and Cd by Populus euramericana Dorskamp grown in contaminated soils for 35 days under controlled conditions. Temporal changes in the soil pore water (SPW) were monitored for pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total dissolved concentrations of metals in the soils rhizosphere. Rhizospheric SPW pH decreased gradually with NH4(+) addition and increased with NO3(-) addition up to one unit, while it slightly decreased initially then increased for the untreated con…

Significance of metal exchange in EDDS-flushing column experiments.

Chelating agents have been widely studied for extracting heavy metals from contaminated soils, and the effectiveness of EDDS ([S,S]-ethylene-diamine-disuccinic acid) has aroused extensive attention because of its biodegradability in the natural environment. However, in the course of EDDS-flushing, metal exchange of newly extracted metal-EDDS complexes with other sorbed metals and mineral cations may result in metal re-adsorption on the soil surfaces. Therefore, this study investigated the relative significance of metal exchange under different travel distances of chelant complexes, characteris…

Functional outcome after operation for Hirschsprung disease--transanal vs transabdominal approach.

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that the extensive transanal dissection in transanal endorectal pull-through (TEPT) for Hirschsprung disease (HD) can impair the anal sphincters in neonates and thereby cause incontinence. Theoretically, transabdominal endorectal pull-through might have less impact on the sphincters. The aim of this study was to compare functional outcome in HD patients operated with either TEPT or laparotomy-assisted endorectal pull-through (LEPT) with particular focus on soiling and fecal incontinence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Anorectal function in 52 children older than 3 …

Inoculation with Bradyrhizobium ottawaense Effectively Reduces N2O Emissions from Degraded Soybean Nodules in Andosols Dominated by nosZ-lacking Bradyrhizobia.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas, and its largest anthropogenic source is agricultural soils. In these soils, N2O emissions are produced from nitrogen fertilization and nitrogen-rich crop residues, such as soybean nodules. Previous studies demonstrated that inoculation with Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens possessing the N2O reductase gene (nosZ) effectively mitigated N2O emissions from soybean fields at harvest. More recently, Bradyrhizobium ottawaense, which exhibits higher nosZ expression, reduced N2O emissions more effectively than B. diazoefficiens during the degradation of soy…

Indigenous Sporosarcina pasteurii-driven carbonate mineralization couples lead immobilization with erosion control in contaminated slopes.

Lead (Pb) contamination in erosion-prone soils presents a dual environmental issue because it causes concurrent pollution and soil degradation. We developed a sustainable bioremediation technique utilizing microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) with the indigenous Pb-tolerant ureolytic bacterium Sporosarcina pasteurii, isolated from the biological soil crusts of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The strain exhibited considerable urease activity and consistent growth under extreme lead stress (2000 mg/L) and effectively facilitated carbonate mineralization. The MICP treatment resul…

Elucidating the Role of Bacterial and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Inoculants in Mitigating Nitrous Oxide (N2O) Emissions in Agroecosystems Under Climate Change.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas that has a global warming potential approximately 300 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2). It is largely produced in agricultural soils through nitrification and denitrification processes driven by specific microbial functional genes (e.g., amoA, nirS, and nirK), which represent the main source of its emissions. The intensive use of nitrogen fertilizers increases nitrogen surplus in the ecosystem. This in turn accelerates the risk of nitrogen loss through leaching and volatilization, while also accelerating microbial pathways that drive N2O emissions in t…

Integrated Organic-Inorganic Fertilization Enhances Microbial Stoichiometric Homeostasis but Triggers Seasonal Metabolic Trade-Offs in an Alpine Sandy Ecosystem.

The ecological restoration of degraded sandy land in the Yarlung Zangbo River Valley is constrained by the metabolic functions of soil microorganisms. This study investigates the dynamic mechanisms of microbial elemental use efficiency in walnut plantations, with a focus on seasonal variations in soil chemical stoichiometry, extracellular enzyme activity, and microbial nutrient efficiency in rhizosphere and bulk soils. This paper explores the effects of conventional organic fertilizer (CF) and organic-inorganic compound fertilizer (OIF) on microbial nutrient use strategies and their seasonal d…

Tracking antibiotic resistance through the environment near a biosolid spreading ground: Resistome changes, distribution, and metal(loid) co-selection.

The application of urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) products to agricultural lands has contributed to the rising level of antibiotic resistance and drawn a critical public health concern. It has not been thoroughly investigated at which spatial scales a biosolid applied area as a potentially predominant source affects surrounding soil resistomes. This study investigated distribution and impact of WWTP biosolids treated with anaerobic digestion on an agricultural area. Heterotrophic plate counts (HPCs) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) were performed for detection of se…

Rhizosphere Microbiome Dynamics Associated with Root Rot in Polygonatum kingianum Coll.

Polygonatum kingianum Coll. (PKC) is a valuable medicinal herb native to Yunnan, China, but its yield and quality are severely threatened by root rot. To elucidate the rhizosphere microbial dynamics associated with this disease and to identify location-transcending patterns, we collected rhizosphere soils from healthy and diseased PKC plants at three planting bases in Lincang, Qujing, and Kunming. Soil properties were measured, and bacterial (16S rRNA) and fungal (ITS) communities were characterized by amplicon sequencing. Geographic origin emerged as the dominant factor associated with microb…

Variation in the Chemical Sensitivity of Earthworms from Field Populations to Imidacloprid and Copper.

The chemical risk of pesticides for nontarget soil macroorganisms has mainly been assessed using the compost earthworm Eisenia fetida. However, E. fetida does not occur in agroecosystems, and it is generally less sensitive than other earthworm species. Thus, the extrapolation of its response to pesticides to other earthworm species may lead to uncertainties in risk assessment. Because toxicity data for other earthworms are scarce, we assessed the chemical sensitivity of five species (Allolobophora chlorotica, Aporrectodea caliginosa, Aporrectodea longa, Aporrectodea rosea, and Lumbricus rubell…

Nutrients Limiting Soybean (glycine max l) Growth in Acrisols and Ferralsols of Western Kenya.

Low soybean yields in western Kenya have been attributed to low soil fertility despite much work done on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) nutrition leading to suspicion of other nutrient limitations. To investigate this, a nutrient omission trial was set up in the greenhouse at the University of Eldoret-Kenya to diagnose the nutrients limiting soybean production in Acrisols from Masaba central and Butere sub-Counties, and Ferralsols from Kakamega (Shikhulu and Khwisero sub-locations) and Butula sub-Counties and to assess the effect of liming on soil pH and soybean growth. Relationship between photosynthetic phosphorus-use efficiency and foliar phosphorus fractions in tropical tree species.

How plants develop adaptive strategies to efficiently use nutrients on infertile soils is an important topic in plant ecology. It has been suggested that, with decreasing phosphorus (P) availability, plants increase photosynthetic P-use efficiency (PPUE) (i.e., the ratio of instantaneous photosynthetic carbon assimilation rate per unit foliar P). However, the mechanism to increase PPUE remains unclear. In this study, we tested whether high PPUE is explained by an optimized allocation of P in cells among P-containing biochemical compounds (i.e., foliar P fractions). We investigated the relation…
