A simple, selective, sensitive and precise high-performance liquid chromatographic plasma assay for the antihypertensive drugs, irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide is described. It has been suggested that salicylate hydroxylation can be used to detect hydroxyl radical formation in vivo. In the present study we investigated the effects of verapamil and or ryanodine on salicylate (SA) and its hydroxylated adduct; 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA) levels in glutamate induced neurotoxicity of whole rat brains. BACKGROUND: Mercury poisoning presents a variety of clinical pictures depending on chemical structure, amount absorbed, total mercury burden, and individual factors. Distant skin lesions, after subcutaneous injection of metallic mercury, have not been previously described.
CASE REPORT: We present a homicidal, subcutaneous injection of mercury resulting in widespread skin lesions, remote from the radiologically visible mercury. The lesions appeared at 40 days and began to clear at 6 months after the injection.

Quantitation of cytochrome c oxidase in complex systems such as tissue homogenates is often hampered by the presence of other hemoproteins. Cyanide can bind to reduced cytochrome c oxidase from diverse sources with a dissociation constant in the range of 0.1-0.5 mM and induces a characteristic optical change. This contrasts with the very weak binding of cyanide to reduced forms of many other hemoproteins, including hemoglobin and myoglobin. Cord blood samples (1039) collected at King Khalid University Hospital were analysed for abnormal haemoglobins using electrophoresis at alkaline and acid pH, for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency using spectrophotometric method and for G-6-PD phenotypes using electrophoresis and specific staining. Only two samples showed the presence of Hb AS and no case of sickle cell anaemia was identified. The Hb S gene frequency was 0.00096. A blackish staining found on the crowns of teeth of 51 skulls from the excavation of the medieval St. Olav's church in Trondheim was analyzed using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS).
