OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the growth and contraction of different composite skin grafts.
METHODS: The status of the following composite skin grafts was evaluated over 2 years: allogeneic sucking pig dermis and autologous epidermis (group 1, n = 19), allogeneic young pig dermis and autologous epidermis (group 2, n = 7), autologous epidermis (group 3, n = 8). The effects of gestation on the composite skin grafts were also assessed.

The occurrence and extension of avian mycobacteriosis in house-sparrows (P. domesticus) and mountain-sparrows (P. montanus) have been followed under different epidemiological conditions. Postnatal development of the teeth of German Landrace and Göttingen Miniature pigs was studied by measuring the areas of each tooth visible on lateral radiographs of the mandibles. It was concluded that the appearance of the teeth at each stage, and the relation of their growth to that of the rest of the masticatory apparatus, relates mainly to postnatal changes in the relative location of the jaw pivot.

The role of iron was evaluated in pigs that died suddenly of microangiopathy (mulberry heart disease) characterized by myocardial and endothelial cell damage and capillary microthrombosis. The ultrastructure of capillary vessels and the perivascular space (PVS) of the pineal gland were investigated in the domestic pig, miniature pig, and wild boar. It has been ascertained that the capillaries of these animals have continuous thick walls without pores and fenestrations. In fetal period, capillaries with spacious lumina, bordered by 3 to 4 endothelial cells predominate. The PVS, as a rule wide open, contain nerve endings, pinealocyte process endings, and collagenous fibers which increase with age.

Sows infested with Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis (ssvs) were treated with 75, 150 and 300 micrograms/kg of ivermectin by a single subcutaneous injection at the neck region. Compared to the numbers of mites and eggs just before injection, those on post treatment weeks (PTW) 1, 2 and 4 showed significant decreases. Especially at 300 micrograms/kg, the counts showed almost all mites and eggs were eradicated on PTW 1, manifesting ivermectin to possess potential effect on ssve without apparent abnormal side effect. Potential mitocide effect of ivermectin on ssvs was revealed.

From 1980 to 1985, 3550 pigs, 530 cattle, 370 buffalo, 1850 sheep and 2100 goat of different breeds, age and sex from different parts of Uttar Pradesh State (India) were screened for the presence of cysticerci. Increased mortality occurred among sows in a pig-breeding unit during a few months. It was concluded that gastric torsion was one of the causes of death. This disease is becoming increasingly important in large intensive units, also in the Netherlands. Little is so far known of the origin of this syndrome. The feeding system and the quality of the food (fine-grained feed, contamination by toxic agents) could be a factor in the pathogenesis. Closer investigation of this economic problem would appear to be advisable.

Leptospira interrogans serovar bratislava was recovered from 2 of 10 sows examined from an Iowa slaughterhouse. Isolations were made from the kidney and genital tract of each sow. Serovar bratislava is not included in vaccines because it has not been previously isolated in the United States.
