Adrenergic and VIP-ergic relaxatory mechanisms of the feline extrahepatic biliary tree.

Relaxatory mechanisms of the extrahepatic biliary tree were investigated in anesthetized cats allowing separate recordings of the sphincter of Oddi, gallbladder and duodenal wall. Regional intra-arterial administration of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) elicited dose-dependent relaxatory motor responses, which were not influenced by blockade of cholino- or beta-adrenoceptors, but were most probably due to activation of VIP receptors at the smooth muscle membrane. Efferent electrical vagal nerve stimulation unmasked relaxatory motor responses after previous blockade of muscarinic cholinocep

Peripheral sympatho-inhibitory cardiovascular effects of opioid peptides in anaesthetized rabbits.

1. Opioid agonists influence isolated cardiovascular tissues from rabbits, as well as the cardiovascular system of pithed rabbits, through presynaptic receptors on postganglionic sympathetic nerve fibres. The present experiments were carried out in order to study effects which result from activation of these receptors in anaesthetized rabbits. 2. In pithed rabbits with electrically stimulated sympathetic outflow, infusion of [D-Ala2-D-Leu5]-enkephalin (DADLE) 10 micrograms kg-1 min-1 and dynorphin-(1-13) (dynorphin) 1 microgram kg-1 min-1 decreased the plasma noradrenaline concentration, mean

Well-maintained reflex responses of sympathetic nerve activity to stimulation of baroreceptor, chemoreceptor and cutaneous mechanoreceptors in neonatal capsaicin-treated rats.

Neonatal treatment with capsaicin (CAP) reduced the content of substance P-like immunoreactivity in the area of the nucleus tractus solitarii and the dorsal horn of the spinal cord in rats. The resting values of the mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate of CAP-treated rats were not significantly different from those of control rats. Reflex responses of the renal sympathetic nerve activity to stimulation of baroreceptor, chemoreceptor and cutaneous mechanoreceptor were compared in CAP- and vehicle-treated rats. Under these conditions the reflex responses were quite well maintained in CAP-

Abnormal regulation of noradrenergic function in panic disorders. Effects of clonidine in healthy subjects and patients with agoraphobia and panic disorder.

Clonidine hydrochloride, an alpha 2-adrenergic receptor agonist that decreases noradrenergic function, was administered to 21 healthy subjects and 26 drug-free patients with agoraphobia and panic attacks. Clonidine produced significantly greater decreases in plasma MHPG levels and sitting and standing diastolic blood pressure and significantly smaller increases in growth hormone levels and self-rated drowsiness in the patients. These findings indicate that the regulation of noradrenergic activity is aberrant in some patients with panic disorder, since a previous study demonstrated that patient

[Effects of bromazepam on responses of mucosal blood flow of the gastrointestinal tract and the gastric motility to stimulation of the amygdala and hypothalamus in conscious cats].

Electrical stimulation (ES) of the nucleus amygdaloideus centralis ( NAmC ) and basolateralis ( NAmBL ), like norepinephrine, decreased mucosal blood flow of the gastric antrum and duodenum and decreased antral motility amplitude in gallamine-immobilized cats. ES of the nucleus lateralis hypothalami (NHL) less extensively produced a similar action. The NAmC stimulation elevated BP and renal sympathetic discharges, whereas the NAmBL stimulation lowered BP. These findings indicate that the gastric and pressor responses to the NAmC stimulation may be attributed to an increase in cerebral sympathe

[Peripheral nerve injuries complicating extracranial vascular surgery (author's transl)].

Peripheral nerve injuries may complicate extracranial vascular surgery. Pareses of the recurrent and hypoglossal nerves are clinically important. The nervus laryngeus superior, the ramus marginalis mandibulae of the facial nerve and the brachial plexus may be involved. Horner's syndrom indicating damage of sympathetic fibers may also appear. Lesions of the glossopharyngeal, vagus and phrenic nerves are rather seldom.

Biogenic amines in carotid body of adult and infant rats--a gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric assay.

A gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric method was used for the determination of biogenic amines in carotid body of adult and 10 days old rats. The method is ideally suited for this measurement since only small amounts of tissue were available (dry weight carotid body: adult 8.3 mug; infant 5.6 mug). In adult carotid body large amounts of dopamine (1 950 pmol/mg protein) and norepinephrine (1 140 pmol/mg protein) were found together with a comparatively small concentration of serotonin (505 pmol/mg protein). The carotid bodies of infant rats contained 1 065 pmol dopamine/mg protein and 410 pm

[The role of chlorazepate dipotassium (Tranxilium) in the therapy of psychosomatic syndromes (author's transl)].

Divided into four groups according to different kind and cause of disorder, 240 patients showing psychosomatic disorders have been treated with chlorazepate dipotassium only or in combination with clomipramine and dihydroergotamine tartrate ambulant or in hospital, depending on the degree of severity of the disorder. With 101 clinically treated cases of cyclothymic depression good results were obtained with combined treatment with chlorazepate dipotassium while reducing the dose of the antidepressant. The same result was obtained with 63 patients suffering from severe neurasthenic exhaustion a

Inhibition of in vivo insulin secretion by prostaglandin E1.

To determine the effect of prostaglandin E(1) (PGE(1)) infusion upon in vivo insulin secretion, serum insulin responses after an intravenous glucose pulse (2 g) were measured before and during an intravenous infusion of PGE(1) (10 mug/min) in 11 anesthetized dogs. Circulating insulin decreased significantly during PGE(1) infusion were significantly less than control responses. Three dogs received PGE(1) infusions into the thoracic aorta to preclude pulmonic and hepatic degradation of PGE(1) before its arrival at the pancreatic artery; inhibition of insulin secretion was again seen. Inhibition

Degeneration of sympathetic nerves in vitro and development of smooth muscle supersensitivity to noradrenaline.

1. The sequence of events involved in degeneration of sympathetic nerve terminals has been studied in vitro in the expansor secundariorum muscle of the chicken.2. The muscle underwent a degeneration contraction due to abrupt release of noradrenaline stores from the nerves about 18 hr after isolation. The tension reached its peak within 6 hr at about 44% of the maximum tension developed to added noradrenaline.3. Responses to nerve stimulation were transiently potentiated by 35% on average just before the onset of the degeneration contraction and then failed abruptly.4. Degeneration release of n
