Prenatal Caffeine Exposure Is Linked to Elevated Sugar Intake and BMI, Altered Reward Sensitivity, and Aberrant Insular Thickness in Adolescents: An ABCD Investigation.

Prenatal caffeine exposure (PCE) has been positively associated with elevated body mass index (BMI) in children. Why this association occurs is unclear, but it is possible that PCE alters the in utero development of brain structures associated with food preference, leading to more total sugar intake (TSI, grams) later in childhood. To test this hypothesis, we investigated if PCE (daily/weekly/<weekly vs. no exposure) and elevated BMI are associated with increased TSI, neural activation during large reward anticipation (monetary incentive delay task—functional MRI) and structural changes (thick

Conservative treatment with mouthwashes followed by tongue photo biomodulation therapy in Covid-19: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Oral manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), including ulcers, herpetiform lesions, macules, and petechiae, among others, are becoming increasingly recognized, but there is little guidance on their treatment. Reported cases have described treatment with various mouthwashes containing antivirals, antifungals, antibiotics, anesthetics, or steroids. Our case report is unique in that we provide guidance on the judicious use of these medications, followed by photobiomodulation therapy if the manifestations are treatment resistant. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 30-year

Up-regulation of gasdermin C in mouse small intestine is associated with lytic cell death in enterocytes in worm-induced type 2 immunity.

"Taste-like" tuft cells in the intestine trigger type 2 immunity in response to worm infection. The secretion of interleukin-13 (IL-13) from type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) represents a key step in the tuft cell-ILC2 cell-intestinal epithelial cell circuit that drives the clearance of worms from the gut via type 2 immune responses. Hallmark features of type 2 responses include tissue remodeling, such as tuft and goblet cell expansion, and villus atrophy, yet it remains unclear if additional molecular changes in the gut epithelium facilitate the clearance of worms from the gut. Using gut or

Therapeutic implications of SARS-CoV-2 dysregulation of the gut-brain-lung axis.

The emergence and rapid spread of novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused over 180 million confirmed cases resulting in over 4 million deaths worldwide with no clear end in sight for the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic. Most SARS-CoV-2 exposed individuals experience mild to moderate symptoms, including fever, cough, fatigue, and loss of smell and taste. However, many individuals develop pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock, and multiorgan dysfunction. In addition to these primarily respiratory symptoms, SARS-CoV-2 can als

Effects of different cooking methods on volatile flavor compounds of chicken breast.

Chicken is one of the highest selling meats worldwide. Different cooking methods produce various flavor compounds in cooked chicken, which affect consumers' food choices. In this study, the volatile flavor components of Gushi chicken breast after stewing and air frying were detected using gas chromatography-ion mobility chromatography (GC-IMS) and principal component analysis (PCA), and the relative odor activity value (ROAV) was determined using PCA. A total of 43 volatile substances were identified. 3-(methylthio)propionaldehyde-M and benzene acetaldehyde can be used as characteristic flavor

Covid-19 and oral diseases: Crosstalk, synergy or association?

The coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) is a viral infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that clinically affects multiple organs of the human body. Cells in the oral cavity express viral entry receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 that allows viral replication and may cause tissue inflammation and destruction. Recent studies have reported that Covid-19 patients present oral manifestations with multiple clinical aspects. In this review, we aim to summarise main signs and symptoms of Covid-19 in the oral cavity, its possible association with oral dis

A novel multi-omics-based highly accurate prediction of symptoms, comorbid conditions, and possible long-term complications of COVID-19.

Comprehensive clinical pictures, comorbid conditions, and long-term complications of COVID-19 are still unknown. Recently, using a multi-omics-based strategy, we predicted potential drugs for COVID-19 with ∼70% accuracy. Herein, using a novel multi-omics-based bioinformatic approach and three ways of analysis, we identified the symptoms, comorbid conditions, and short-, mid-, and possible long-term complications of COVID-19 with >90% precision including 27 parent, 170 child, and 403 specific conditions. Among the specific conditions, 36 viral, 53 short-term, 62 short-mid-long-term, 194 mid-lon

Bilateral Facial Palsy and Hyperreflexia as the Main Clinical Presentation in Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

BACKGROUND Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune disease of the peripheral nervous system. It has multiple presentations, demyelinating or axonal, according to the pattern of injury. In general, there are cardinal symptoms, such as areflexia and ascending symmetrical lower limb weakness. GBS has multiple different variants. Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) is the most common type. Other known variants are acute motor and sensory axonal neuropathy, acute motor axonal neuropathy, acute sensory neuropathy, acute pan dysautonomia, and Miller Fisher syndrome.
