Desquamative gingivitis: Clinical findings and diseases.

Desquamative gingivitis is a clinical finding with several potential etiologies. Among the most common are oral lichen planus, cicatricial pemphigoid, and pemphigus vulgaris, though various other differential diagnoses exist. The presence of desquamative gingivitis often results in poor oral hygiene, which can have downstream consequences, including periodontitis and tooth loss. Though certain mucosal findings may be suggestive of a particular diagnosis, a thorough history, physical examination, and appropriate dermato- and immunopathologic assessment is necessary for narrowing this broad diff

Application of differentiated human tonsil-derived stem cells to trembler-J mice.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can differentiate into various cell types. METHODS: In this study we investigated the potential of human tonsil-derived MSCs (T-MSCs) for neuromuscular regeneration in trembler-J (Tr-J) mice, a model for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A). RESULTS: T-MSCs differentiated toward skeletal myocytes with increased expression of skeletal muscle-related markers (including troponin I type 1, and myogenin), and the formation of myotubes in vitro. In-situ transplantation of T-MSC-derived myocytes (T-MSC myocytes) into the gastrocnemius muscle in Tr-

External Cervical Resorption: A New Oral Manifestation of Systemic Sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex, chronic, and progressive autoimmune disease. SSc causes bone resorption of mandible and distal phalanges of fingers through a known mechanism, and it has also been pointed out as a possible cause of apical root resorption of teeth, because tooth resorption is regulated by similar mechanisms to those controlling bone resorption. The objective of this article was to report the first case in the literature of external cervical resorption (ECR) as an oral manifestation of SSc. A 66-year-old female patient with a 35-year history of SSc was diagnosed with multi

Comparison of long-term outcomes between pull-through resection and mandibular lip-split surgery for T4a tongue/floor of mouth cancers.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the pull-through resection is better than the mandibular lip-split for advanced tongue/floor of mouth (FOM) cancers, which remains inconclusive. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed on 91 patients with T4a tongue/FOM cancers from 2009 to 2014. Cases with mandibular resection were excluded. The pull-through resection was used when the mouth opening was ≥15 mm; otherwise the mandibular lip-split was used. RESULTS: Fifty-eight patients received pull-through resections and 33 underwent mandibular-lip splits and the mea

Clinical and Molecular Characterization of BSCL2 Mutations in a Taiwanese Cohort with Hereditary Neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: A small group of patients with inherited neuropathy that has been shown to be caused by mutations in the BSCL2 gene. However, little information is available about the role of BSCL2 mutations in inherited neuropathies in Taiwan. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Utilizing targeted sequencing, 76 patients with molecularly unassigned Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2 (CMT2) and 8 with distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN), who were selected from 348 unrelated patients with inherited neuropathies, were screened for mutations in the coding regions of BSCL2. Two heterozygous BSC

A rare association--amelogenesis imperfecta, platispondyly and bicytopenia: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Amelogenesis imperfecta is an inherited disease characterized by generalized structural abnormalities of the enamel on all teeth, including both primary and permanent dentition. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of a rare association of amelogenesis imperfecta, platyspondyly, and bicytopenia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old Moroccan boy was examined in the Centre for Dental Consultation and Treatment, Faculty of Dentistry, Rabat. He was a child of consanguineous parents (first degree). The child failed to thrive (-4 standard deviation score) and display

Membrane-shaping disorders: a common pathway in axon degeneration.

Neurons with long projections are particularly liable to damage, which is reflected by a large group of hereditary neurodegenerative disorders that primarily affect these neurons. In the group of hereditary spastic paraplegias motor axons of the central nervous system degenerate, while distal pure motor neuropathies, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disorders and the group of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies are characterized by degeneration of peripheral nerve fibres. Because the underlying pathologies share many parallels, the disorders are also referred to as axonopathies. A large number of

Leptin effects on the regenerative capacity of human periodontal cells.

Obesity is increasing throughout the globe and characterized by excess adipose tissue, which represents a complex endocrine organ. Adipose tissue secrets bioactive molecules called adipokines, which act at endocrine, paracrine, and autocrine levels. Obesity has recently been shown to be associated with periodontitis, a disease characterized by the irreversible destruction of the tooth-supporting tissues, that is, periodontium, and also with compromised periodontal healing. Although the underlying mechanisms for these associations are not clear yet, increased levels of proinflammatory adipokine

Maxillary antrolith: a rare cause of the recurrent sinusitis.

Introduction. An antrolith is a calcified mass within the maxillary sinus. The origin of the nidus of calcification may be extrinsic (foreign body in sinus) or intrinsic (stagnant mucus and fungal ball). Most antroliths are small and asymptomatic. Larger ones may present as sinusitis with symptoms like pain and discharge. Case Report. We report a case of a 47-year-old lady who presented with heaviness on the left side of the face and loosening of the left 2nd molar tooth since two months. CT scan of the osteomeatal complex and paranasal sinuses showed an opacification of bilateral maxillary si

Localized periodontal defect associated with unusual furcation involvement on a mandibular incisor.

A localized periodontal defect associated with an unusual furcation on a mandibular central incisor and its treatment sequences are presented. A 54-year-old woman presented with a persistent localized periodontal defect, which was not responsive to nonsurgical periodontal therapy. An exploratory surgery revealed complete through and through furcation involvement on the right mandibular central incisor, resulting in a three-walled infrabony defect. Following thorough mechanical debridement and root planing, the infrabony aspect of the defect was grafted with freeze-dried bone allograft combined

Statins: A new era in local drug delivery.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth, caused by a group of specific microorganisms. Aggressive forms of periodontitis can be localized or generalized. The concept that localized problem sites may be treated by local drug delivery appears attractive as the antimicrobial agent is delivered within periodontal pockets and the therapy is targeted on specific pathogenic microorganisms. Periodontitis can result in bone resorption creating bony defects, which may cause tooth loss. Various drugs have been studied using local delivery to improve the periodontal

Atrophy of the residual alveolar ridge following tooth loss in an historical population.

OBJECTIVES: To study the natural aetiopathology of jaw atrophy after tooth loss, unaltered by prosthetic procedures, an historical population without modern dental treatment was examined. METHODS: Based on the hypothesis that there are predictable changes in shape during jaw-atrophy, frequency and degree of atrophy as well as clinical aspects of bone quality and resorption were determined in the skeletal remains of 263 individuals. The potential association between age and frequency/severity of atrophy was analysed. RESULTS: Atrophy in at least one jaw segment was present in 45.2% of the ana

Bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the jaw: a review of 2,400 patient cases.

PURPOSE: Bisphosphonates (BPs) are bone-remodeling inhibitors that are used to manage bone metastases and osteoporosis. Osteonecrosis of the jaw, however, can occur during treatment. This complication is poorly understood and is called "bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the jaw" (BIOJ). METHODS: We performed a PubMed-based review of all of the described cases of BIOJ from January 2003 (the year of the first description) to September 2009. Issues of clinical relevance, such as the primary diagnosis and type of treatment, were evaluated for each patient case. RESULTS: We retrieved 2,408

Ectodermal dysplasia-cutaneous syndactyly syndrome maps to chromosome 7p21.1-p14.3.

Ectodermal dysplasia syndromes are genetically heterogeneous group of disorders involving one or more of the classical ectodermal appendages (hair, nail, teeth, sweat glands) in association with anomalies of other organs or systems. In the present study a novel form of ectodermal dysplasia syndrome, ectodermal dysplasia cutaneous syndactyly (EDCS), segregating in an autosomal recessive pattern in a Pakistani family was investigated. The clinical features of the affected individuals included large prominent ear pinnae, tooth enamel hypoplasia, hypoplastic nails, bilateral partial cutaneous synd

HOXD10 M319K mutation in a family with isolated congenital vertical talus.

Congenital vertical talus (CVT) is a primary dislocation of the talonavicular joint that often occurs in neuromusculoskeletal syndromes, but may also be seen as an isolated abnormality. Six families with isolated CVT were ascertained. DNA was isolated from 21 affected individuals and 17 unaffected individuals from these families, as well as from five sporadic patients with CVT. Variable expressivity was noted in three families, manifesting as clubfoot in three individuals. Genome-wide linkage analysis generated a maximum two-point logarithm of odds score on chromosome 2q with D2S1353 (Zmax = 1

Reproducibility of clinical attachment level and probing depth of a manual probe and a computerized electronic probe.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility of a conventional manual probe (MP) and an electronic probe, the Florida Probe (FP). Twenty patients with chronic periodontitis were assessed for pocket depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) by one examiner. Replicate measurements were taken one hour apart with each probe, on anterior teeth, at six sites per tooth. Pearson's correlation test and Student's paired t-test were used for the statistical analysis. The results showed that there were no significant differences in PD between the replicate measurements of both FP and MP

Interaction of inflammatory cells and oral microorganisms. IV. In vitro release of lysosomal constituents from polymorphonuclear leukocytes exposed to supragingival and subgingival bacterial plaque.

The deposition of bacterial plaques on tooth surfaces appears to be responsible for the initiation and progression of periodontal disease. In this study, human peripheral blood polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) actively released lysosomal constituents upon in vitro exposure to either viable or irradiated, supragingival or subgingival dental plaque. Plaques were obtained from the PMN donors (autologous plaque) or from pooled samples (homologous plaque) secured from patients with periodontal lesions. Fresh sera from PMN donors amplified the release reactions to supragingival and subgingival pl
