Our understanding of the spectrum of diseases caused by VZV continues to evolve with new and atypical presentations. Newer diagnostic studies are implicating VZV as the cause of a host of inflammatory conditions, some of which present sine herpete. Finally, the continued development of antiviral drugs and vaccines will allow safer and more effective treatment of VZV and its complications.

Sera obtained from 26 patients with Fuchs' heterochromic cyclitis were examined for the presence of autoantibodies directed against the anterior segment of the eye by means of immunofluorescence techniques. Antibodies against human iris tissue could not be detected, whereas autoantibodies against corneal epithelium were found in almost 90% of cases. This review article discusses the evolution and function of the histocompatibility system, the nature of the HLA antigens and their classification, the phenomenon of linkage disequilibrium, and the mechanisms of HLA and disease susceptibility. The reported associations between HLA antigens and various eye diseases are analysed and their significance is discussed. Problems in designing studies on HLA and disease associations are highlighted and suitable statistical procedures for the analysis of the results are outlined.

Case report of a 4-year-old girl in whom a unilateral ocular localization appeared after 1 1/2 year of maintained remission of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. It is demonstrated by means of a series of 84 lens extractions in 80 patients that cataract extraction can be meaningful and successful even with defective light projection. Indications discussed are those which are considered urgent (Cataracta hypermatura or primary and secondary glaucoma with concomitant cataract), purely functionally urgent (desire on the part of the patient to have his vision restored) and relative.

An 82-year-old white man had bilateral, chronic recurrent uveitis caused by Toxoplasma gondii. In spite of extensive therapy for toxoplasmosis, the left eye became painful and blind and was enucleated. Histopathologically, the retina disclosed unusually large numbers of necrotic cysts and a few presumably viable cysts containing crescent-shaped organisms and scanty free forms of T gondii. The analysis of 900 operated cataract cases shows that for 16 cases the secondary glaucoma has appeared 1,77 p. 100.
