Effect of ethanol on the binding of warfarin enantiomers to human serum albumin.

Ethanol is widely used as a pharmaceutical excipient for the solubilization of many hydrophobic drugs for injections. However, there are onl … ition of ethanol or 1-propanol. Unbound fractions of both the S- and R-enantiomer were decreased by 2-propanol. In various commercial albumin preparations, unbound fractions of both the S- and R-enantiomer were increased by ethanol. The different effects of ethanol among fatty acid-free HSA and commercial albumin preparations were observed.

Numerical analysis and early detection of Plasmodium falciparum using a high performance plasmonic biosensor with an external sensing approach.

The authors propose a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) using three hexagonal ring lattices. The sensor can detect biomolecules with maximum wavelength and amplitude sensitivities of 23,000 nm/RIU and 1310.93R I U -1, respectively, in the RI range of 1.32 to 1.42. It can detect infected red blood cells with Plasmodium falciparum for RIs of 1.402, 1.373, 1.395, and 1.383 in various malaria-infected red blood cell stages, including ring phase, trophozoite phase, and schizont phase. Furthermore, the sensor will be able to detect biomolecules such as vi

Liquid chromatography and differential mobility spectrometry-data-independent mass spectrometry for comprehensive multidimensional separations in metabolomics.

The benefits of combining drift time ion mobility (DTIMS) with liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) have been reported for metabolomics but the use of differential time mobility spectrometry (DMS) is less obvious due to the need for rapid scanning of the DMS cell. Drift DTIMS provides additional precursor ion selectivity and collisional cross-section information but the separation resolution between analytes remains cell- and component-dependent. With DMS, the addition of 2-propanol modifier can improve the selectivity but on cost of analyte MS response. In the presen…

Inactivation of Lactobacillus Bacteriophages by Dual Chemical Treatments.

Phage contamination is one of the significant problems in the food fermentation industry, which eventually causes economic losses to the industry. Here, we investigated the viability of Lactobacillus plantarum phage P1 and P2 using various biocides treatments (ethanol, isopropanol, sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid). Results indicated that phage P1 and P2 could be completely inactivated by treatment with 75% ethanol for 5 min, followed by 400 ppm of sodium hypochlorite treatment for 5 min. Phage P2 could be completely inactivated in the reverse sequence, while 800 ppm of sodium hypochlori

Toxicity of fungal-derived volatile organic compounds against root-knot nematodes.

BACKGROUND: Root-knot nematodes (RKNs), including Meloidogyne species, are among the most destructive plant-parasites worldwide. Recent evidence suggests that entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) can antagonize RKNs. Such antagonistic effects are likely mediated by toxic metabolites, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), produced by the fungi. However, how widespread these effects are across EPF species, and which VOCs mediate negative interactions between EPF and RKNs needs to be further elucidated. RESULTS: First, we evaluated the nematicidal effect of VOCs emitted by 46 EPF isolates against

Volatile organic compounds emitted by conventional and "green" cleaning products in the U.S. market.

Exposure to cleaning products has been associated with harm to the respiratory system, neurotoxicity, harm to the reproductive system, and elevated risk of cancer, with greatest adverse impacts for workers exposed in an occupational setting. Social and consumer interest in cleaning products that are safer for health created a market category of "green" products defined here as products advertised as healthier, non-toxic, or free from harmful chemicals as well as products with a third-party certification for safety or environmental features. In the present study we examined the air quality impa

Hot isopropanol quenching procedure for automated microtiter plate scale 13C-labeling experiments.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the generation of genetic diversity for microbial cell factories outpaces the screening of strain variants with omics-based phenotyping methods. Especially isotopic labeling experiments, which constitute techniques aimed at elucidating cellular phenotypes and supporting rational strain design by growing microorganisms on substrates enriched with heavy isotopes, suffer from comparably low throughput and the high cost of labeled substrates. RESULTS: We present a miniaturized, parallelized, and automated approach to 13C-isotopic labeling experiments by establishing and val

Acceptability of an alcohol-based handrub gel with superfatting agents among healthcare workers: a randomized crossover controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare workers often experience skin dryness and irritation from performing hand hygiene frequently. Low acceptability and tolerability of a formulation are barriers to hand hygiene compliance, though little research has been conducted on what specific types of formulation have higher acceptability than others. OBJECTIVE: To compare the acceptability and tolerability of an ethanol-based handrub gel with superfatting agents to the isopropanol-based formulations (a rub and a gel formulation) currently used by healthcare workers at the University of Geneva Hospitals, Geneva, Sw

The environmental footprint of single-use versus reusable cloths for clinical surface decontamination: a life cycle approach.

BACKGROUND: Global sustainability is a major health concern facing our planet today. The healthcare sector is a significant contributor to environmentally damaging activity. Reusable cloths should be considered as an environmentally friendly alternative to the predominantly used single-use surface wipes in cleaning and disinfection of environmental surfaces in healthcare settings. AIM: To conduct a rapid review of current policies on surface decontamination in healthcare settings; then to carry out a life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) of reusable cotton and microfibre cloths versus conventio

A New Approach to Prepare Chiral Aroma: Asymmetric Oxidation of Ionols with a Heme Acquisition System A Derived from Symbiotic Fluorescent Bacteria.

The aim of this study was to propose an alternative route for preparing chiral β- and α-ionols by asymmetric oxidation with a heme acquisition system A (HasA) derived from symbiotic fluorescent bacteria as a biocatalyst. The HasA (6 g) in distilled water (300 mL) was stirred at 1150 rpm for 1 day at 40°C. Subsequently, a secondary alcohol (0.77 mmol) as a substrate in 2% 2-propanol was added to the catalyst solution. After verifying that the oxidation proceeded to ca 50% using gas chromatography (GC), the reaction mixture was filtered, extracted, washed, and dried over. The extract was concent…

UV-Light-Tunable p-/n-Type Chemiresistive Gas Sensors Based on Quasi-1D TiS3 Nanoribbons: Detection of Isopropanol at ppm Concentrations.

The growing demand of society for gas sensors for energy-efficient environmental sensing stimulates studies of new electronic materials. Here, we investigated quasi-one-dimensional titanium trisulfide (TiS3) crystals for possible applications in chemiresistors and on-chip multisensor arrays. TiS3 nanoribbons were placed as a mat over a multielectrode chip to form an array of chemiresistive gas sensors. These sensors were exposed to isopropanol as a model analyte, which was mixed with air at low concentrations of 1-100 ppm that are below the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

Gaseous isopropanol removal in a microbial fuel cell with deoxidizing anode: Performance, anode characteristics and microbial community.

A deoxidizing packing material (DPM) with an encapsulated deoxidizing agent (DA) was developed to construct the packed anodes of a trickle-bed microbial fuel cell (TB-MFC) for treating waste gas. The encapsulated DA can consume O2 in waste gas and increase the voltage output and power density (PD) of the constructed TB-MFC. The DPM effectively enables the circulating water in TB-MFC for maintaining a low level of dissolved oxygen for 80 h. The results revealed that when the concentration of isopropanol (IPA) in waste gas was 0.74 g/m3, the TB-MFC (DPM with DA) exhibited an IPA removal efficien

Selective Detection of Volatile Organics in a Mixture Using a Photoionization Detector and Thermal Desorption from a Nanoporous Preconcentrator.

The selective detection of individual hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within a mixture is of great importance in industrial contexts due to environmental and health concerns. Achieving this with inexpensive, portable detectors continues to be a significant challenge. Here, a novel thermal separator system coupled with a photoionization detector has been developed, and its ability to selectively detect the VOCs isopropanol and 1-octene from a mixture of the two has been studied. The system includes a nanoporous silica preconcentrator in conjunction with a commercially available phot

Terra Firma-Forme Dermatosis: Rubbing with Alcohol Establishes the Diagnosis.

An 80-year-old man with a past medical history of basal cell carcinomas presented with an asymptomatic eruption on the chest during his biannual skin check for cancer. He had had no prior or current episodes of seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp, face, or chest. He showered and cleaned that area daily. Physical examination revealed multiple brown plaques on the upper central region of the chest (Figure 1A and B). A SMART (skin modified by alcohol rubbing test) evaluation was performed.1 A 70% isopropyl alcohol pad was used to firmly rub the area. The brown plaques and discoloration remained on

Ultra-Sensitive Isopropanol Biochemical Gas Sensor (Bio-Sniffer) for Monitoring of Human Volatiles.

Our groups have previously developed a biochemical gas sensor to measure isopropanol (IPA) in exhaled air and have applied it for breath IPA investigation in healthy subjects and diabetes patients. In this study, the original bio-sniffer was modified with a series of components that improved the limit of detection (LOD). First, the modified IPA bio-sniffer used a C8855-type photomultiplier tube (PMT) that performed well in the photon sensitivity at the peak wavelength of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) fluorescence. Second, the multi-core bifurcated optical fiber, which incorporated 3

Peak sharpening limits of solvent-assisted post-column refocusing to enhance detection limits in liquid chromatography.

We report on a numerical and experimental study of the limits of peak refocusing and concentration enhancement that can be obtained with solvent front-assisted peak remobilization in a trap column receiving peaks eluting from a preceding analytical column. It is shown that the upper limit of peak refocusing can best be pursued by injecting a sufficiently large volume in a sufficiently narrow capillary and elute it with a sufficiently steep (ballistic) gradient. Corresponding equations offering a quantitative description have been derived and verified experimentally. For the latter purpose, pea

Evaluation of organosolv pretreatment on the structural characteristics of lignin polymers and follow-up enzymatic hydrolysis of the substrates from Eucalyptus wood.

In the present study, Eucalyptus was subjected to organosolv pretreatment processes with aqueous 2-propanol at 200-220°C to obtain lignin with benign characters for its valorization and digestible substrates for bioethanol production. Results showed that different delignification ratios (64.00%-81.26%) and molecular weights (Mw=610-2680g/mol) of lignin fractions were dissociated from various pretreatment conditions, and the glucose yields of all the pretreated substrates significantly increased to 54.65-88.59% as compared to that of raw material (9.20%). Additionally, the amounts of β-O-4, β-β…
