Xenophobia, ethnic community, and immigrant youths' friendship network formation.

Immigrant youth often rebuild their friendships and other social networks after arriving in a new country. The difficulties involved can threaten their psychosocial development. Formation of social networks needs to be understood within the macro sociocultural context that shapes the experience. Nonetheless, the current literature on social network formation rarely captures that context. Knowledge about immigrant youths' social network, for example, is often embedded in assimilation, ethnic identity, and adaptation literature. This paper examines how the sociocultural context enables immigrant

Exorcism-resistant ghost possession treated with clopenthixol.

BACKGROUND: An Indian man now in Britain explained his criminal behaviour as episodic ghost possession. Traditional exorcisms failed to help. METHOD: A 'Western' diagnosis of dissociative state or paranoid schizophrenia was made. Treatment commenced using trifluoperazine and clopenthixol. RESULTS: The patient underwent remission during neuroleptic treatment, despite previous evidence of genuine possession. CONCLUSIONS: Many cultures give rise to apparently genuine cases of ghost possession. Neuroleptics may relieve symptoms of exorcism-resistant possession.

Process for developing a culturally informed brief motivational intervention.

The present study culturally enhances a standard brief intervention for alcohol use. Through an iterative process engaging key stakeholders; including patients, and expert consultants, this research sought to enhance current evidence based interventions. Five culturally informed enhancements consistent with Motivational Interviewing were introduced into standard brief interventions. These culturally informed enhancements can be refined to address the cultural risk and protective factors of other priority populations. The distinctions and advantages of this approach over prior cultural adapted

Revisiting the immigrant paradox in reproductive health: the roles of duration of residence and ethnicity.

The immigrant paradox refers to the contrasting observations that immigrants usually experience similar or better health outcomes than the native-born population despite socioeconomic disadvantage and barriers to health care use. This paradox, however, has not been examined simultaneously in relation to varying degrees of exposure to the receiving society and across multiple outcomes and risk factors. To advance knowledge on these issues, we analysed data of the Maternity Experiences Survey, a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of 6421 Canadian women who delivered singleton infan
