Mastoidectomy dimensions for direct acoustic cochlear implantation: a human cadaveric temporal bone study.

The objective of the present paper was to acquire information about the mastoidectomy size necessary to obtain an optimal placement of the direct acoustic cochlear implant actuator and fixation system. Ten human cadaveric temporal bones were dissected and implanted with direct acoustic cochlear implant. Mastoidectomy size was determined after implantation in each temporal bone. A bone bed for the receiver/stimulator, mastoidectomy and a large posterior tympanotomy were drilled out. The mastoidectomy was progressively enlarged posteriorly in small steps until the actuator template was judged ad

Measurement of the vibration of the middle ear ossicles with removed eardrum: a method for quantification of ossicular fixation.

Chronic inflammation of the middle ear is a common disease in which the mobility of the middle ear ossicles may be reduced; resulting in hea … hnique in which the ossicles are vibrated magnetically. After measuring the response of the umbo to acoustic stimulation, we removed the eardrum and attached a small magnet to the manubrium. An electromagnetic excitation coil was then used to vibrate the magnet, and the signal to the coil was adjusted until the vibration of the ossicles matches that achieved acoustica …

Evaluation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex using sinusoidal off-vertical axis rotation in patients with acoustic neurinoma.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) was studied to examine the utility of off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) in the diagnosis of acoustic neurinoma. Subjects were sinusoidally rotated with eyes open in complete darkness at frequencies of 0.4 and 0.8 Hz with a maximum angular velocity of 60 degrees /s at either earth-vertical axis rotation (EVAR) or OVAR. Thirteen patients with acoustic neurinomas were investigated. Results showed that VOR gain during OVAR at 0.8 Hz and in a 30 degrees nose-up position in patients with internal auditory canal tumors was significantly less than the gain measured du

Cutaneous Alternating Current Stimulation Can Cause a Phasic Modulation of Speech Perception.

Segregating important stimuli from distractors is crucial for successful speech perception. Neural activity synchronized to speech, also termed "neural speech tracking," is thought to be instrumental for this purpose. However, whether neural tracking of targets and distractors both play a similarly important role for speech perception in a setting with multiple competing speakers is rarely examined. In 61 human participants (30 males, 31 females), we used transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to presumably manipulate neural tracking of two simultaneously presented sequences of rh

Different modality-specific mechanisms mediate serial dependence effects in visual and auditory perception.

BACKGROUND: Perceptual history plays an important role in sensory processing and decision making, shaping how we perceive and judge external objects and events. Indeed, past stimuli can bias what we are currently seeing in an attractive fashion, making a current stimulus appear more similar to a preceding one than it actually is. Such attractive "serial dependence" effects concern virtually every aspect of perception, suggesting that they may reflect a fundamental principle of brain processing. However, it is unclear whether the ubiquitous nature of serial dependence is due to an underlying ce

Mouse frontal cortex mediates additive multisensory decisions.

The brain can combine auditory and visual information to localize objects. However, the cortical substrates underlying audiovisual integration remain uncertain. Here, we show that mouse frontal cortex combines auditory and visual evidence; that this combination is additive, mirroring behavior; and that it evolves with learning. We trained mice in an audiovisual localization task. Inactivating frontal cortex impaired responses to either sensory modality, while inactivating visual or parietal cortex affected only visual stimuli. Recordings from >14,000 neurons indicated that after task learning,

Audiovisual multisensory integration in individuals with reading and language impairments: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Differences in sensory function have been documented for a number of neurodevelopmental conditions, including reading and language impairments. Prior studies have measured audiovisual multisensory integration (i.e., the ability to combine inputs from the auditory and visual modalities) in these populations. The present study sought to systematically review and quantitatively synthesize the extant literature on audiovisual multisensory integration in individuals with reading and language impairments. A comprehensive search strategy yielded 56 reports, of which 38 were used to extract 109 group

A technological framework for running and analyzing animal head turning experiments.

Head turning experiments are widely used to test the cognition of both human infants and non-human animal species. Monitoring head turns allows researchers to non-invasively assess attention to acoustic or visual stimuli. In the majority of head turning experiments, the head direction analyses have been accomplished manually, which is extremely labor intensive and can be affected by subjectivity or other human errors and limitations. In the current study, we introduce an open-source computer program for measuring head directions of freely moving animals including common marmoset monkeys (Calli

Functional modelling of interaural time difference discrimination in acoustical and electrical hearing.

OBJECTIVE: Interaural time differences (ITDs) are important for sound source localisation. We present a model to predict the just noticeable differences (JNDs) in ITD discrimination for normal hearing and electric stimulation through a cochlear implant. APPROACH: We combined periphery models of acoustic and electric stimulation with a novel JND in the ITD estimation stage, which consists of a shuffled cross correlogram and a binary classifier characterisation method. Furthermore, an evaluation framework is presented based on a large behavioural dataset. MAIN RESULTS: The model correctly pred

Wingbeat Frequency-Sweep and Visual Stimuli for Trapping Male Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Combinations of female wingbeat acoustic cues and visual cues were evaluated to determine their potential for use in male Aedes aegypti (L.) traps in peridomestic environments. A modified Centers for Disease control (CDC) light trap using a 350-500 Hz frequency-sweep broadcast from a speaker as an acoustic stimulus, combined with a black poster-board half-cylinder behind the trap as a visual stimulus, captured a significantly greater proportion of males in a laboratory arena during daylight than a CDC trap with the visual stimulus alone or a CDC trap alone without stimuli. Traps of each treatm

Multisensory integration and attention in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia affects 5%-10% of the population, resulting in poor spelling and reading skills. While there are well-documented differences in the way dyslexics process low-level visual and auditory stimuli, it is mostly unknown whether there are similar differences in audiovisual multisensory processes. Here, we investigated audiovisual integration using the redundant target effect (RTE) paradigm. Some conditions demonstrating audiovisual integration appear to depend upon magnocellular pathways, and dyslexia has been associated with deficits in this pathway; so, we postulated that dev

The effect of static and dynamic visual gestures on stuttering inhibition.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of steady-state and dynamic visual gestures of vowels in stuttering inhibition. Eight adults who stuttered recited sentences from memory while watching video presentations of the following visual speech gestures: (a) a steady-state /u/, (b) dynamic production of /a-i-u/, (c) steady-state /u/ with an accompanying audible 1 kHz pure tone, and (d) dynamic production of /a-i-u/ with an accompanying audible 1 kHz pure tone. A 1 kHz pure tone and a no-external signal condition served as control conditions. Results revealed a significant main effect of au

Computer-based learning of spelling skills in children with and without dyslexia.

Our spelling training software recodes words into multisensory representations comprising visual and auditory codes. These codes represent information about letters and syllables of a word. An enhanced version, developed for this study, contains an additional phonological code and an improved word selection controller relying on a phoneme-based student model. We investigated the spelling behavior of children by means of learning curves based on log-file data of the previous and the enhanced software version. First, we compared the learning progress of children with dyslexia working either with

When written words become moving pictures: complex visual hallucinations on stimulation of the lateral occipital lobe.

Electrical stimulation of the human epileptic brain is used mainly for identification of eloquent cortical regions such as motor and speech areas. Other stimulation responses include the patient's epileptic auras and seizures. In addition, experiential phenomena may be elicited. Here we describe the reproducible initiation of a structured complex visual hallucination on stimulation of the left lateral occipital cortex (superior part of Brodmann area 19, close to the angular gyrus of the parietal lobe). Our findings illustrate that stimulation of the left temporo-parieto-occipital junction may

Feasibility of using silicon-substrate recording electrodes within the auditory nerve.

The use of penetrating, silicon-substrate (i.e., "thin-film") probes within a cross-section of a sensory nerve offers the possibility of assessing the pattern and extent of fiber excitation within the nerve. We used acute cat preparations to assess the feasibility of this technique for recordings within the auditory nerve trunk. Four probe configurations fabricated by the University of Michigan Center for Neural Communication Technology were evaluated using acoustic and electric stimuli. Our main concerns were the nature of the recorded potentials and the degree of spatial selectivity provided

Potentiation of acoustic-trauma-induced audiogenic seizure susceptibility by salicylates in mice.

Combined exposure to noise and salicylates was found to produce greater acoustic trauma induced audiogenic seizure risk than exposure to the noise alone. The result suggests that salicylates could make the mouse cochlea more vulnerable to the traumatic action of noise.

[Experience with electrostimulation of the acoustic nerve before cochlea implantation].

The electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve plays an essential role in the selection of patients for cochlea implantation. The performance of a deaf ear under the conditions of electrical stimulation can be assessed by means of the pre-operative promontory test using a transtympanic needle electrode. Five components of this test were applied to 48 patients: the determination of perception threshold and upper comfortable level for pulse and burst stimulation, the pitch test, the temporal difference test and the gap detection test. The mean values emerging from these examinations may be use

[Intrapartum therapy-resistant fetal bradycardia--color Doppler sonographic diagnosis of umbilical cord compression due to fetal grasping].

Fetal heart rate pathology is seen in up to 40% of complications of the umbilical cord. We report a case in which long lasting bradycardia was associated with fetal grasping of the umbilical cord. Using colour doppler, the reason for the bradycardia could be detected. After vibro-acoustic stimulation the fetus released the grasp of the umbilical cord, following by a normalisation of the fetal heart rate and a spontaneous delivery two hours later. This case report underlines the importance of colour doppler for the diagnosis of fetal heart rate pathology.
