The Maternal Brain in Context: Systemic Physiological Changes Across Pregnancy.

During pregnancy, the maternal body undergoes profound, coordinated physiological adaptations to support the developing fetus, including major shifts in immune regulation and dramatic changes in the vascular system. Accompanying these peripheral adaptations, recent longitudinal studies in humans point to significant remodeling of the nervous system, occurring in lockstep with increases in gonadal hormone production. To understand the neural adaptations tied to pregnancy and the postpartum period, a holistic approach is essential-one that accounts for changes across multiple peripheral systems.

Emerging role of the adaptive immunity in aortic aneurysm and dissection.

Aortic aneurysm and dissection (AAD) is a critical aortic disease with high mortality. AAD is characterized by aortic inflammation, which manifests as the infiltration of immune cells and the accumulation of inflammatory mediators. Studies have predominantly focused on the innate immune response, while the role of adaptive immunity in AAD remains poorly characterized. Given the substantial knowledge gaps, this review systematically outlines the development of the adaptive immune response in AAD - from antigen initiation and lymphocyte activation to its ultimate effects on the aortic wall. Addi

Exercise and Sports Metabolomics: Analytical Platforms, Metabolite Annotation, Pathway-Level Interpretation, and Biomarker-Panel Readiness.

Exercise and sports metabolomics provide a systems-level approach to characterizing how acute exercise, training adaptation, nutrition, recovery, and environmental stress reshape human metabolism. By profiling metabolites related to substrate utilization, mitochondrial function, redox balance, inflammation, muscle stress, and recovery kinetics, these approaches can reveal pathway-level responses that conventional single biomarkers cannot capture. However, many exercise-responsive features remain difficult to interpret because of incomplete chemical identification, uncertain annotation confiden

Effects of Red Onion Peel Extracts on Oxidative Stress in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Polyphenols are natural compounds with antioxidant properties that help prevent chronic diseases. Red onion (Allium cepa) peels are an underutilized source of polyphenols, offering a sustainable opportunity for the valorization of agricultural by-products. Polyphenol-rich extracts were obtained from red onion peels using subcritical water extraction and adsorption resin chromatography. Their biological effects were evaluated in Caenorhabditis elegans under oxidative stress conditions. A multi-omics approach integrating transcriptomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics was applied to assess molecul

Transcriptomic plasticity in hybrid schistosomes can contribute to their zoonotic potential.

Hybrids between Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma bovis contribute to human and animal infections, highlighting complex interspecies interactions that facilitate schistosomiasis transmission. Schistosoma bovis infects multiple ruminant hosts, promoting cross-species transmission and increasing zoonotic risk. This study explores transcriptomic plasticity as a mechanism enabling hybrid schistosomes to adapt to different definitive hosts. We analysed two contexts: (1) introgressed S. haematobium × S. bovis hybrids, which exhibited higher virulence in sheep than parental S. bovis; and (2) S.

The pars tuberalis: The site of the circannual clock in mammals?

Accurate timing and physiological adaptation to anticipate seasonal changes are an essential requirement for an organism's survival. In contrast to all other environmental cues, photoperiod offers a highly predictive signal that can be reliably used to activate a seasonal adaptive programme at the correct time of year. Coupled to photoperiod sensing, it is apparent that many organisms have evolved innate long-term timekeeping systems, allowing reliable anticipation of forthcoming environmental changes. The fundamental biological processes giving rise to innate long-term timing, with which the

Phospholipid analogs and beyond: pleiotropic roles of betaine lipids in phycology, ecology, and biomedicine.

Betaine lipids (BLs) are a class of non-phosphorus glycerolipids widely found in microalgae, fungi, bacteria, mosses, and ferns. For decades, the central paradigm regarding the biological function of BLs has been their role in substituting for phospholipids under phosphate starvation-a crucial adaptive mechanism for survival in oligotrophic environments. However, accumulating evidence indicates that the functional diversity of BLs is far more extensive. Recent studies have demonstrated their distinct roles in fatty acid metabolism, adaptation to various environmental stresses, and ecological i

Decoding the CRH system from clinical failures to therapeutic translation.

The corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) system orchestrates stress adaptation, integrating neuroendocrine, autonomic, immune, and behavioural responses to internal and external challenges. For over 2 decades, CRH receptor type 1 (CRH-R1) has been pursued as a therapeutic target for neuropsychiatric disorders. Despite compelling biological rationale and extensive preclinical validation, most CRH-R1 antagonist programmes have failed in depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and alcohol use disorder. In contrast, CRH-R1 antagonism has demonstrated clinical proof-of-concept in cong

Understanding bacterial ecology to combat antibiotic resistance dissemination.

The dissemination of antibiotic resistance from environmental sources is a growing concern. Despite the widespread occurrence of antibiotic resistance transmission events, there are actually multiple obstacles in the ecosystem that restrict the flow of bacteria and genes, in particular nonnegligible biological barriers. How these ecological factors help combat the dissemination of antibiotic resistance and relevant antibiotic resistance-diminishing organisms (ARDOs) deserves further exploration. This review summarizes the factors that influence the growth, metabolism, and environmental adaptat

Multiomics of Aging and Aging-Related Diseases.

Despite their astonishing biological diversity, surprisingly few shared traits connect all or nearly all living organisms. Aging, i.e., the progressive and irreversible decline in the function of multiple cells and tissues, is one of these fundamental features of all organisms, ranging from single-cell creatures to complex animals, alongside variability, adaptation, growth, healing, reproducibility, mobility, and, finally, death. Age is a key determinant for many pathologies, shaping the risks of incidence, severity, and treatment outcomes for cancer, neurodegeneration, heart failure, sarcopen

Cognitive development following early brain injury: evidence for neural adaptation.

Over the past few decades a large body of work from developmental neurobiology has shown that mammalian brain development is the product of dynamic and adaptive processes operating within highly constrained, but continually changing, biological and environmental contexts. The recent study of children with prenatal focal brain injury supports this dynamic view of development for humans. Children's injuries often affect substantial portions of one cerebral hemisphere, resulting in damage that would compromise cognitive ability in adults. However, longitudinal behavioral studies of this populatio

How treatments for pathological gambling can be informed by treatments for substance use disorders.

Substance use disorders and pathological gambling share similarities in terms of diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, and clinical course. However, relatively few studies have evaluated the efficacy of treatments for gambling disorders. As interest in pathological gambling grows, adaptation of effective treatments from the field of substance abuse may advance the study of treatment for pathological gambling. This article reviews the similarities and differences between pathological gambling and substance use disorders. It describes psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatments for substance u

Ideal homes? Housing effects on rodent brain and behaviour.

Rodents used in biomedical research are typically reared in small cages that lack key features of their natural habitats. These conditions impose constraints on behaviour and brain development, resulting in altered brain functions. In this article, evidence for three different ways in which barren housing conditions interfere with brain development and behaviour is reviewed. Early environmental deprivation, thwarting of behavioral response rules, and disruption of habitat-dependent adaptation processes are shown to result in aberrant or maladaptive brain functions. Current standard housing con

An amphetamine model of manic depressive illness.

Many features of manic-depressive illness can be mimicked in man by the use and withdrawal of amphetamines. In higher doses these drugs induce a syndrome virtually indistinguishable from paranoid schizophrenia. In this paper, some of the biochemical and physiological effects of the amphetamines are examined with the hope of clarifying the nature of the biological changes in these two major functional psychoses. The actions of the amphetamines are shown to reveal the operation of specific homeostatic or adaptive nervous mechanisms. These appear likely also to operate in adaptation to psychologi

Osteopathic Approach for Keloids and Hypertrophic Scars.

The skin is a complex organ, a system that influences and is influenced by the body system, with different skin layers always mechano-biologically active. In the presence of a lesion that damages the dermis, the skin undergoes sensory, morphological, and functional alterations. The subsequent adaptation is the formation of scar tissue, following distinct and overlapping biological phases. For reasons not yet fully elucidated, some healing processes lead to pathological scars, from which symptoms such as pain, itching, and functional limitations are derived. Currently, there is no gold standard

Frailty: the current challenge for aging people with HIV.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Older adults account for the majority of people with HIV (PWH) in high-income countries and have increasingly complex clinical profiles related to premature aging. Frailty is an important geriatric syndrome affecting a minority of PHW. Frailty negatively affects PHW's clinical status and quality of life. This review will update care providers on the current state of frailty that limits the healthspan of PWH. RECENT FINDINGS: Ongoing low-level HIV replication in treated PWH leads to immune activation and chronic inflammation contributing to the destabilization of normally au

COX-2-derived prostaglandins in cardiac hypertrophy: Dual roles in injury and repair.

Cardiac hypertrophy represents a primary adaptive response of the heart to both mechanical stress and neurohormonal stimuli. However, beneficial hypertrophic adaptation eventually gives rise to maladaptive structural changes in the heart, ultimately leading to heart failure. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), a stress-inducible enzyme participating in the metabolism of arachidonic acid-derived eicosanoids, has been recognized as a central modulator of the adaptive changes of the hypertrophic heart through the production of bioactive prostaglandins. However, a growing number of studies have demonstrated

Biological relevance and methodological implications of unexpected hearing thresholds in a diving bird.

Many animals alternate between different media, such as air and water, thanks to specific adaptations. Among birds, penguins (Sphenisciformes) have the most extreme morphological, physiological, and behavioural adaptations to their amphibious lifestyle. Their auditory perception of sound, potentially matching different impedances in air and under water, is largely unknown particularly in terms of whether their underwater adaptations may have affected their in-air hearing capacity. In this context, we investigated the hearing ability of four captive Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) in a
