An Investigation of Cardiovascular Risks in a Group of Children and Adolescents Who Use Atypical Antipsychotics.

This study was conducted to identify the metabolic parameters and body measurements associated with cardiovascular risks in a group of children and adolescents who as part of inpatient treatment received atypical antipsychotics at a psychiatric hospital in Turkey. Body mass indexes (BMIs), waist circumferences (WCs), diastolic blood pressures (DBPs), systolic blood pressures (SBPs) and heart rates (HRs) of the patients were evaluated during hospitalization and at discharge. A statistically significant difference was found among the mean BMIs, WCs, DBPs and HRs of the patients at the stages of

A prospective protocol for remotely investigating brain-behaviour-genetics associations in adolescent patients in a paediatric health system with pre-existing clinical brain MRIs.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a critical period marked by rapid brain development and the onset of many mental health disorders. Brain MRI studies during adolescence, especially when paired with behavioural phenotypes and information about genetic risk factors, hold promise to advance early identification of mental health risk and spur the creation of targeted treatments to improve patient function, prognosis and quality of life. However, prospective neuroimaging is costly and time-intensive, and individuals who participate may not be reflective of the general population. These challenges are c

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of adolescents and young adults with sickle cell disease at steady state in Uganda.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with chronic systemic morbidity that extends beyond acute crises. However, data describing the clinical and laboratory characteristics of adolescents and young adults with SCD at steady state in sub-Saharan Africa are limited. We described clinical and laboratory characteristics of adolescents and young adults with SCD at steady state in Uganda. We conducted a hospital-based cross-sectional study of 60 adolescents and young adults with SCD in steady state at Mulago National Referral Hospital. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize participant char

The increased susceptibility to airway infections after preterm birth does not persist into adolescence.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth is associated with increased risk of airway infections in childhood, more frequent purchase of prescription antibiotics and hospital admissions for airway infections. With this study, we aimed to investigate whether this association persists into adolescence. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal observational register-based study of a national cohort of all infants born in Denmark in 1992-2007. We used purchase of antibiotics, including penicillins and macrolides, and hospital admissions as proxies for milder and more severe forms of airway infections respectively

[Abuse in adolescence. Incest. Apropos of 21 cases].

While violent behavior and delinquency in youth have been extensively described, the different patterns of violence that adolescents are subjected to in their families are far less known. Physical abuse is probably as frequent as in childhood and offers some distinctive features because of its appearance or prolongation in adolescence. Moreover, sexual assaults become more important, especially in girls. From review of the literature and the experience of 21 cases of incest observed in the Adolescent Medicine Unit of Hospital Bicêtre, we discuss the circumstances, impact on adolescents and rol

METHODS: A stratified sample of live births from the Information System of Live Births in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, in the period 1996-98, was selected. The risk factors of LBW were analyzed for the two strata composed by the mother age, 15-19 and 20-24 years old. For the statistical analysis, odds ratios and correspondent confidence intervals were estimated. Logistic regression procedures were used. RESULTS: The LBW was significantly greater among the adolescent mothers grou

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding including coagulopathies and other menstrual disorders.

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB) is a frequent cause of visits to the emergency department and a major reason for concern among adolescents and their families. The most common cause of AUB, in otherwise healthy adolescents, is ovulatory dysfunction, although 5-36% of adolescents who present with heavy menstrual bleeding, have an underlying bleeding disorder (BD). The most common form of BDs is von Willebrand Disease, reflecting 13% of adolescents with AUB. Management of AUB depends on the underlying etiology, the bleeding severity, as well as the need for hospitalization. Treatment of adolescen

Preeclampsia and neonatal outcomes in adolescent and adult patients.

Preeclampsia is an important health problem with a higher prevalence in the adolescent population. Furthermore, preeclampsia causes adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Newborns can be affected by preeclampsia, resulting in lower birth weight or Apgar score, the need for neonatal intensive care, or prematurity. All these complications are also associated with adolescent pregnancies, and together with preeclampsia, it can determine poorer neonatal outcomes. The aim of the study was to compare the neonatal outcomes of adolescents and adults with preeclampsia. We analyzed data on all the newbo

Evaluation of a hospital-based youth violence intervention.

To decrease adolescent morbidity and mortality and improve the quality of life, a violence-prevention consultation is offered to hospitalized victims of nondomestic violence. The context is a violence-prevention team approach to patient assessment, treatment, and follow-up. Psychoeducational counseling emphasizes the individual through a cognitive behavioral approach and also recognizes the individual in the proximal social setting through referrals to community resources. The in-hospital component draws on the health beliefs model, self-efficacy, the theory of reasoned action and their synerg
