Health and socio-demographic profile of women of reproductive age in rural communities of southern Mozambique.

Reliable statistics on maternal morbidity and mortality are scarce in low and middle-income countries, especially in rural areas. This is the case in Mozambique where many births happen at home. Furthermore, a sizeable number of facility births have inadequate registration. Such information is crucial for developing effective national and global health policies for maternal and child health. The aim of this study was to generate reliable baseline socio-demographic information on women of reproductive age as well as to establish a demographic surveillance platform to support the planning and im

Gestational diabetes mellitus and obstetric outcomes in a Ghanaian community.

INTRODUCTION: This study was aimed at evaluating effect of Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and maternal characteristics on pregnancy outcome. GDM has several risk factors including; advanced maternal age, ethnic background, obesity and family history of diabetes mellitus. These pregnancy complications are associated with fetal morbidity and mortality and may lead to macrosomia and shoulder dystocia. Others are stillbirth, miscarriages, preterm and small for gestational age babies. METHODS: This was a retrospective case-case control study which compared maternal characteristics and pregnan…

Preimplantation diagnosis of the aneuploidies most commonly found in spontaneous abortions and live births: XY, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 21, 22.

The present preimplantation diagnosis test is able to screen for the most common aneuploidies from single blastomeres in about five hours with a 15 per cent misdiagnosis. This means that the risk of spontaneous abortion and trisomic offspring for women of advanced maternal age could be reduced to the same level as younger women for whom prenatal diagnosis is usually not necessary. Better probes and more fluorochromes could improve the success rate of the test.

Two autosomal trisomies in the horse: 64,XX,-26,+t(26q26q) and 65,XX,+30.

The phenotypic effects in a yearling Arab filly of a newly described equine autosomal trisomy syndrome for chromosome 30 (65,XX,+30) consisted of small size and severe angular deviation of front legs accompanied by mild polydactyly, but no mental dullness. This case was associated with advanced maternal age. Additional banding studies of a second trisomy case confirmed the assignment to chromosome 26 (64,XX,-26,+t(26q26q)) and evidence of her fertility was presented.

Maternal hypertensive disorders in East Asia, 1990-2023: incidence, deaths, DALYs and maternal mortality in women aged 20-54 years using GBD 2023.

OBJECTIVE: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are a major cause of illness and death and it can be prevented. METHODS: We analysed G … rate from 80.08 (58.66-106.68) to 4.73 (3.04-6.87). CONCLUSION: With the increasing proportion of advanced maternal age, we must optimize antenatal risk stratification, adopt context-appropriate prevention and treatment, strengthen emergency obstetric care, and establish systematic postpartum cardiovascular follow-up to reduce HDP incidence.

Pregnancy-Associated Venous Thromboembolism.

One of the leading causes of maternal death in the United States is venous thromboembolism (VTE), which is influenced by acquired, genetic, and environmental factors. Pregnancy-associated physiological changes that exhibit the characteristics of Virchow's triad: reduced fibrinolysis, increased coagulation factors, trauma, and venous stasis all raise the risk of VTE. Furthermore, multiple gestations, advanced maternal age, cesarean delivery, and obesity are all pregnancy-associated risk factors that also increase the risk of VTE. Management of VTE during pregnancy can be challenging due to the …

Microchimerism in the human brain, quantitative assessment and single nuclei profiling establish cell types and diversity.

Bi-directional maternal-fetal exchange during pregnancy creates a long-term microchimerism (Mc) legacy in both individuals, but its presence and cellular fate in human brain are largely unknown. We studied surgically resected epilepsy brain specimens with targetable maternal polymorphisms using polymorphism-specific quantitative PCR. Maternal Mc was prevalent, detectable in 70% of patients, and often at striking quantities spanning temporal, frontal, parietal, and hippocampal regions. Next, we employed single nucleus RNA profiling using cellector , a genetic demultiplexing tool designed to det

[Researchers show growing interest in antenatal mortality. Increased understanding of intrauterine fetal death may reduce the number of cases in the long run].

The incidence of intrauterine fetal death (from the 28th gestational week) is reported to be 3.6/1000 births in Sweden. Continuous improvements in perinatal care have resulted in a dramatic decrease in early neonatal mortality during the last few decades, but no comparable reduction of antenatal mortality has been observed. A better knowledge of the etiology of stillbirth is imperative to achieve a further decrease in the perinatal mortality rate. Advanced maternal age, smoking during pregnancy, maternal overweight/obesity and low socioeconomic class has been demonstrated to increase the risk …

Do maternal haemodynamics have a causal influence on treatment for gestational diabetes?

BACKGROUND: Arterial stiffening is believed to contribute to the worsening of insulin resistance, and factors which are associated with needing pharmacological treatment of gestational diabetes (GDM), such as maternal obesity or advanced age, are associated with impaired cardiovascular adaptation to pregnancy. In this observational study, we aimed to investigate causal relationships between maternal haemodynamics and treatment requirement amongst women with GDM. METHODS: We assessed maternal haemodynamics in women with GDM, comparing those who remained on dietary treatment with those who requ

Editorial: The acetaminophen scare: association vs causation.

With high twin concordance and sibling recurrence risk, the influence of genetic factors in the etiology of autism is not disputed. The contribution of environmental risk to the etiology of autism is less well established. While the prevalence increase observed worldwide has fueled beliefs of an epidemic driven by environmental changes, the evidence for such interpretations of the secular change in prevalence is lacking (Fombonne, 2025). In epidemiological surveys, no clustering in time or space has been reported that could point to candidate exposures. Thus, observational (cohort and case-con

Maternal mortality in Michigan: an epidemiologic analysis, 1950-1971.

An analysis was performed of direct maternal mortality over 22 years (1950 through 1971) in the state of Michigan. The overall direct maternal mortality rate fell from 5.0/10,000 live births in 1950 to 1.5 in 1971. The rate among nonwhites was more than four times greater than among whites and the difference in relative risk did not narrow over the 22 years. Mortality rates increased with increasing maternal age but not with increasing parity. Nulliparous women had a significantly higher mortality rate than did parous women, particularly those over 25 years of age. when the white gravida of ur

Association between maternal hepatitis B virus carrier and gestational diabetes mellitus: a retrospective cohort analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Given that many pregnant women have chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and that gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is linked to poor maternal and neonatal outcomes, we looked into the relationship between the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and GDM to see if a high HBV DNA load is linked to a higher risk of GDM in chronic maternal HBsAg carriers.
