A 3-mo-old red fox (Vulpes vulpes) developed generalized crusty plaques on its body during rehabilitation after an automobile accident requiring amputation of one leg. Histologic examination of skin lesion biopsy revealed granulomatous dermatitits with many intralesional protozoal tachyzoites. The protozoa stained positively with antibodies to Neospora caninum but not to Toxoplasma gondii. Treatment with clindamycin hydrochloride (10 mg/kg, twice daily, s.c.) for 1 mo completely resolved lesions, and protozoa were not demonstrable in biopsy of skin after treatment. Dry gangrene of the extremities in calves is a circulatory error that may occur after infection with Salmonella dublin. This report describes an examination of three affected, 12 in-contact and five control calves, a main objective being to investigate the possible role of cold agglutination in pathogenesis. The lesions included dry gangrene of the hind legs, ears and tail. A cold agglutination test gave positive results in all animals examined except the controls. Over five years the Bactec radiometric blood culture method yielded Salmonella typhi in 41 of 45 confirmed cases of typhoid fever, 90% of which were from the first culture set taken. Blood clot culture was positive in 18 (41%) of 44 confirmed cases and stool culture in 24 (59%) of 41. The yield from 2189 Widal clot cultures was only 0.03%. There were 68 positive results in 2258 unpaired Widal tests: 23 of them were falsely positive and 13 falsely negative, but in 11 out of 68 cases the Widal was the only positive laboratory test. The first Canadian case of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 12 infection is reported. The initial diagnosis was made with a urine specimen by a broad-spectrum enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; further serogrouping was done by indirect fluorescent-antibody and tube agglutination tests. This case emphasizes the importance of multivalent urinary antigen detection for the diagnosis of legionellosis.

We report a case of leptospirosis that was diagnosed in the early stage of infection by using flaB-PCR. The flaB gene of Leptospira was amplified from the DNA extract of the patient's blood at hospital day 1, while leptospiral antibody was negative by the method of microscopic agglutination test and micocapsule agglutination test at that time. Seroconversion occurred at hospital day 6 and Leptospira was isolated from the patient's blood at hospital day 16, demonstrating that flaB-PCR method was very useful in early diagnosis of leptospirosis.

ELISA kits from different commercial firms were evaluated and compared with monoclonal immunosorbent agglutination test ISAGA for detection anti-T. gondii IgM antibody. OBJECTIVE: To compare the sensitivities of all available serologic tests in detecting pseudorabies virus (PRV) antibodies in pigs during long-term latent pseudorabies.
DESIGN: Pigs experimentally infected with a virulent strain of PRV were maintained for 2 to 27 months after inoculation. At the time of necropsy of each pig, blood was collected for serologic evaluation, and tissues were obtained for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) verification of latency.

We developed a latex agglutination test to detect antigen(s) of serogroup 1 Legionella pneumophila in urine and evaluated its ability to diagnose legionnaires' disease. Antigen was detected in 46, or 70%, of 66 patients with serogroup 1 legionnaires' disease but in none of 51 patients with various bacteremic infections nor 60 with urinary tract infections. Leptospires were isolated from the kidneys of four of 211 toads (Bufo marinus) caught on Barbados. Two of the isolates were identified as Le … to 1:50. The predominating serogroups were Australis (50%), Autumnalis (23%) and Panama (13%). The agglutination tests on the culture-positive toads showed that serologic studies alone may be of limited value in these animals. Bufo marinus can harbor pathogenic leptospires, and it may be a significant source of the Autumnalis serogroup infections in the Caribbean.
