The role of parental disciplinary practices in the development of depression and alcoholism.

Awareness of child abuse has been growing over the past several decades as more cases have come to the attention of medical personnel and sc … experienced in childhood, both mild and severe, and the experience of major depressive episodes and alcoholism in adulthood in a general population sample, in whom disorder tends to be untreated and mild.

Disorders of the serum electrolytes, acid-base balance, and renal function in alcoholism.

This chapter reviews the disturbances of the serum sodium and potassium concentrations, acid-base imbalances, and acute renal dysfunction th … , ethylene glycol, or isopropanol) may also cause severe acidosis. Rhabdomyolysis, common in severe alcoholism, may produce various electrolyte disturbances and acute renal failure. The prognosis for recovery is good although temporary dialysis may be necessary.

Decreased liver delta-aminolaevulinate dehydratase activity in porphyria cutanea tarda and in alcoholism.

delta-Aminolaevulinate dehydratase activity was measured in liver biopsy specimens from 13 patients with porphyria cutanea tarda, 13 alcoholics and 10 control subjects. The mean enzyme activities in liver of porphyria cutanea tarda and alcoholics were 34% (P less than 0.001) and 49% (P less than 0.001) respectively of the control level. Heat treatment of liver supernatant caused slight inhibition of the enzyme activity in porphyria cutanea tarda and in controls. Addition of Zn2+ to liver supernatants slightly increased the enzyme activity in both porphyria cutanea tarda and controls. The addit

Alcoholic epilepsy. A definition and a description of other convulsions related to alcoholism.

The role of alcohol intake and withdrawal in so-called alcoholic epilepsy is discussed and illustrated by case reports. A classification is made which includes definitions of withdrawal convulsions, tetany-like withdrawal convulsions and alcohol-induced epileptic fits, with or without predisposing features.

Magnetoencephalography detects rectification of abnormal brain hypercorrelations following abstinence from alcohol in chronic alcoholism.

Here, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate changes in brain functional organization and their time course following alcohol abstinence in chronic alcoholic patients. Eighteen male veterans (10 control and 8 currently alcohol-dependent) participated in this study. MEG in alcoholic participants was obtained on various days, starting at day 3 of alcohol abstinence. A MEG scan consisted of a 45-s data acquisition period from 248 whole head axial gradiometers at a frequency of 1.017 kHz. All 30,628 pairwise zero-lag cross-correlations (CC0) between prewhitened sensor time courses per

Chronic Alcoholism and Propofol Demand: The Impact of Alcohol Tolerance in Painless Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Existing research suggests that chronic alcohol consumption may increase propofol requirements during anesthesia, though findings remain inconsistent. This study investigated the influence of chronic ethanol intake and alcoholic tolerance on propofol dosage in patients undergoing painless gastrointestinal endoscopy. METHODS: One hundred male patients with habitual alcohol consumption were enrolled. Drinking behavior was assessed using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and alcohol tolerance was also assessed by self-reporting. Propofol was infused using

Bad habits-good goals? Meta-analysis and translation of the habit construct to alcoholism.

Excessive alcohol consumption remains a global public health crisis, with millions suffering from alcohol use disorder (AUD, or simply "alcoholism"), leading to significantly reduced life expectancy. This review examines the interplay between habitual and goal-directed behaviors and the associated neurobiological changes induced by chronic alcohol exposure. Contrary to a strict habit-goal dichotomy, our meta-analysis of the published animal experiments combined with a review of human studies reveals a nuanced transition between these behavioral control systems, emphasizing the need for refined…

Identifying chronic alcoholism drug disulfiram as a potent DJ-1 inhibitor for cancer therapeutics.

As a key regulator involved in tumor development and progression, DJ-1 has been proposed as a potential therapeutic target against cancer. Also, the development of DJ-1 inhibitors holds great interests in cancer treatment. In the current study, by utilizing a small molecule covalent compounds library screening, we found that disulfiram (DSF), an FDA-approved chronic alcoholism drug, is a potent DJ-1 inhibitor. Glyoxalase assay and microscale thermophoresis analysis suggested that DSF exhibits strong inhibitory activity and high affinity to DJ-1 protein. Additionally, DSF similarly inhibited th…

Sexually dimorphic structural abnormalities in major connections of the medial forebrain bundle in alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: The mesocorticolimbic system is particularly susceptible to the effects of chronic alcoholism. Disruption of this system has been linked to drug seeking and the development of Reward Deficiency Syndrome, a neurobiological framework for describing the development and relapsing patterns of addictions. In this study, we evaluated the association of alcoholism and sex with major connections of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB), a prominent mesocorticolimbic fiber pathway connecting the ventral tegmental area with the basal forebrain. Given sex differences in clinical consequences of al…

Neurological, nutritional and alcohol consumption factors underlie cognitive and motor deficits in chronic alcoholism.

Variations in pattern and extent of cognitive and motor impairment occur in alcoholism (ALC). Causes of such heterogeneity are elusive and inconsistently accounted for by demographic or alcohol consumption differences. We examined neurological and nutritional factors as possible contributors to heterogeneity in impairment. Participants with ALC (n = 96) and a normal comparison group (n = 41) were examined on six cognitive and motor domains. Signs of historically determined subclinical Wernicke's encephalopathy were detected using the Caine et al. criteria, which were based on postmortem examin…

The alcohol-preferring (P) and high-alcohol-drinking (HAD) rats--animal models of alcoholism.

The objective of this article is to review the literature on the utility of using the selectively bred alcohol-preferring (P) and high-alcohol-drinking (HAD) lines of rats in studies examining high alcohol drinking in adults and adolescents, craving-like behavior, and the co-abuse of alcohol with other drugs. The P line of rats meets all of the originally proposed criteria for a suitable animal model of alcoholism. In addition, the P rat exhibits high alcohol-seeking behavior, demonstrates an alcohol deprivation effect (ADE) under relapse drinking conditions, consumes amounts of ethanol during…

[Clinical, pathogenetic and therapeutic aspects of panic disorder in patients with chronic alcoholism (review)].

Comorbid diagnosis of panic disorder and alcoholism is common in clinical practice. There are several theories that explained the comorbidity but no one of them has been completely proved. Sequence of disease manifestation in patients with comorbid pathologies remains unclear but different combinations may exist. Many studies suggest that anxiety disorders precede the development of alcoholism. Moreover, the prospective research has revealed that panic disorder is a highly significant predictor of alcoholism. The effectiveness of therapy was shown to be several times lower in the presence of c…

Interest in pharmacotherapy and primary care alcoholism treatment among medically hospitalized, alcohol dependent patients.

This study assessed medically hospitalized alcoholics attitudes about pharmacotherapy and interest in primary care-based treatment. The survey included 50 medical inpatients with current alcohol dependence. Participants were asked to indicate their agreement with the following statements: (1) I need to stop drinking, (2) Some medications can help prevent drinking, (3) If a medication did help prevent drinking, I would like to receive this from a doctor, and (4) I would like a primary care doctor to treat or help treat my drinking problems. Eighty-four percent agreed they needed to stop drinkin
