UNLABELLED: The burgeoning popularity of dental implant usage in the maxillary anterior region is well recognized. On the other hand, challenges involved in achieving optimal esthetics through implants have also been discussed extensively. Presence of labial/buccal bone in the maxillary anterior region is necessary for esthetic success of treatment, with or without the use of dental implants. This case report describes the multidisciplinary management of a rare case with severe loss of buccal bone confined to the maxillary central incisor region. A patient with a recent history of orthodontic

With the development of oral implantology the augmentation of the alveolar process and the maxillary sinus has become a more and more frequent procedure. Even though a vast array of bone replacement materials is available commercially, they all just have an osteoconductive effect. By now it has become clear that the 'gold standard' of bone grafts is autologous bone that is both osteoconductive and osteoinductive. Autologous bone is mostly harvested from intraoral sources. If a larger quantity of spongious bone is needed, it is from extraoral sites, mainly from the iliac crest. In some countrie

Vertical distraction of the alveolar process is an efficient method for augmentation prior to inserting dental implants. In this study, complications of this procedure and relapse of the transport segment were evaluated in partially dentulous patients. Twenty patients underwent distraction by means of extraosseous distractors. The location of the defects was the anterior mandible (4), posterior mandible (4), anterior maxilla (10) and posterior maxilla (2). Bone height was measured on panoramic radiographs preoperatively, after distraction and after implant placement at the mesial and distal po

OBJECTIVES: This clinical case represents a particular application of vertical distraction osteogenesis of the mandible. The surgical technique was applied to an iliac crest bone graft previously positioned on an anterior mandibular defect with the aim to restore the vertical height after a partial resorption in a trauma patient.
CASE REPORT: Distraction osteogenesis was applied because it was necessary to restore the mandibular height in a young male patient who presented with a post-trauma anterior mandibular bony deficiency. Because of the irregularity of the mandibular surface and the dep

OBJECTIVE: Presentation of a specific surgical technique of vertical alveolar ridge distraction performed on an alveolar bone graft 1 year after the primary grafting procedure designed to correct a labioalveolar cleft. The graft had not obtained the results desired and presented heavily scarred mucosal tissue.
TECHNIQUE: A dental implant placed within the graft once it has been entirely freed by osteotomies functions as an endless screw. To avoid vascular risk, the alveolar bone graft is detached as a whole along its total height. Consequently, no bone remains above it to provide support for

The problem of insufficient alveolar bone in the edentulous maxilla caused by resorption and pneumatization can be overcome by augmentation of the sinus floor to increase bone volume for the placement of dental implants. The quality of bone which is achieved after sinus floor augmentation is hardly known. This study describes the histologic results obtained three till six months after sinus floor augmentation with autogenous bone from the iliac crest in patients with severe maxillary bone resorption. The bone biopsies taken from the implant sites showed a substantial bone volume with a mature

BACKGROUND: Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) effectively increases alveolar bone volume and broadens orthodontic treatment options. However, bone grafting during PAOO faces challenges such as graft displacement, membrane collapse, and insufficient coronal bone regeneration. This study aimed to evaluate whether 3D-printed digital bone grafting guides could improve graft stability and alveolar bone regeneration compared with conventional PAOO.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 10 patients who underwent PAOO surgery were evaluated. Patients were divided equally

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Alveolar ridge asymmetry remains in patients with Class II maxillary defects reconstructed by osseo-myocutaneous flaps, leading to esthetic and functional issues. Implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (IFDPs) might have the potential to improve facial appearance related to this asymmetry, but studies on this topic are lacking.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to determine whether IFDPs effectively improve facial appearance related to alveolar ridge asymmetry after maxillary reconstruction by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) based on treating

Autogenous grafting of gingival or bone tissue is often indicated to obtain optimal esthetics and function in periodontal and implant therapy. In the present study, 32 maxillary teeth were extracted, and the postextraction defects were treated with 32 autogenous cylindric free gingival-bone grafts retrieved with trephine burs from intraoral donor sites. Free gingival-bone grafts were also used to obtain root coverage and papilla reconstruction in three patients who required esthetic enhancement. Twelve to 16 weeks after the graft procedure, biopsies were retrieved and processed for histologic

Mandibular fractures can occur with the insertion of endosseous implants. Four patients whose mandibles were fractured with the removal or insertion of mandibular endosseous implants are described. Three of the patients required an autogenous bone graft to repair the fracture, and 1 patient was managed with a reconstruction plate. Strategies for prevention and treatment of this uncommon complication are discussed.

A case of combined local surgical and prosthetic treatment in a patient with craniofacial dysostosis (Crouzon Syndrome) is described. The patient had atrophy and anterior fibrous replacement of the edentulous maxilla opposing natural mandibular anterior teeth and a lower removable partial denture. Initial prosthetic treatment alone was unsuccessful. The surgical management comprised augmentation of the maxilla with resorbable hydroxyapatite, in conjunction with a guided tissue regeneration technique and vestibuloplasty. This enabled conventional prosthetic management postoperatively to achieve

Osseointegrated dental implants placed into adequate bone enjoy a high success rate. However, placing implants into resorbed alveolar ridges can result in fixtures that are not optimally positioned or must be placed in insufficient bone, thus reducing their rate of success. Recently, techniques for bone regeneration developed for use around teeth have been applied to implant dentistry. Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR), also called Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR), uses thin membranes which act as barriers to soft tissue ingrowth. This approach for regenerating bone around implants is described i

The use of porous replamineform hydroxyapatites (Interpore-200) provides an opportunity for rapid stabilization of the ceramic implant by connective tissue and bony ingrowth into the porous network. The strength of the Interpore-200-tissue combination provides good resistance to denture forces. Once ingrown with tissue, the implants will remain well stabilized, appear resistant to local trauma, and have the capacity to heal if exposed, as a viable blood supply is contained within the material.

The rehabilitation of partially or totally edentulous patients with implant-supported prostheses has become routine, with excellent long-term outcome. A proper implant position is mandatory to achieve good functional and esthetic outcome and may require an adequate amount of alveolar bone and surrounding soft tissue. When this is lacking because of atrophy, sequelae of periodontal disease, traumas or congenital malformations, increased bone volume and/or keratinized mucosa can be obtained by guided bone regeneration, bone-grafting techniques and alveolar bone expansion. This article presents a
