A cautionary note: survival of nymphs of two species of ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) among clothes laundered in an automatic washer.

Host-seeking ticks often remain on clothing of persons returning home from work or recreation in tick habitats, and can pose at least a temporary risk to people and pets in these homes. Laundering clothing has been one of the recommendations to reduce tick exposure. Host-seeking lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.), and blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, nymphs confined in polyester mesh packets, were included with laundry in cold, warm, and hot wash cycles of an automatic clothes washer. Ticks were also placed with washed clothing and subjected to drying in an automatic clothes dry…

Diversity of ectoparasites in sheep flocks in São Paulo, Brazil.

The occurrence of ectoparasites in sheep flocks is frequently reported but seldom quantified. Sheep production used to be a predominantly fa … most frequent ectoparasite (72.5%), followed by bot fly larvae (Dermatobia hominis, 45.0%), ticks (Amblyomma cajennense) and Boophilus microplus, 31.3%) and finally lice (Damalinia ovis, 13.8%). Combined infestations also occurred, the most common one being screw-worm with bot fly larvae (36.0%) followed by bot fly larvae with ticks (13.9%), screw-worm wit …

Except for three Boophilus microplus female ticks, they were identified as Amblyomma cajennense and Anocentor nitens. A. cajennense had one generation per year, whereas An. nitens had three. Kinetes of B. caballi were detected in the haemolymph of two of 68 An. nitens female ticks and in the ovary and eggs of one of these, suggestin …

Mammalian wildlife diseases as hazards to man and livestock in an area of the Llanos Orientales of Colombia.

Development of the LLanos Orientales of Colombia, and access to underdeveloped areas in the Llanos, may create disease hazards to man and domestic animals or introduce exotic pathogens, creating reservoirs of infection for domestic animals and acting as limiting factors on the native wild species. A survey of wild animals common to the Llanos revealed a number of parasites indigenous to the area. A total total of 59 mammalian species, representing eight orders were examined. Haematozoa were represented by Trypanosoma cruzi, T. evansi and T. rangeli. Eight species of ticks were found: Amblyomma…

Rickettsia parkeri subverts nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) metabolic pathway for its survival in endothelial cells.

Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis is an emerging tick-borne disease in humans. The bacterium R. parkeri is primarily transmitted to humans by the Gulf Coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum. Upon transmission to the host, R. parkeri infects and multiplies in host endothelial cells. In this study, we provide evidence that R. parkeri modulates the host nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) pathway for its survival in endothelial cells. Analysis performed with arrays containing antibodies against proteins involved in different metabolic pathways revealed increased levels of BST1 (an NAD+-dependent mol…

Unraveling Alpha-Gal Syndrome: A Case Study of a Rare Meat Allergy.

Allergies are a very common pathology and their manifestations consist of a spectrum of presentations, ranging from minimal discomfort like a runny nose to lethal reactions like anaphylaxis and death. Meat allergy is not a very common form of allergy, even though there is a relatively high level of meat consumption. One of the rare forms of non-primate mammalian meat allergy is alpha-gal syndrome (AGS). It is related to IgE antibodies specific for galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-Gal). It is triggered in sensitized individuals due to multiple bites of lone star tick bites (Amblyomma americanum). H…

Distribution of ticks and their possession of spotted fever group Rickettsia in Ibaraki prefecture.

INTRODUCTION: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are a growing threat in Japan. However, distribution of ticks and their possession of human pathogens remain poorly understood. METHODS: In the present study, we collected 3477 ticks at 6 remote, woodland sites in Ibaraki prefecture between May 23 and November 4, 2021, and investigated the distribution and the possession of spotted fever group Rickettia (SFGR). RESULTS: The collected ticks included Haemaphysalis flava (78.3 %), Haemaphysalis longicornis (9.0 %), Haemaphysalis hystricis (4.6 %), Ixodes turdus (4.3 %), Amblyomma testudinarium (2.1 %), H…
