BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The detection rate of typical transient global amnesia (TGA) lesions on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can be improved, up to 85% with optimal DWI parameters and imaging time. There is limited evidence that these findings are similar to those observed in large-scale consecutive patients with TGA in clinical practice.
METHODS: Patients with clinically diagnosed TGA underwent magnetic resonance imaging studies, consecutively, with three sets of DWI parameters (standard clinical DWI protocols, the TGA DWI protocol I and the TGA DWI protocol II) in which the resolution,

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Different etiologies for transient global amnesia (TGA) have been proposed, such as venous flow abnormalities, spreading depression and migraine-related mechanisms like focal ischemia. Jugular vein valve incompetence (JVI) is commonly described in TGA patients, but its contributing role in TGA pathogenesis is still unknown. We investigated the possible relationship between JVI and pathogenetic mechanisms in TGA.
METHODS: 243 TGA patients underwent clinical and neurological assessment. Demographic characteristics, TGA-precipitating factors and vascular comorbidities were caref

Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) is a well defined pure amnesic clinical syndrome characterized by acute loss of memory in middle aged people. The aetiology of TGA is still unknown but clinical and neuroimaging studies support a hippocampi involvement, and some reports suggested a possible common genetic background in cases of familial TGA. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene that causes a valine to methionine substitution at codon 66 (Val66Met) has been demonstrated to affect human memory and hippocampal function in the development and mai

33 patients with transient global amnesia were examined by cerebral angiography. The presence of arterial lesions correlated with neurological symptoms, as well as with amnesia. In 55% of cases no pathological alterations were found, so that the pathogenesis of the transient global amnesia remained unclear. For clinical purposes, cerebral angiography is recommended only in those cases which show other neurological symptoms besides the transient global amnesia.

Acute amnestic syndromes are usually rare clinical events occurring in emergency situations. Etiological diagnosis can be challenging and underlying causes diverse. They can be transient and totally reversible, or accompanied by other neurological symptoms resulting in serious and irreversible brain damage. Pathophysiology of these syndromes mainly corresponds to structural or functional alteration of memory circuits, including those in the hippocampus. One of the most frequent forms is transient global amnesia (TGA), characterized by sudden onset of anterograde amnesia lasting less than 24 h

BACKGROUND: We report the case of a patient with recurrent episodes of disturbed memory suggestive of transient epileptic amnesia, and a focal hippocampal lesion typically associated with transient global amnesia. We argue how careful consideration of clinical, electrophysiological and imaging findings can resolve this apparent contradiction and lead to a diagnosis of early symptomatic post-stroke seizures that links brain structure to function in a new, clinically relevant way.

We report a 53-year-old female patient who presented a sudden dramatic memory disorder following coronary and cerebral angiography. The patient was disoriented and kept repeating the same questions about time and place. Transient global amnesia was ultimately diagnosed using the Hodges and Warlow criteria. We briefly discuss how to distinguish transient global amnesia from psychogenic amnesia, transient epileptic amnesia and transient ischemic attack.

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia is a clinical syndrome characterized by sudden onset of anterograde amnesia, often accompanied by repetitive questioning, lasting up to 24 hours with complete resolution and no other neurological deficits. This case series presents 9 patients who experienced transient global amnesia following sea swimming between 2019 and 2024 at Bantry General Hospital, a hospital located in a coastal town on the south of Ireland.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: Patients who presented with "amnesia" or "transient global amnesia" were identified through searching the hospital database

Global postoperative amnesia (profound anterograde and retrograde amnesia) is rare and usually attributed to transient global amnesia-a poorly understood condition with no broadly accepted mechanism. We report an incident of probable transient global amnesia in a patient after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram under general anesthesia, which was successfully treated with flumazenil. On the basis of the results of flumazenil administration in this and a previous case report, we would recommend a trial dose of 0.2 mg for cases of global postoperative amnesia, repeated if the first dos

The presence of small hippocampal hyperintense lesions on diffusion-weighted (DW) MRI can respond to different etiologies and represents a challenge where clinical judgment is imperative, since therapeutic approach may be quite different. We here report three patients with similar neuroradiological findings, i.e., hyperintense punctate hippocampal lesions on diffusion-weighted MRI sequences, yet of different origin. The first one presented with isolated amnesia (transient global amnesia), the second one with amnesia and seizures, and the third one with seizures. Thus, hippocampal punctate lesion

A so-called conscious post-traumatic twilight state ("besonnener Dämmerzustand") after a whiplash injury is described here, showing up its similarities with a classic post-traumatic conscious twilight state on the one hand and a classic transient global amnesia on the other hand. The term "conscious twilight state" is analysed and found inappropriate for the state it is meant to describe, and hence the term "post-traumatic transient global amnesia" is proposed instead. A post-traumatic transient global amnesia after whiplash injury is considered to be caused by a concussion.

Memory Loss - a Case of Sudden Amnesia Abstract. Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical diagnosis with typical signs of an anterograde and retrograde amnesia. The underlying mechanisms are yet unknown, different hypotheses are being discussed. Ultimately there is a temporary dysfunction of the hippocampi. Consistent with this, transient uni- or bilateral punctiform hyperintense lesions may be found on DWI-MRI sequences, usually without correlation on FLAIR-weighthed MR-images. Symptoms usually resolve within twenty-four hours. There is no need for a specific therapy. A prophylactic thera

This is a description of a previously healthy female who developed a memory deficit after running a 21-km race for the first time in her life. The memory problem lasted a few hours, during which time she was anxious, asking the same questions repeatedly. The effects of exercise on memory are discussed. Transient global amnesia, its associations and prognosis, is reviewed.
