BACKGROUND: Watchman 2.5 (Boston Scientific Inc, Marlborough, MA) implant success approaches 95% in registries, yet many patients are not attempted because of complex left atrial appendage (LAA) anatomy. Watchman FLX can expand the range of ostium width (14-31.5 mm) and depth available for LAA closure.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Watchman FLX in patients with a failed Watchman 2.5 attempt or prohibitive LAA anatomy.
METHODS: The roll-in (n = 58) and primary effectiveness (n = 400) cohorts of the PINNACLE FLX trial comprised the study popula

OBJECTIVES: Our study objective was to determine whether the presence of steal-prone anatomy conferred an increased risk in the development of intraoperative myocardial ischemia.
BACKGROUND: Coronary artery steal of collateral blood flow has been demonstrated for many vasodilators, including isoflurane, the most commonly used inhalational anesthetic agent in the United States. It has been postulated that patients with steal-prone anatomy (total occlusion of one coronary artery that is supplied distally by collateral flow from another coronary artery with a > or = 50% stenosis) may be particul

Embedding intersectional equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in anatomy education is essential to reflect the growing diversity of student populations, support all learners, and prepare graduates for a more inclusive, socially responsive global workforce. Anatomical textbooks and models have typically focused on white, cis-gender, able-bodied individuals who perpetuates biases and underrepresentation, impacting learners' professional development. We embedded five workshops in the junior honors BSc anatomy curriculum, which all adopted an intersectional EDI approach. These were strongly anch

OBJECTIVE: Anatomy, a foundational preclinical course in medical education, is crucial for students. However, a comprehensive comparison of case-based learning (CBL) and lecture-based learning (LBL) in anatomy instruction is lacking. This study investigates the effectiveness of CBL and LBL methods in a lower limb anatomy course, evaluating medical students' satisfaction, attitudes, knowledge, and skills.
METHOD: This prospective cohort comparison study was conducted over three academic years, using a hybrid instructional approach to accommodate COVID-19 protocols. Six groups of undergraduate

Fundamental to medical education, gross anatomy first introduces medical students to human mortality, often provoking stress. Sense of purpose, a key aspect of well-being, may serve as a protective factor. We studied students' sense of purpose during an anatomy course, examining its links to performance, spirituality, and belief in an afterlife. Fifty medical students who took a 7-week gross anatomy course in 2022 or 2023 completed the Life Engagement Test at the beginning, middle, and end of the course. We collected other data including demographics, religious/spiritual beliefs, and previous

Didactic lessons are only one part of the multimodal teaching strategies used in gross anatomy courses today. Increased emphasis is placed on providing more opportunities for students to develop lifelong learning and critical thinking skills during medical training. In a pilot program designed to promote more engaged and independent learning in anatomy, self-study modules were introduced to supplement human gross anatomy instruction at Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. Modules use three-dimensional constructs to help students understand complex anatomical regions. Reso

Cerebellar abnormalities have been reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Beyond its role in hallmark features of ASD, the cerebellum and its connectivity with forebrain structures also play a role in navigation. However, the current understanding of navigation abilities in ASD is equivocal, as is the impact of the disorder on the functional anatomy of the cerebellum. In the present study, we investigated the navigation behavior of a population of ASD and typically developing (TD) adults related to their brain anatomy as assessed by structural and functional MRI at rest. We used the Starm

OBJECTIVES: Traditional surgery for squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue is based on tumor excision with predefined safety margins. However, due to the complex anatomy of the tongue and multiple tumor spread pathways, this approach may fail to achieve adequate oncological control.
METHODS: Compartmental surgery has been proposed as an alternative approach, based on en-bloc resection of the tumor, cervical lymph nodes, and tumor-node tract, following anatomical pathways of spread. A literature review was conducted using the keywords: (tongue carcinoma) OR (tongue cancer) OR (oral cavity cance

As part of the jaw joint, the quadrate is a key skeletal element of the feeding system in nonmammalian vertebrates, which plays a critical role in resisting joint reaction forces (JRF). Some authors have suggested that the quadrate orientation reflects overall muscle anatomy and, by implication, JRF. Here, we quantitatively test the longstanding hypothesis that quadrate orientation is correlated with JRF orientation using the suchian lineage leading to extant crocodylia. The evolution of the characteristic crocodylian skull is a major transformation in vertebrate evolution in which the quadrat

A strong foundational understanding of anatomy is central to veterinary education. It is essential for acquiring clinical, surgical, and diagnostic skills in veterinary students. Veterinary anatomy is delivered by didactic lectures and laboratory dissection; however, maintaining student engagement during dissection can be challenging. This article outlines some pedagogical approaches that, if applied in a canine and feline anatomy course, could enhance student engagement and effective learning. Approaches that may be adopted include the provision of pre-matriculation materials on basic anatomi

Clinical literature indicates that pancreas divisum (PD) is present in 3-22% of the population and may be associated with an increased risk of pancreatitis. PD is a developmental variant wherein the duct systems derived from the dorsal and ventral pancreatic buds are not fused. Hence secretions from the head, neck, body, and tail, which develop from the dorsal bud, must pass through the minor duodenal papilla. The smaller uncinate process, derived from the ventral bud, drains through the major duodenal papilla. The purpose of this study was: (1) to do a cadaveric dissection to confirm whether

Endoscopic repair of orbital blow-out fractures could become a predictable and efficient treatment alternative to traditional methods. However, maxillary sinus endoscopy provides a complex and disorienting view of the orbital floor. To be a useful and consistent technique for providing access to the orbital floor, specific knowledge of maxillary endoscopic anatomy is required. The purpose of the study was to provide an anatomic description of the orbital floor via the endoscopic approach. Objectives include defining consistent landmarks for use in endoscopic repair of orbital floor fractures.
