Methylmercury-induced hair cell loss requires hydrogen peroxide production and leukocytes in zebrafish embryos.

Hearing impairment and deafness is frequently observed as one of the neurological signs in patients with Minamata disease caused by methylmercury (MeHg) poisoning. Loss of hair cells in humans and animals is a consequence of MeHg poisoning. However, it is still not clear how MeHg causes hearing deficits. We employed the hair cells of the lateral line system of zebrafish embryos as a model to explore this question. We exposed transgenic zebrafish embryos to MeHg (30-360 μg/L) at the different stages, and scored the numbers of hair cells. We find that MeHg-induced reduction of hair cells is in a

Neck abscess due to Salmonella Choleraesuis: case study and literature review.

Introduction. We herein describe a case with a neck abscess due to non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS). NTS habitually reside in our environment and colonize all animals including mammals. Colonizations of pigs, chickens, cows and sheep are important because food poisoning episodes in human are often associated with meat. Extra-intestinal infection due to NTS has numerous presentations and complications, with aortic aneurysms being common. Case presentation. A 26-year-old Japanese male complaining of left-sided neck swelling was referred to our hospital for a suspected deep neck abscess. An enhance

Evaluation of epididymal sperm quality following experimentally induced copper poisoning in male rats.

The trace element copper has been identified as a highly toxic element for spermatozoa. Our goal in this study was to assess relationship between copper poisoning and semen quality parameters. In this study, sixty male Wistar albino rats weighing 200-240 g (3.5-4 months old) were divided into three different groups of twenty rats as follows: the first group (Group 100), which was treated by gavage with copper sulphate at a dose of 100 mg kg(-1) day(-1) for 8 weeks; the second group (Group 200), which received 200 mg kg(-1) day(-1) copper sulphate by gavage during experimental period (56 days);

Effect of alpha-ketoglutarate on neurobehavioral, neurochemical and oxidative changes caused by sub-chronic cyanide poisoning in rats.

Recent studies revealed that alpha-ketoglutarate (A-KG) alone or with sodium thiosulfate (STS) provide significant protection against acute and sub-acute cyanide poisoning in rodents. This study addresses the protective effect of A-KG and/or STS in sub-chronic (90 days) cyanide poisoning. Wistar rats were divided into seven groups (n = 10): Control animals, potassium cyanide (KCN) A-KG, STS, KCN + A-KG, KCN + STS and KCN + A-KG + STS. Spontaneous motor activity and motor coordination were recorded every 15th day. Lipid peroxidation (LPO), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx)

Interactions between Staphylococcus aureus and lactic acid bacteria: an old story with new perspectives.

Staphylococcus aureus is a gram positive opportunistic pathogen and a major concern for both animal and human health worldwide. In some contexts where Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) are the normal dominant microbiota, such as in fermented food or in the vaginal ecosystem, S. aureus sometimes colonises, persists, expresses virulence factors and produces food poisoning or urogenital infections, respectively. Studies on the interactions between LAB and S. aureus began a few decades ago and were pursued to shed light on the inhibitory capabilities that LAB might have on S. aureus growth and/or enterot

Is mannitol the treatment of choice for patients with ciguatera fish poisoning?

CONTEXT: Ciguatera fish poisoning arises primarily from consumption of carnivorous reef fish caught in tropical and sub-tropical waters. Ciguatoxins, a class of tasteless, heat-stable, polycyclic toxins produced by dinoflagellates, accumulate through the food chain and concentrate in various carnivorous fish, such as groupers, barracudas, wrasses, amberjack, kingfishes, and eels. Characteristics of ciguatera fish poisoning include early nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea in the first one to two days post ingestion, followed by the appearance of sensory disturbances. The classic dysaesthesia is col

Campylobacteriosis, Salmonellosis, Yersiniosis, and Listeriosis as Zoonotic Foodborne Diseases: A Review.

Zoonoses are diseases transmitted from animals to humans, posing a great threat to the health and life of people all over the world. According to WHO estimations, 600 million cases of diseases caused by contaminated food were noted in 2010, including almost 350 million caused by pathogenic bacteria. Campylobacter, Salmonella, as well as Yersinia enterocolitica and Listeria monocytogenes may dwell in livestock (poultry, cattle, and swine) but are also found in wild animals, pets, fish, and rodents. Animals, often being asymptomatic carriers of pathogens, excrete them with faeces, thus deliverin

Staphylococcus aureus biofilm: the role in disseminating antimicrobial resistance over the meat chain.

Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for severe skin and respiratory infections and food poisoning, resulting in hospitalizations and high morbidity worldwide. Staphylococci have extensive virulence mechanisms and antimicrobial resistance that pose a global challenge to contain the spread of infectious outbreaks. Antimicrobials are used as growth promoters, and for prevention and treatment of infections in animals that provide us with food. The improvement of animal health is undeniable, but the selection of multidrug-resistant strains that can spread resistance genes among microorganisms is u

Evidence for a role of mast cells in the lung edema induced by Tityus serrulatus venom in rats.

In the most severe cases of human poisoning by Tityus serrulatus, pulmonary edema is a frequent finding and can be the cause of death. Mast cells can release a range of mediators known to be involved in the development of lung edema following T. serrulatus venom injection. The present work was designed to investigate whether mast cells participated in the acute lung injury induced by T. serrulatus scorpion venom and could, thus, be an intermediate between neuropeptide release and activation of the inflammatory cascade. To this end, mast cells were depleted using compound 48/80. Pulmonary edema

Long-term Respiratory Effects of Mustard Vesicants.

Sulfur mustard and related vesicants are cytotoxic alkylating agents that cause severe damage to the respiratory tract. Injury is progressive leading, over time, to asthma, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, airway stenosis, and pulmonary fibrosis. As there are no specific therapeutics available for victims of mustard gas poisoning, current clinical treatments mostly provide only symptomatic relief. In this article, the long-term effects of mustards on the respiratory tract are described in humans and experimental animal models in an effort to define cellular and molecular mechanisms contributing to

Food toxins and the Caribbean Parkinson plus types.

In the 90's, clinico pathological studies have considerably improved the diagnosis of specific and rare neurodegenerative diseases. After a training in Parkinsons' disease in Paris, the author moved to French West Indies (Guadeloupe) and observed a high incidence of atypical parkinsonism with dementia, unresponsive to levodopa. Similar features were observed in Martinique. An environmental origin has been suspected with the exposure to toxins of annonaceae leaves and seeds. The candidate toxins are acetogenins acting as mitochondrial poison. This was demonstrated in neuronal cell cultures, and

A case of Anthrax in two captive pumas (Puma concolor).

In this study, we aimed to report anthrax cases in two pumas, brought to the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Erciyes University for suspected poisoning upon their sudden death at the Kayseri Zoo, in Turkey. In the necropsy, enlargement and malacia were observed in the spleens. The cut surfaces of the spleens were in extreme red-blackish color. Bacillus anthracis was isolated as a pure culture from both samples which belong to dead pumas. B. anthracis isolates had pXO1 and pXO2 plasmids. Both isolates were found to be sensitive to eight antibacterials tested. This study de

Update on staphylococcal superantigen-induced signaling pathways and therapeutic interventions.

Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) and related bacterial toxins cause diseases in humans and laboratory animals ranging from food poisoning, acute lung injury to toxic shock. These superantigens bind directly to the major histocompatibility complex class II molecules on antigen-presenting cells and specific Vβ regions of T-cell receptors (TCR), resulting in rapid hyper-activation of the host immune system. In addition to TCR and co-stimulatory signals, proinflammatory mediators activate signaling pathways culminating in cell-stress response, activation of NFκB and mammalian target of rapamycin

Clinical hepatotoxicity. Regulation and treatment with inducers of transport and cofactors.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a rare condition. This review presents a clinical update on the incidence and prevalence of DILI, cellular targets and histopathological features of liver injury, and basic diagnostic approaches. At present, with the exception of acetaminophen poisoning where timely administered N-acetylcysteine serves as the antidote, treatment usually is supportive. Since most biotransformation processes in the liver are under the control of nuclear receptors (NR), treatment modalities aiming to stimulate or inhibit NR expression are at present tested in animal models of A

Gases in agricultural slurry stores.

The evolution of gases during the handling of animal slurry was investigated at five sites. Particular attention was paid to the mixing and emptying operations since it is when performing these that personnel are most likely to be at risk of exposure. The main hazard was found to be high transient concentrations of hydrogen sulphide presenting in some cases a serious acute toxicity problem. Time-weighted average exposures did not generally indicate any long-term exposure risk. Other features noted were the evolution of ammonia and methane, although not at high levels, and some increase in the

Resistance to acute renal failure afforded by prior renal failure: examination of the role of renal renin content.

In this study, rats recovering from glycerol-induced acute renal failure were found to be protected from mercury-induced nephropathy, and HgCl2 poisoning protected rats from developing myohemoglobinuric renal failure. In view of the widely disparate nature of the renal failure models used, refractoriness appears to relate to an altered sensitivity of the organism itself rather than reflecting resistance to a particular nephropathic challenge. Renal renin content of the rats at the time of rechallenge was normal or high, a finding which contrasts sharply with that of chronically saline-loaded a

Carnitine in Alleviation of Complications Caused by Acute Valproic Acid Toxicity; an Exprimental Study on Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperammonemia and hepatotoxicity are well-known complications of valproic acid (VPA) poisoning. The objective of this study is to evaluate the potential role of carnitine in mitigating the adverse effects of acute VPA toxicity in mice. METHODS: 54 male mice (25-30 g) were randomly assigned to one of three categories, including acute, sub-acute, and chronic poisoning. Each category contained 3 groups, each consisting of 6 mice (Group 1: control, Group 2: VPA treated, and Group 3: VPA + carnitine treated). The animals were sacrificed 24 hours after the initial injection, and thei

Prevalence and Characterization of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus from Animals, Retail Meats and Market Shopping Vehicles in Shandong, China.

Staphylococcus aureus has been recognized as an important foodborne pathogen and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) can cause fatal infections worldwide. Of great concern is that MRSA have been found in animals and non-healthcare settings; however, knowledge about the prevalence and genetic characteristics of S. aureus, especially MRSA from animals, retail meats and market shared shopping vehicles in the same district, is limited. In this study, we collected 423 samples including handrail swabs (n = 226) of shopping trolleys and baskets from 18 supermarkets, retail meats (n = 137) and swin
