Of 1,400 consecutive patients applying to an outpatient clinic for treatment of alcoholism, 477 complained of upper abdominal dyspepsia. After 2 weeks of abstinence, 78 had persisting complaints; of these, 72% had oesophagitis at endoscopy. The 53 patients with oesophagitis as the sole diagnosis were randomized to treatment with either ranitidine or a combination of alginate/antacid chewing tablets and metoclopramide for 6 weeks in a double-blind, double-dummy design. In a randomized multicentre study of 149 patients with gastric ulcer the effect of 1000 mg cimetidine daily applied in four separate doses was compared to that of 400 mg cimetidine twice a day. In both patient groups similar healing rates were observed. 80.3% and 74.0%, respectively, of the ulcers healed within 6 weeks, and 93.8% and 90.3%, respectively, within 10 weeks. Abdominal pain and antacid consumption decreased under both regimens to a similar degree. Drug safety was good. Lower cost and simplicity in the administration make the b. i. d. regimen of cimetidine preferable to the q. i. d.

A double-blind randomized controlled study with pirenzepine (75 mg/day), cimetidine (1 g/day) and placebo was performed in 50 consecutive out-patients with duodenal ulcer. Reflux gastritis is a symptom-complex consisting of antacid-resistent epigastric pain, nausea and frequent vomiting, weight loss and anaemia, sometimes with evident gastrointestinal haemorrhage. A randomized controlled trial was performed to study the efficacy of Syn-Ergel with an active placebo in the treatment of heartburn of pregnancy in ninety-two patients completing 7 days of therapy.
