INTRODUCTION: Sirenomelia is a very rare congenital structural anomaly characterized by abnormal development of the caudal region of the body with varying degrees of fusion of lower limbs. Mostly, the condition is lethal for the baby. Most babies do not survive even after surgery. Fifty percent of cases are seen as stillbirths, and it is much more common in identical twins.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a boy born in 38th week of gestation (hebdomas graviditatis-HBD) with diagnosed sirenomelia, microcephaly, bilateral renal agenesis, duodenal atresia, imperforate anus, and agenesis of ext

Pallister-Hall syndrome (PHS) comprises hypothalamic hamartoma, polydactyly, pituitary dysfunction, laryngotracheal cleft, imperforate anus, and other anomalies. Some patients with PHS have a bifid epiglottis, a rare malformation. Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome (GCPS) comprises polydactyly with craniofacial malformations without the PHS malformations. Both disorders are caused by mutations in the GLI3 gene. Laryngoscopy on 26 subjects with PHS showed that 15 had a bifid or cleft epiglottis (58%) and none of 14 subjects with GCPS had a cleft epiglottis. The malformed epiglottis was asympt

A newborn term male infant was found to have the stigmata of VACTERL syndrome, including cervical and thoracic hemivertebra, partial sacral agenesis, 13 pairs of ribs, high imperforate anus with rectovesical fistula, and tracheoesophageal fistula with proximal esophageal atresia. No open spinal dysraphism or skin dimpling was seen. Ultrasonography of the spinal cord was performed to screen for occult anomalies. The examination revealed a lipoma of the filum terminalis and a low-lying conus medullaris at the L3-L4 level with a large central cystic structure in the terminal cord, which was conti

Johannes Fatio was probably the first surgeon who systematically studied and treated surgical condition of children. Born in Basle in 1649, he never studied medicine at the university there but became a member of the barber's guild. Later he studied medicine and became a doctor of the University of Valence. He returned to Basle to practice surgery, midwifery and paediatric surgery. He wrote a number of medical books, but only one, The Helvetic Reasonable Midwife, still exists. In it he devotes a whole section to surgical afflictions of children. He describes ingenuous operations for such condi

Rectal prolapse is the protrusion of the rectum out of the anus. Surgical correction can be accomplished via open and minimally invasive abdominal approaches, as well as from the perineum. Robotic rectopexy is an option for minimally invasive treatment of rectal prolapse. There are no studies that have established the efficacy of robotic rectopexy for rectal prolapse in the pediatric population. The aim of this study was to review the experience of robotic rectopexy at a single institution. This is a retrospective review of our pediatric robotic rectopexy experience from 2012 to 2015. We reviewed 9 children with unilateral massive (III and IV, Dwoskin-Perlmutter) vesicoureteral reflux associated with congenital mechanical obstruction of the lower urinary tract. Four children with bilateral reflux with bilateral difference of severity more than 2 grades were also included. Obstruction was attributed to posterior urethral valve in 5, anterior urethral stricture in 3 and mega-urethra in 1. The chief complaints were febrile episodes and urinary infection, followed by voiding difficulty, bed wetting and/or urinary incontinence and voiding through anus. All 4 children with troubl

The development of conjoined twins always catches the eyes of researchers and clinicians. Beyond the rareness of the cases, how they develop is a debatable issue. This report presented a case of ischiopagus conjoined twins who had two heads (dicephalus), four upper extremities (tetrabrachius), and were joined below the chest with two lower extremities (bipus). The twin's mother was referred from a primary hospital to Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospital for proper management of twin pregnancy, where a cesarean section was performed. The mother and her husband have no family history of bir

Fanconi anemia is a rare chromosome instability disorder with a highly variable phenotype. In the antenatal and neonatal periods, the diagnosis is usually suggested by the presence of typical congenital abnormalities such as intrauterine growth retardation, microcephaly and radial ray defects. We report a newborn female with a prenatal diagnosis of Fanconi anemia, complementation group O (FANCO). Antenatal ultrasounds identified symmetrical intrauterine growth retardation, complex heart defect as well as brain anomalies, overlapping fingers and cleft lip and palate. Imperforate anus was detect

Congenital pouch colon is a form of anorectal malformation, rarely reported outside north India. Hallmarks of this malformation are a short colon containing a large distal pouch with a fistula connecting to the urinary system. Herein, the authors report the case of a Thai male neonate with a congenital pouch colon type II who was initially misdiagnosed as a common imperforate anus. As a result, urinary tract infection and metabolic acidosis developed after a colostomy. A definitive surgery consisting of a tabularized coloplasty and an abdominoperineal pull-through was performed at one month of

Mutations in the GLI3 gene have been identified in several human malformation syndromes. One of these autosomal dominant developmental disorders is Pallister-Hall syndrome (PHS; MIM146510), which is associated with central polydactyly and other malformations. Interestingly, the mutations in the GLI3 transcription factor gene identified in patients with PHS are restricted to the region 3' of the zinc finger-encoding domain, leaving this DNA-binding domain intact. We have investigated the consequences of this mutation on the development of multiple organ systems by introducing a targeted mutatio

We present the first report of a female fetus with concomitant isochromosome 18q [i(18q)] and cloacal dysgenesis sequence. Prenatal sonographic examination at 15 weeks' gestation showed intra-uterine growth retardation, a normal brain, a normal spine, congenital megacystis and oligohydramnios. The pregnancy was terminated. The abortus displayed dysmorphic features of a high forehead, hypertelorism, a prominent nose with a bulbous tip, median cleft lip and palate, micrognathia, low-set ears, a short neck, a joint contracture at the wrist, prominent heels and pseudo-hermaphroditism. BACKGROUND: Surgical vaginoplasty is a highly successful treatment for congenital absence of the vagina. One key to long-term success is the use of an appropriate vaginal mold in the immediate postoperative period. We present the use of a three-dimensional (3D)-printed vaginal mold, customizable to the anatomy of individual patients.
TECHNIQUE: Vaginal molds were designed using a 3D modeling software program. The design included narrowing around the urethra, holes for egress of secretions, and a knob for insertion and removal. Dental resin was 3D-printed into various-sized vaginal molds, and

A combination of gastrointestinal and urogenital congenital abnormalities was diagnosed and surgically treated in a kitten. Physical examination, exploratory laparotomy, castration, histological examination, and cytogenetic karyotyping were utilized to determine the true gender of the kitten. The kitten was confirmed to be a male (38 XY) pseudohermaphrodite with Type II atresia ani and rectovaginal fistula.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic-assisted anorectoplasty (LAARP) was introduced in 2000 by Georgeson (J Pediatr Surg. 2000;35:927-930) and has gained interest because of improved visualization of the rectal fistula and the ability to place the pull-through segment within the levator muscle complex with minimal dissection. Currently, there is no consensus on how the fistula should be managed during LAARP. We postulated that the fistula could be managed with simple division and temporary diversion of urine through a Foley catheter without surgical ligation of the fistula similar to the management of a t

Atresia ani, a common genetic defect in animals, is often accompanied by urogenital defects in calves. This paper reports a case of atresia ani with diphallus and separate scrota in a calf. The calf was born with atresia ani; surgery (to open the anus) was performed 3 days after birth. No urogenital abnormalities were noticed until 4 months after birth. At that time, two separate scrota (each containing a testis) and a sac-like structure in the middle of two scrota, were visible. The gait was abnormal, with abduction of the hind limbs while walking. Additionally, the hind legs appeared wider t

The association of epidermolysis bullosa (EB) and pyloric atresia (PA) in newborns is rare but has been well described. It has been reported that in patients with EB, the esophageal, gastric, intestinal, and colonic mucosae are affected. The authors report a case of EB and PA associated with esophageal and anal atresia in a newborn. To our knowledge, these associations had not been reported in the English-language literature.

An analysis of findings of clinical and ++roentgenological examinations of 55 patients with ectopy of the anal canal prior to operation and 68 patients after correction of the defect has shown that secondary megacolon developed in proportion with the age and degree of the outlet opening stenosis and there appeared injuries of elements of the normally formed anal canal. The authors described their original many-steps operation of the formation of the anus which allows all elements of retaining feces to be preserved. The amount of good long-term results increased from 22-26% up to 75% as compare

The early recognition and treatment of correctable lesions of the terminal spinal cord in patients with anorectal malformations may preserve important neurologic function. Tethered cord and intraspinal masses are detectable with the use of high-resolution ultrasonography in the neonate. Fourteen infants and children with anorectal malformations and associated spinal dysraphism have been identified in our institution over the past 7 years. Six patients had cloacal exstrophy, and eight had imperforate anus (four high and four low lesions). The spinal lesions caused symptoms in only seven childre
