Neonatal anterior cervical arachnoid cyst: case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior cervical arachnoid cysts are rare in the pediatric population, with only 16 cases reported. We present the first case of … taken for posterior cervical laminoplasty and cyst fenestration. Intraoperatively, diffuse cervical arachnoiditis was noted. Rapid improvement in upper extremity paresis was noted within 24 h of surgery, and MRI confirmed decompression of the cyst. However, flaccid upper extremity paresis recurred within 2 weeks. MRI confirmed recurrence of the anterior cervica …

Sacral epidural noncommunicating arachnoid cyst. Case report and review of the literature.

The authors examine the natural history of a spinal epidural arachnoid cyst and present their experience with its treatment in a 25-year-old man who presented with progressive cauda equina syndrome. Neuroimaging revealed two neighboring sacral epidural cysts. The cysts were completely removed via a sacral S1-4 laminectomy; no communication with the subarachnoid space could be found. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful. He experienced progressive improvement and, finally, complete resolution of symptoms and no recurrence of the cyst. Nabors Type I sacral epidural arachnoid cysts a

Spinal arachnoid cyst causing paraplegia following skull base surgery.

A 40-year-old woman presented with a right petroclival meningioma compressing the brainstem and manifesting as a 6-month history of headache and gait difficulty. The patient underwent subtotal removal of the tumor via an anterior transpetrosal approach. The postoperative course was complicated by cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, bacterial meningitis, and acute hemorrhagic rectal ulcer. The patient was discharged home in good condition after prolonged medical treatment. Four months after the surgery, the patient noted recurrence of gait difficulty. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the brain sh

Spontaneous development of a de novo suprasellar arachnoid cyst. Case report.

Arachnoid cysts are commonly thought to arise from either congenital defects or trauma. In this article the authors report the spontaneous development of a suprasellar third ventricular arachnoid cyst whose origin was not clearly congenital or traumatic. At the age of 4 months, the patient presented with hypertonia, and a magnetic resonance (MR) imaging study showed no abnormalities. At the age of 2 years, the boy presented with headaches and projectile emesis, symptoms that prompted further imaging studies. An MR image of the brain revealed a suprasellar cyst and obstructive hydrocephalus. Th

Expansion of arachnoid cysts in children: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Arachnoid cysts are intracranial, space-occupying lesions that typically remain stable in size on serial imaging. The authors describe two cases of rapidly enlarging arachnoid cysts, including one located in the anterior fossa. In the first case a 7-month-old boy presented with increasing head circumference and a rapidly enlarging arachnoid cyst in the left middle fossa, which had been documented by serial imaging over the preceding 6 months. In the second case a 4-year-old girl presented with an arachnoid cyst compressing the right frontal lobe. The cyst had not been present on imaging studie

Pre- and postnatal MR imaging of hypothalamic hamartomas associated with arachnoid cysts.

We describe two cases of hypothalamic hamartoma associated with arachnoid cysts. One case was initially documented on prenatal MR images. Because of the rarity of the association and resultant distortion in regional anatomy, the solid component of the mass may be overlooked. This would certainly be true when using lower-resolution diagnostic studies such as fetal MR imaging. The lesion could also be confused with a cystic tumor such as pilocytic astrocytoma. Thorough evaluation is required in patients with precocious puberty, gelastic seizures, and the presence of a suprasellar arachnoid cyst.

MRI of spinal intradural arachnoid cyst formation following tuberculous meningitis.

Secondary intradural arachnoid cyst involving the spine is uncommon. It is usually secondary to trauma, haemorrhage, surgery or inflammation. We present two cases of treated tuberculous meningitis, which presented with gradual onset of quadriplegia and paraplegia, respectively. MRI revealed intradural (cervical and thoracic) arachnoid cysts (ventral and dorsal to the spinal cord) with myelomalacic cord changes. Ventral location of such spinal arachnoid cysts, and being secondary to tuberculous arachnoiditis are distinctively uncommon features. The rarity of this condition and the relevance of …

Spontaneous arachnoid cyst rupture in a previously asymptomatic child: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Arachnoid cysts are benign congenital cavities arising in the subarachnoid space. Non-traumatic subdural effusion of cerebrospinal fluid is a rare complication requiring surgical treatment. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital because of symptoms related to acute intracranial hypertension (headache and vomiting). The cerebral CT-scan revealed a subdural hygroma adjoining a voluminous Sylvian arachnoid cyst. Two arachnoid cysts were incidentally discovered 11 years before this dramatic complication. Moreover, the patient had suffered a cerebral concussion 2 y

Symptomatic spinal arachnoid cysts: report of two cases with review of the literature.

STUDY DESIGN: Two unusual cases of intradural extramedullary noncommunicating arachnoid cysts are presented, with a review of literature. OBJECTIVE: To assess surgical excision results in the reversal of symptoms and neurologic deficits. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Most patients harboring arachnoid cysts are asymptomatic. Noncommunicating intradural extramedullary arachnoid cysts are more rare than communicating intradural extramedullary cysts. Noncommunicating intradural extramedullary arachnoid cysts are a very rare cause of spinal cord compression. Rarely, these cysts can present with biz

Spontaneous resolution of a prepontine arachnoid cyst. Case report and review of the literature.

Prepontine arachnoid cysts are rare developmental anomalies that occur almost exclusively in children. The symptomatic child typically suffers from hydrocephalus, visual impairment, endocrine dysfunction and/or cranial neuropathies. Some cysts, however, are discovered incidentally upon prenatal or postnatal imaging for other indications. While there is little doubt that surgical treatment should be initiated to help the symptomatic child, appropriate therapy for the asymptomatic patient is unclear. Although arachnoid cysts are often managed conservatively using serial imaging, the consequences

Familial arachnoid cysts in association with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a systemic disorder well-known for its association with intracranial aneurysms. Recently, intracranial arachnoid cysts have also been reported to be associated with ADPKD. We describe a father and daughter who each has a posterior fossa arachnoid cyst and asymptomatic ADPKD. To our knowledge, this is the first report of familial occurrence of arachnoid cysts in association with ADPKD.

Contribution of extracranial lymphatics and arachnoid villi to the clearance of a CSF tracer in the rat.

The objective of this study was to determine the relative roles of arachnoid villi and cervical lymphatics in the clearance of a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tracer in rats. 125I-labeled human serum albumin (125I-HSA; 100 micrograms) was injected into one lateral ventricle, and an Evans blue dye-rat protein complex was injected intravenously. Arterial blood was sampled for 3 h. Immediately after this, multiple cervical vessels were ligated in the same animals, and plasma recoveries were monitored for a further 3 h after the intracerebroventricular injection of 100 micrograms 131I-HSA. Tracer reco

Subdural hygroma in association with middle fossa arachnoid cyst: acetazolamide therapy.

Intracranial arachnoid cysts are cerebrospinal fluid-filled collections between arachnoid layers. While many are silent, arachnoid cysts can become symptomatic if there is sudden expansion, haemorrhage or rupture with the development of subdural hygroma or subdural hematoma. Several studies have demonstrated the association of arachnoid cysts with subdural hygroma and subdural hematoma. We describe a 9-year-old girl with a moderate-sized middle-fossa arachnoid cyst and bilateral frontal subdural hygroma presenting with raised intracranial pressure. She was treated with acetazolamide which resu

Intracranial arachnoid cysts: Treatment alternatives and outcome in a series of 25 patients.

A series of 25 patients with intracranial arachnoid cysts is analyzed retrospectively. There were 14 males and 11 females ranging in age between a few days and 58 (mean 10) years. Seventy-six percent of patients were children below the age of 15 years. Most of the patients presented with symptoms and signs of long-standing raised intracranial pressure, while localizing signs were rather uncommon. The clinical manifestations were often mild relative to the large size of the cyst. Associated hydrocephalus was present in three patients: one with suprasellar cyst and two with posterior fossa cysts

Traumatic interdural arachnoid cyst in the upper cervical spine. Case report.

The case of an interdural arachnoid cyst of traumatic origin at the C3-5 level in an 18-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a 1-year history of progressive weakness in left limbs and numbness below the clavicles is reported. He had had a C-2 fracture at the age of 9 years without definite neurological deficits. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic lesion in the C3-5 level. Laminectomy was performed, and an interdural cyst was found. Histological examination revealed fibrous thickening of the arachnoid membrane. A cyst located in the interdural space of upper cervical spine i
