Relationship between exposure to ionizing radiation and mesothelioma risk: A systematic review of the scientific literature and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ionizing radiation and mesothelioma have been examined among personnel employed in nuclear power plant and patients treated by external beam radiation therapy (EBRT). The association is still controversial; the purpose of this review is to summarize the scientific evidence published in the literature regarding the relationship between ionizing radiation and incidence of mesothelioma and, if possible, estimating strongness of the association by meta-analysis of extracted data. METHODS: Articles included in the systematic review were retrieved by searching among the three main scien

Bilateral thalamic and mesencephalic infarctions with hypopituitarism as long-term complications postradiotherapy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Radiation is widely used as the first-line treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and improves survival. Nevertheless, radiation also places the patients at risk of radiation-induced adverse effects, such as transient ischemic attack, ischemic stroke, hypopituitarism, and cranial nerve and temporal lobe dysfunction. CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old woman who had undergone radiation treatment for NPC 14 years earlier and had no cerebrovascular risk factors, visited our department 4 days after sudden onset of consciousness disturbance. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed

PRONTOX - proton therapy to reduce acute normal tissue toxicity in locally advanced non-small-cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Primary radiochemotherapy with photons is the standard treatment for locally advanced-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Acute radiation-induced side effects such as oesophagitis and radiation pneumonitis limit patients' quality of life, and the latter can be potentially life-threatening. Due to its distinct physical characteristics, proton therapy enables better sparing of normal tissues, which is supposed to translate into a reduction of radiation-induced side effects. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a single-centre, prospective, randomised controlled, phase II clinical

Polypodium leucotomos inhibits ultraviolet B radiation-induced immunosuppression.

BACKGROUND: An extract of the tropical fern Polypodium leucotomos (PL) administered orally to mice inhibits ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation-induced skin cancer formation. UVB-induced murine skin cancers occur, in part, because of UVB-induced immunosuppression. Thus, we examined whether PL inhibits UVB-suppression of the induction of contact hypersensitivity (CHS) locally or systemically. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice received standard drinking water or water-containing PL. In the local model, mice were shaved on the dorsum and exposed to 3500 J/m(2) of UVB radiation daily for 4 days. Control mice were

Mechanistic insights into the learning curve of cryoballoon ablation: ablation temperature mediates the effect of operator experience on radiation exposure.

BACKGROUND: Cryoballoon ablation (CBA) for atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with reduced procedural radiation exposure as operator experience accumulates, yet the mechanistic underpinning of this improvement remains incompletely characterized. We hypothesized that ablation temperature parameters, reflecting balloon-tissue contact quality, serve as a quantifiable mediator linking operator experience to radiation dose. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 804 consecutive patients undergoing first-time CBA for symptomatic AF at a single tertiary center. Cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis iden
