Of the 56 S. aureus strains tested, five (8.9%) isolates (four from asymptomatic nasal carriage and one from a non TSS staphylococcal disease) demonstrated TSST-1 production in vitro. An outbreak of Salmonella enteritidis infections occurred in Otaru, Japan, in September 1997. A total of 143 cases of salmonellosis were reported to the local Public Health Center. In this outbreak, one case had a 214-hr incubation period. Infectious diseases occurred in 26 of 30 renal homotransplantation patients and contributed to eight of the 12 deaths in this series. An outbreak of erythromycin-resistant, exfoliative toxin-producing Staphylococcus aureus infection in a neonatal unit is described. The organism was coagulase positive but staphyloslide negative, and this unusual phenotype facilitated early recognition of the organism in the routine laboratory. In the initial outbreak there were 77 probable or confirmed cases, with a peak attack rate of 66%.
