Effect of autonomic neural influences on the cardiovascular changes induced by coronary occlusion.

The influence of vagal stimulation and/or beta-adrenergic receptor blockade on the heart rate, blood pressure, contractile force, and cardiac rhythm was evaluated in chloralose-anesthetized cats subjected to occlusion of the anterior descending coronary artery. Occlusion performed in 25 control animals produced significant decreases in heart rate (minus 22.9 plus or minus 4.4 beats per minute), blood pressure (minus 19.2 plus or minus 2.4 mm. Hg), and contractile force (minus 21.6 plus or minus 6.3 per cent). Death due to ventricular fibrillation occurred in five out of 25 animals. Coronary oc

Ketamine Alters Outcome-Related Local Field Potentials in Monkey Prefrontal Cortex.

A subanesthetic dose of the noncompetitive N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist ketamine is known to induce a schizophrenia-like phenotype in humans and nonhuman primates alike. The transient behavioral changes mimic the positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms of the disease but the neural mechanisms behind these changes are poorly understood. A growing body of evidence indicates that the cognitive control processes associated with prefrontal cortex (PFC) regions relies on groups of neurons synchronizing at narrow-band frequencies measurable in the local field potential (LFP). Here, we

A marked point process approach for identifying neural correlates of tics in Tourette Syndrome.

We propose a novel interpretation of local field potentials (LFP) based on a marked point process (MPP) framework that models relevant neuromodulations as shifted weighted versions of prototypical temporal patterns. Particularly, the MPP samples are categorized according to the well known oscillatory rhythms of the brain in an effort to elucidate spectrally specific behavioral correlates. The result is a transient model for LFP. We exploit data-driven techniques to fully estimate the model parameters with the added feature of exceptional temporal resolution of the resulting events. We utilize

An Unexpected Cause of Bradycardia in a Patient with Bacterial Meningitis.

Sinus bradycardia which is a sinus rhythm with a resting heart rate of less than 60 bpm is caused by intrinsic cardiac disorders like sick sinus syndrome or inferior myocardial infarction, metabolic and environmental causes (such as hypothyroidism and electrolyte disorders), medications (such as beta-blockers and amiodarone), infection (such as myocarditis), increased intracranial pressure, and toxic exposure, while it can sometimes be a normal phenomenon, especially during sleep, in athletes, and during pregnancy. Symptomatic sinus bradycardia should warrant a thorough work-up in order to ide

[Hypothyroidism substitution and adrenal insufficiency in diabetic patients].

As diabetes mellitus type 1 is part of the polyglandular autoimmune syndrome it is no wonder that autoimmune disorders of the thyroid are in diabetics about five times more common and adrenal insufficiency four times more common than in general population. Manifest hypothyroidism leads to the decrease in insulin sensitivity and increase of glucose stimulated insulin secretion. These changes are reversible by substitution. Even subclinical hypothyroidism increases demand on pancreatic beta cell. The glucocorticoid insufficiency causes marked increase of insulin sensitivity, decrease of endogeno

[Lightning stroke].

A case is reported of a 23 year old white man who was struck by lightning. The patient suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest. Immediately, he received external cardiac massage and artificial breathing, which were successful. He was then admitted to an intensive care unit, where the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction was made, on the basis of electrocardiographic abnormalities, a significative elevation of cardiac enzymes, and ultimately a thallium-201 scintigraphy. There were no complications of this heart injury, except for a persistent sinus tachycardia, which was treated by the infu

Clinical experience with intravenous metoprolol in supraventricular tachyarrhythmias. A multicentre study.

The efficacy of metoprolol, 5-15 mg i.v., in the treatment of supraventricular tachyarrhythmias was evaluated in a multi-centre study involving 142 patients, 28 of whom had paroxysmal atrial tachycardia, 35 atrial flutter and 79 atrial fibrillation. A good control of heart rate (reduction of greater than or equal to 25% or to less than 100 beats/min) was obtained in 68% of the patients and a further 18% showed a reduction in heart rate of at least 10% or to less than or equal to 150 beats/min. Conversion to sinus rhythm occurred in 57% of the patients with paroxysmal atrial tachycardia. As wou

Putative mechanisms mediating tolerance for audiovisual stimulus onset asynchrony.

Audiovisual (AV) speech perception is robust to temporal asynchronies between visual and auditory stimuli. We investigated the neural mechanisms that facilitate tolerance for audiovisual stimulus onset asynchrony (AVOA) with EEG. Individuals were presented with AV words that were asynchronous in onsets of voice and mouth movement and judged whether they were synchronous or not. Behaviorally, individuals tolerated (perceived as synchronous) longer AVOAs when mouth movement preceded the speech (V-A) stimuli than when the speech preceded mouth movement (A-V). Neurophysiologically, the P1-N1-P2 au

Beta2 oscillations (23-30 Hz) in the mouse hippocampus during novel object recognition.

The oscillatory activity of hippocampal neuronal networks is believed to play a role in memory acquisition and consolidation. Particular focus has been given to characterising theta (4-12 Hz), gamma (40-100 Hz) and ripple (150-250 Hz) oscillations. Beyond these well-described network states, few studies have investigated hippocampal beta2 (23-30 Hz) activity in vivo and its link to behaviour. A previous sudy showed that the exploration of novel environments may lead to the appearance of beta2 oscillations in the mouse hippocampus. In the present study we characterised hippocampal beta2 oscilla

Pectus Excavatum-Induced Preload Insufficiency Presenting as Long-Standing Sinus Tachycardia.

BACKGROUND: Severe pectus excavatum is an uncommon cause of hemodynamic compromise in adults and may present with unexplained tachycardia when preload filling is impaired by cardiac compression. CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old woman with long-standing palpitations presented with sinus tachycardia despite high-dose beta-blockade. Electrocardiogram and ambulatory monitoring showed sinus rhythm with marked heart rate variability. Right heart catheterization revealed low filling pressures, with a mean right atrial pressure of 1 mm Hg and preserved cardiac output. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance sho

Task-Dependent Cortical Oscillatory Dynamics in Functional Constipation.

Functional constipation (FC) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder thought to arise from the brain-gut axis dysfunction, yet direct human neurophysiological evidence is lacking. We recorded high-density electroencephalography (EEG) data in 21 FC patients and 37 healthy controls across resting, cognitive, and defecation-related tasks. We observed that FC patients displayed a consistent, task-dependent signature compared with healthy controls. At the regional level, FC patients exhibited increased alpha during both resting and defecation-related tasks, reduced temporal gamma during de

Altering alpha-frequency brain oscillations with rapid analog feedback-driven neurostimulation.

Oscillations of the brain's local field potential (LFP) may coordinate neural ensembles and brain networks. It has been difficult to causally test this model or to translate its implications into treatments, because there are few reliable ways to alter LFP oscillations. We developed a closed-loop analog circuit to enhance brain oscillations by feeding them back into cortex through phase-locked transcranial electrical stimulation. We tested the system in a rhesus macaque with chronically implanted electrode arrays, targeting 8-15 Hz (alpha) oscillations. Ten seconds of stimulation increased alp

[Efficacy of Transdermal Patch of Bisoprolol for Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation after Open Heart Surgery].

2014 American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) guidelines recommend beta blocker for prevention and management of perioperative atrial fibrillation and flutter for thoracic surgical procedures. In recent years, transdermal patch of bisoprolol (TDPB) has become available in Japan. We examined the efficacy of TDPB for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) after open heart surgery. Among 289 patients who had undergone open heart surgery in our hospital from December 2013 to April 2016, 48(16.6%)patients, for whom TDPB was used for PAF, were analyzed retrospectively. The summary of our PAF p

Complete atrioventricular block in an adolescent with rheumatic Fever.

Rheumatic fever is an acute inflammatory sequela following a group A, beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection. Rheumatic fever is characterized by polyarthritis, carditis, chorea, subcutaneous nodules, and erythema marginatum as the major diagnostic criteria. Rarely, advanced heart block may also occur. A 13-year-old boy was admitted to the Pediatric Department for evaluation and management of complete atrioventricular block. The patient had exertional dyspnea for 1 month. Based on the findings of mitral regurgitation, fever, elevated acute phase reactants, and a high antistreptolysin O titer,

[Autonomic tests in survivors of acute phase of myocardial infarction. Feasibility, tolerance, and safety].

In order to assess practicability and safety of simple autonomic tests in survivors of acute phase of myocardial infarction (MI) attempts to carry out active orthostatic test, tests with controlled breathing (6 and 15 breaths per min), and Valsalva maneuver were performed in 210 patients on days 4-11 of MI. All patients had no signs of severe heart failure, were in sinus rhythm and did not interrupt standard therapy which included beta blockers. Tests were not completed in 14 patients (4.8%): orthostatic test in 6 due to hypotension, Valsalva maneuver in 3 because they did not reach required p

Bifid T waves induced by isoprenaline in a patient with Brugada syndrome.

A 41 year old man with incomplete right bundle branch block and persistent coved-type ST elevation in the right precordial leads during sinus rhythm had an episode of syncope while driving. He had never had syncope before and there was no family history of sudden cardiac death. Ventricular fibrillation was induced during electrophysiological study (EPS) by double extrastimuli applied to the right ventricle. Disopyramide was effective in preventing ventricular fibrillation during EPS. beta Adrenoceptor stimulation manifested bifid T waves and reduced ST segment elevation in right precordial lea

[Pharmacology of modern anti-arrhythmia drugs in therapy of supraventricular tachycardia].

Prevention of recurrences of atrial fibrillation, slowing the ventricular rate during atrial fibrillation, and the acute management of atrioventricular junctional reentrant supraventricular tachycardia (paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia) often require treatment with antiarrhythmic drugs. These drugs comprise a pharmacodynamically and pharmacokinetically heterogeneous group of agents whose individual properties determine correct use, contraindications and side effects. Stabilisation of sinus rhythm can be achieved with class IA and class IC sodium channel blocking drugs as well as with th
