Retraining Gastrocnemius Muscle Coordination Reduces Late-Stance Knee Contact Force in Individuals With Knee Osteoarthritis.

Musculoskeletal simulations and experiments in young adults without knee pain have demonstrated that reducing gastrocnemius muscle activity can reduce knee contact force, which may reduce pain and progression of knee osteoarthritis. This study investigated whether individuals with knee osteoarthritis could reduce gastrocnemius electromyography (EMG) when provided with haptic biofeedback and consequently reduce late-stance knee contact force. Individuals with tibiofemoral osteoarthritis walked on a treadmill with adaptive biofeedback instructing them to reduce gastrocnemius EMG. Thirteen of eig

Biofeedback therapy using Cerebri for the prevention of migraine attacks in adults with episodic migraine (BioCer): a randomized, wait-list controlled trial - the study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Biofeedback is a non-pharmacological treatment option valued for its minimal risk of adverse events and offers a safe alternative for individuals seeking preventive care for migraine. Despite level A evidence for migraine prevention, biofeedback treatment is still unavailable to most patients. We developed a novel medical device (Cerebri) for multimodal biofeedback treatment that omits the need for healthcare personnel involvement. Cerebri consists of a smartphone application (app) and two wireless sensors. Unique in its approach, the Cerebri app seamlessly integrates three biofe

Biofeedback training versus botox injection for the treatment of dyssynergic defaecation: A randomized controlled trial.

AIM: Dyssynergic defaecation (DD) is a condition characterized by impaired relaxation or paradoxical contraction of the puborectalis muscle and external anal sphincter during defaecation. This dysfunction leads to chronic constipation and obstructed defaecation, significantly impacting quality of life. The aim of this work was to compare biofeedback (BFB) training and botulinum toxin type-A (BTX-A) injection in the management of DD. METHOD: This a randomized, controlled, intervention including 78 patients complaining of DD. The patients were classified into two categories each comprising 39 p

Synchronous surface electromyography as objective method to evaluate the outcome of a biofeedback training in patients with facial synkinesis.

Facial aberrant reinnervation after unilateral facial paralysis is characterized by facial synkinesis and global facial muscle hypertonicity. Therefore, therapy effort is directed on improved facial symmetry by reducing facial synkinesis and the elevated muscle tone. There are no established methods to confirm these aims objectively. Therefore the aim of the present study was to verify if high-resolution surface electromyography (HR-sEMG) mapping of the entire face during standardized facial movements is one such sought-after method. Bilateral HR-sEMG facial mapping was performed in 36 patient

Effect of EMG-activated vibrotactile biofeedback on skill learning in children with genetic and acquired dystonia during point-to-point and cyclic task practice.

OBJECTIVE: Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions and abnormal movements. Often, repeated practice does not lead to motor improvement in children with acquired dystonia, likely because of sensory deficits, which may contribute to their impairment. Therefore, improvements in sensory function might improve motor performance. In this study, we propose that augmented vibrotactile biofeedback may improve motor learning in children with acquired dystonia but not in children with genetic dystonia who do not have associated sensory deficits. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS

Diagnosis and Management of Fecal Incontinence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to highlight current and newer therapeutic approaches to treat fecal incontinence in patients who do not respond to conservative measures. RECENT FINDINGS: Neurostimulation techniques, injection of bulking agents, and radiofrequency energy delivery to the anal canal have been proposed and tested for fecal incontinence over the last decade. Sacral stimulation is both effective and durable and is now the most popular of the invasive techniques whereas percutaneous tibial stimulation, radiofrequency energy, and bulking agents are either less effec

Rumination syndrome: pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Rumination syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by effortless and repetitive regurgitation of recently ingested food from the stomach to the oral cavity followed by either re-swallowing or spitting. Rumination is thought to occur due to a reversal of the esophagogastric pressure gradient. This is achieved by a coordinated abdominothoracic maneuver consisting of a thoracic suction, crural diaphragm relaxation and an increase in intragastric pressure. Careful history is important in the diagnosis of rumination syndrome; patients often report "vomiting" or

A smartphone based cardiac coherence biofeedback system.

Cardiac coherence biofeedback training consist on slowing one's breathing to 0.1 Hz in order to simulate the baroreflex sensitivity and increase the respiratory sinus arrhythmia efficiency. Several studies have shown that these breathing exercises can constitute an efficient therapy in many clinical contexts like cardiovascular diseases, asthma, fibromyalgia or post-traumatic stress. Such a non-intrusive therapeutic solution needs to be performed on an 8 to 10 weeks period. Even if some heart rate variability based solutions exist, they presented some mobility constrain rendering these cardiac

Long-term hand tele-rehabilitation on the PlayStation 3: benefits and challenges.

Rehabilitation interventions for the hand have shown benefits for children with Hemiplegia due to cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury. Longer interventions are facilitated if training is provided in the patient's home, due to easier access to care and reduced impact on school or work activities. Providing remote rehabilitation over lengthy periods of time has however its own challenges. This paper presents two pediatric patients with hemiplegia, who practiced virtual hand rehabilitation games using a modified PlayStation 3 and 5DT sensing gloves. Despite severe initial hand spasticity, an

Feedback-related negativity effects vanished with false or monetary loss choice.

Feedback-related negativity (FRN) is sensitive to both monetary loss and evaluation of the correctness of a response. This study used a gambling task that required participants to choose between two cards that were unpredictably associated with monetary gains or losses. Feedback stimuli then indicated gain or loss, and the correctness of the participant's choice. Greater FRN amplitudes for loss versus gain conditions were observed when participants guessed correctly, as well as for incorrect versus correct conditions when they made gain choices. Conversely, FRN effects were absent after either

QEEG studies in the assessment and treatment of childhood disorders.

Quantifying EEG measures across age allows the ability to establish parameters of normalcy at any age which can be used as a reference when children exhibit developmental delays in their abilities and/or other atypical and maladaptive behaviors. A review of the current literature on the utilization of QEEG methods to serve as an aid for identifying these children as distinctively different from normal, and in some cases as distinctive from other clinical considerations has been shown to provide a sufficient sensitivity and specificity worthy of consideration as a diagnostic aid in evaluating c
