Clinical translation of the assets of biomedical engineering - a retrospective analysis with looks to the future.

Introduction: Biomedical-engineering (BME) plays a major role in modern medicine. Many BME-based assets have been brought to clinical translation in the twentieth century, but translation currently stagnates. Here, we compare the impact of past and present scientific, economic and societal climates on the translation of BME-based assets, in order to provide the BME-community with incentives to address current stagnation.Areas covered: In the twentieth century, W.J. Kolff brought kidney dialysis, the total artificial heart, artificial vision and limbs to clinical application. This success raise

Transdiscipline and research in health: science, society and decision making.

Significant advances in science should be given to addressing the needs of society and the historical context of the territories. Although technological developments that began with modernity and the industrial revolution allowed human beings to control the resources of nature to put to your service without limits, it is clear that the crisis of the prevailing development models manifest themselves in many ways but with three common denominators: environmental degradation, social injustice and extreme poverty. Consequently, today should not be possible to think a breakthrough in the developmen

The role of research methodology in the rational use of technology in monitoring and preventing communication disorders.

Studies showing stronger scientific evidence related to speech, language and hearing pathology (SLP) have an impact on the prevention and rehabilitation of human communication and gained ground in SLP research agenda. In this paper we discuss some aspects and directions that should be considered for in-depth knowledge about speech, language and hearing needs in different population groups (age group, gender and other variables according to specific related disorders) for improved comprehensive care, successful efforts and effective use of financial and human resources. It is also discussed the

Remotely accessible optical microscopy education through a wide (and global) lens.

Access to rigorous optical microscopy education remains unevenly distributed across the globe despite widespread use of optical methods. While lower-resourced settings certainly feel this burden, it is far from a foregone conclusion that such opportunities are ubiquitous, even at well-funded institutions. Despite a growing number of online educational resources and other tools, many biomedical researchers learn microscopy in a task-specific manner, and without the conceptual foundation to maximise the potential of its capabilities, robustly interpret data, avoid bias, and/or troubleshoot effec…

Distinct challenges faced by surgeons in conducting and publishing surgical research: implications for training, ethics, and academic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Surgical research is beset by a distinct set of challenges that differ meaningfully from those encountered in other medical disciplines. Despite surgeons' historic contributions to medical advancement, the proportion of surgeon-authored publications has declined relative to total medical literature output over the latter half of the twentieth century. This narrative review aims to comprehensively identify, categorise, and discuss the specific barriers surgeons face in conducting and publishing surgical research, with implications for surgical training, research ethics, and academic

The use of race and ethnicity in sickle cell disease research.

This study explores practices surrounding the operationalization of ethno-racial categories (ERCs) as confounders in biomedical research, with a focus on sickle cell disease (SCD) as a model. ERCs, often aggregate labels encompassing diverse individuals which raises questions about their relevance as confounders. Given SCD's racialization as a "Black" disease, understanding ERC utilization is crucial. This study analyzed 1,105 SCD studies published globally. Data were collected on whether ERC adjustment was employed, regional variations in ERC-adjustment rates, labels used for ERCs, rationales…

The Role of Institutional Review Boards in Improving the Inclusion of Sex and Gender as Variables in Clinical Research.

In orthopaedic clinical research, as in other fields, sex and gender-specific analyses are not consistently performed, despite evidence of sex differences in outcomes. Both institutional review boards (IRBs) and journal editors have a role in impacting the rate at which such analyses are performed and reported. The authority, responsibilities, and potential actions of IRBs are discussed herein, with the aim of setting investigator expectations and propelling changes to the study plan before the research is initiated.

Fostering the Next Generation of Researchers: a Sustainable Mentoring Program for Early Career Toxicologists in Scientific Abstract Review.

The presentation of abstracts at scientific meetings is an important step in the dissemination of scientific discovery. Most scientific meetings recruit volunteer experts to evaluate and score submitted abstracts to determine which ones qualify for presentation. Reviewing an abstract is an important service to one's specialty, but there is typically no formal training or required instruction during medical toxicology fellowship on scientific abstract scoring. In order to provide structured training in abstract review, the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) Research Committee launche
