Having a blood transfusion carries risks for patients. To minimise these risks, nurses must be aware of the ABO group system, components of blood and how they should be stored, handled, checked and administered. They must also be aware of possible adverse events during or after transfusion, how to monitor patients and how to deal with adverse events should they occur. All staff involved at any stage must be trained and aware of hospital policy and all actions must be accurately recorded to ensure the process is as safe as possible.

CONTEXT: ABO isoagglutinins, particularly anti-A and anti-B antibodies, are clinically significant in transfusion medicine due to their potential to cause hemolytic reactions in recipients of ABO-incompatible blood components. Evaluating the distribution of isoagglutinin titers in group O donors is essential for enhancing transfusion safety.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess and compare anti-A and anti-B immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG titers among group O whole blood and plateletpheresis donors and explore their association with donor age and type.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-se

Hemorrhage remains the leading cause of death from potentially survivable injuries in both military and civilian trauma. Whole blood (WB) has repeatedly proven to be the most physiologically coherent resuscitation strategy for life-threatening hemorrhage, yet modern transfusion systems have historically prioritized inventory efficiency and component fractionation over biologic fidelity. This syllabus synthesizes contemporary military and civilian evidence for WB resuscitation, with emphasis on fresh WB (FWB) obtained through walking blood banks (WBBs) and low-titer group O WB (LTOWB), the pred

Donor - recipient sex - mismatched transfusion is associated with increased mortality. The mechanisms for this are not clear, but it may relate to transfusion-related immunomodulation. Recently, CD71+ erythroid cells (CECs), including reticulocytes (CD71+ RBCs) and erythroblasts, have been identified as potent immunoregulatory cells. The proportion of CD71+ RBCs in the peripheral blood is sufficient to play a potential immunomodulatory role. Differences in the quantity of CD71+ RBCs are dependent on blood donor sex. The total number of CD71+ RBCs in red cell concentrates is also affected by bl

Blood transfusion systems have greatly benefited human health and welfare. Nevertheless, some problems remain: infection, blood type mismatching, immunological response, short shelf life, and screening test costs. Blood substitutes have been under development for decades to overcome such problems. Plasma component substitutes have already been established: plasma expanders, electrolytes, and recombinant coagulant factors. Herein, we focus on the development of red blood cell (RBC) substitutes. Side effects hindered early development of cell-free hemoglobin (Hb)-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) an

Blood groups had associations with many diseases that affect blood transfusion services by increasing or decreasing the blood demand of particular blood group. The present study was designed to compare the frequency of ABO and Rh blood groups among blood donors and blood component recipients. The ABO and Rh(D) blood groups of donors and recipients were determined using Gel card method. The frequency of blood donors and blood component recipients from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2023, at regional blood transfusion centre of Delhi, were compared using χ² test. The ABO blood group frequencie

INTRODUCTION: Antibodies of the Kidd blood group system are associated with hemolytic transfusion reactions and, less commonly, hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. Naturally occurring antibodies against Kidd antigens are exceedingly rare, with a limited number of cases reported worldwide. We report a case of a naturally occurring anti-Jka antibody detected in a 6-month-old male infant.
METHODS: The patient was admitted with a high fever after routine age-appropriate vaccinations. He had no history of blood transfusion, underlying disease, or perinatal complications. Blood, urine, and

Massive haemorrhage in elective surgery can be either anticipated (e.g. organ transplantation) or unexpected. Management requires early recognition, securing haemostasis and maintenance of normovolaemia. Transfusion management involves the transfusion of packed red cells, platelet concentrates and plasma (fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate). Blood product support should be based on clinical judgment and be guided by repeated laboratory tests of coagulation. Although coagulation tests may not provide a true representation of in vivo haemostasis, they do assist in management of haemostatic

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-associated hypotension (TAH) is characterized by the abrupt onset of hypotension immediately after the start of transfusion and usually resolves when transfusion ceases. The pathogenesis of TAH is not yet fully understood.
METHODS: A 36-year-old woman underwent exploratory laparotomy and cesarean section due to cervical squamous cell carcinoma. During surgery, the patients experienced acute, profound intraoperative hypotension within 5 minutes after the initiation of the prestorage leukocyte-reduced suspension red blood cells (RBC) transfusion. Transfusion of blood components has been associated with poor patient outcomes and, an overall increase in morbidity and mortality. Differences in the blood components arising from donor health, age and immune status may impact on outcomes of transfusion and transfusion-related immune modulation in recipients. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in inflammatory profile in donors and association with parameters including age, gender and deficiency status of pattern recognition molecule mannose-binding lectin (MBL). MBL level was determined by ELISA. Serum levels of interleukin

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD) is a rare, nearly universally fatal complication from transfusion of nonirradiated cellular blood components, occurring when a recipient's immune system is unable to recognize and destroy transfused T lymphocytes. Irradiation of cellular components eliminates this risk. We present an unusual case of a liver transplant recipient developing TA-GVHD 13 weeks after transfusion of a random unit of nonirradiated red blood cells (RBCs) that happened to be from a donor homozygous for an HLA haplotype shared by the patient.

INTRODUCTION: Although the transfusion of blood products is a common therapy, it carries risk of transmission of infections, especially hepatitus B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
OBJECTIVE: As part of the blood safety initiative, the Pan American Health Organization supported studies to estimate the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis B virus infection in Colombia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February and September 2003, a cross sectional study examined 500 multiply-transfused patients at four hospital centers in the cities of Bogota and Medellin.

BACKGROUND: Despite major demographic changes, several decisions and initiatives, among which Patient Blood Management, have led to a significant reduction in the transfusion of packed red blood cells (RBCs) in Belgium, as it has been observed in many countries. Unfortunately, not all blood groups were proportionately impacted and shortage in O D-negative RBCs is regularly or chronically observed. The goal of this study was to examine how to optimize the use and the supply of O D-negative blood in our academic hospital.

RATIONALE: An allergic transfusion reaction is a common side effect of transfusions of red blood cells. Using washed red blood cells is the most effective method for preventing such a reaction. However, the availability of other washed transfusion components, including platelets, is limited.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 69-year-old patient with acute myeloid leukemia progressed from myelodysplastic syndrome and was treated with azacitidine. She experienced a minor reaction to platelet transfusion that initially responded to the administration of corticosteroids and antihistamines. However, she worsene

The general objective is the study, through scientific approaches, of the main components of immunological risks linked to red blood cell transfusions, as well as their consequences, in order to define precise rules for prevention, taking into account that 2,700,000 units were transfused in 1992. To reach this general aim, five intermediary objectives have to be achieved: 1) The sentinel study of the methodology used to collect information about transfusion accidents, as well as their identification and their early clinical expression; 2) The analysis of the occurrence mechanisms of incompatib

BACKGROUND: Abdominal wall reconstruction requires extensive dissection of the abdominal wall, exposure of the retroperitoneum, and aggressive chemoprophylaxis to reduce the risk of thromboembolic complications. The need for early anticoagulation puts patients at risk for bleeding. We aimed to quantify postoperative blood loss, incidence of transfusion and reoperation, and associated risk factors in patients undergoing complex abdominal wall reconstruction.
METHODS: All patients underwent a posterior component separation with transversus abdominis release and placement of retromuscular mesh f

BACKGROUND: Noncompressible hemorrhage is the leading cause of potentially preventable battlefield death. Combining casualty retrieval from the battlefield and damage control resuscitation (DCR) within the "golden hour" increases survival. However, transfusion requirements may exceed the current blood component stocks held by forward surgical teams. Warm fresh whole blood (WFWB) is an alternative. We report WFWB transfusion training developed by and delivered to a US Golden Hour Offset Surgical Treatment Team and the resulting improvement in confidence with WFWB transfusion.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is an essential component of healthcare delivery but poses a risk of transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs), particularly in low- and middle-income countries where donor screening systems may be inadequate. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of major TTIs and assess their association with sociodemographic characteristics among blood donors at a tertiary care hospital in Lahore, Pakistan.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using blood donor records of 550 individuals. All donations were routinely screened for hepatitis B vi
