This research examined preferences for national- and campus-level assimilative and pluralistic policies among Black and White students under different contexts, as majority- and minority-group members. We targeted attitudes at two universities, one where 85% of the student body is White, and another where 76% of students are Black. BACKGROUND: Our purpose was to determine the relationship of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components with retinal microvascular abnormalities in a rural Chinese population.
METHODS: The Handan Eye Study, a population-based survey, recruited 6,830 (90.4 % of eligible) rural Chinese ≥30 years of age. A diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was based on the International Diabetes Federation definition. Retinal microvascular signs and arteriolar and venular diameters were assessed from fundus photographs by graders who were trained at the Retinal Vascular Imaging Centre, University of Melbourne.

Epidemiological data show an increased risk of HIV-associated lipodystrophy in women, and sex hormone abnormalities have been reported with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). This study, which demonstrates that oestrogen receptor beta expression is significantly reduced in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of HIV-infected lipodystrophic patients, downregulated by HAART regimens including protease inhibitors (PI), and restored after switching from PI, opens perspectives for the investigation of selective oestrogen receptor modifiers for the management of this syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Since the 1970s, incidence rates of esophageal and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma have risen substantially. Reasons for the increasing trends are not well understood.
METHODS: A population-based, case-control study that included esophageal adenocarcinomas (n = 222), gastric cardia adenocarcinomas (n = 277), distal gastric adenocarcinomas (n = 443), and 1356 controls was conducted in Los Angeles County. PURPOSE: To investigate the refractive status and factors associated with myopia by a population-based survey of Japanese adults.
METHODS: A total of 2168 subjects aged 40 to 79 years, randomly selected from a local community, were assessed in a cross-sectional study. The spherical equivalent of the refractive error was calculated and used in a multiple logistic regression analysis to evaluate the relationships between myopia and possible related factors.

The natural history of type 2 diabetes usually includes both insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction. Insulin secretion may compensate for insulin resistance. In a prospective, consecutive series, 41 total hip arthroplasties were performed in 27 small-proportioned patients with small femoral dimensions.
