Exact lattice summations for Lennard-Jones potentials coupled to a three-body Axilrod-Teller-Muto term applied to cuboidal phase transitions.

Three-body interactions have long been conjectured to play a crucial role in the stability of matter. However, rigorous studies have been scarce due to the computational challenge of evaluating small energy differences in high-dimensional lattice sums. This work provides a rigorous analysis of Bain-type cuboidal lattice transformations, which connect the face-centered cubic (fcc), mean-centered cubic (mcc), body-centered cubic (bcc), and axially centered cubic (acc) lattices. Our study incorporates a general (n, m) Lennard-Jones (LJ) two-body potential and a long-range repulsive Axilrod-Teller

An Unusual Case of Noncatamenial Recurrent Pneumothorax.

In a 28-year-old female, seven recurrent pneumothoraces occurred during a period of 2 years despite multiple thoracic interventions, all on the left thoracic side. Despite profound differential diagnostic analysis, the underlying cause remains unclear. An accumulation of conditions in this patient affecting only the left half of the body is remarkable: sinistral glaucoma as an infant, a sinistral pigmentation disorder, and a sinistral Bochdalek hernia.

Autopsing history: The mummy of Charlemagne (c. 747 - 814 AD), father of Europe.

In this article, a complete history of Charlemagne's mortal remains is outlined, including the first publication reporting on the most recent tomb opening in 1988. Besides exclusive bioarchaeological details - namely that his body was indeed mummified - a full clinical interpretation of the Emperor's final illnesses and death is given: a likely combination of osteoarthritis, gout and a recurrent fever caused by an infectious disease.

The ocular manifestations of congenital rubella syndrome.

Congenital Rubella affects the eye in many ways. Ocular effects can be found in the lens, retina, ciliary body and cornea. Ocular manifestations of the Congenital Rubella Syndrome are congenital cataracts, microphthalmos, pigmentary retinopathy, strabismus, and glaucoma. While surgical and medical treatment is utilized for these conditions, the need for prevention is considered critical. The responsibility of health care providers to educate the public remains the key.

Application of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis in Weight Management of Children with Spina Bifida.

BACKGROUND: Children with spina bifida (SB) face an elevated risk of obesity, which necessitates precise methods for assessing body composition to ensure effective weight management. Conventional measures like BMI are inadequate for this population because of variations in growth patterns and skeletal structure. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a method that offers a clearer picture of body composition, yet its use in children with SB remains underexplored. METHODS: Conducted on 57 children with SB and 28 healthy controls, with a median age of 11 years, this study evaluated anthropom

Distinct profile and prognostic impact of body composition changes in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and idiopathic pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis.

Change in body composition with skeletal muscle wasting, a major component of pulmonary cachexia, is associated with mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer. However, its relevance in interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) remains unclear. We hypothesized changes in body composition would be associated with mortality in ILDs. We measured the cross-sectional-area (ESMCSA) and muscle attenuation (ESMMA) of erector-spinae muscles, as determined by CT-imaging, in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF; n = 131) and idiopathic pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (iPPFE; n =

"What Are You Thinking When You Look at Me?" A Pilot Study of the Use of Virtual Reality in Body Image.

Body image disturbance (BID) is implicated in the etiology, maintenance, and relapse of the eating disorders, and remains challenging to treat. New paradigms such as virtual reality (VR) may offer an ecologically viable method to assess and treat BID. This pilot study aimed to determine if a VR environment could elicit increased BID in a nonclinical group of women who were dieting due to body image concerns or nonclinical women who were not dieting. Forty-one nonclinical females participated in the VR paradigm (a London Bus Journey), completing pre and post measures of body image satisfaction,

Low density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels affect vertebral fracture risk in female patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

Although increased arterial sclerosis and dyslipidemia were observed in primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) patients in previous studies, it still remains unclear about the relationships between lipid and bone metabolism in pHPT patients, especially about fracture risk. The present study was performed to examine the relationships between lipid metabolism parameters including body composition and bone metabolism in 116 female patients with pHPT and 116 age-matched control subjects. Bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition were measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Serum low densit

Ascorbic acid regeneration by bovine iris-ciliary body.

Ocular tissues appear to require high levels of ascorbic acid and the elucidation of the mechanisms by which those tissues maintain the vitamin in its reduced state remains an important objective. The regeneration of ascorbate from its oxidative by-product, dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA), was studied in bovine iris-ciliary body. Iris-ciliary body was removed by scalpel, weighed, minced, and homogenized in 20 mM MOPS, 62 mM sucrose, and 0.1 mM EDTA at pH 7.0. The homogenate was centrifuged and precipitated with ammonium sulfate such that maximal DHAA reducing activity was enhanced in a 50-75% ammo

Development and germination of the Azotobacter cyst.

The fine structure of Azotobacter vinelandii has been studied by means of electron microscopy of ultrathin sections made of the encysting and germinating cells. The organisms were fixed with KMnO(4) and embedded in epoxy resin. On an encystment medium the rod-shaped bacteria begin to assume an almost spherical form and then bark-like exine appears in 1(1/2) to 2 days. The exine thickens and an electron permeable intine forms between it and the shrinking cell body. In 5 days the intine makes up more than half of the cyst volume and begins to show a definite two-layered structure. Meanwhile the

Valley-Controlled Many-Body Exciton Interactions in Monolayer WSe2 Phototransistors.

Many-body exciton interactions shape the optoelectronic response of atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides, yet optical control of these interactions remains largely unexplored. To date, modulation of exciton-exciton interactions has primarily relied on electrical gating or van der Waals engineering. Here, we demonstrate all-optical control of many-body exciton interactions in monolayer WSe2 via valley-selective excitation using polarization-resolved pulsed-laser photocurrent spectroscopy. Circular excitation selectively populates excitons in a single valley, whereas linear excitatio

Kinematic Strategies of Dragonfly Free-Fall Recovery from an Asymmetric Body Roll.

Insect aerial righting is a critical locomotor response to flight perturbations. However, the kinematic strategy of dragonfly (Pantala flavescens) free-fall recovery under asymmetric perturbations remains unclear. In this study, free-fall experiments were conducted using single-wing release to induce an initial asymmetric body roll, and three-dimensional kinematics were reconstructed using high-speed videography. The results show that the free-fall recovery process was divided into two phases based on body velocity: a free-fall phase with increasing downward velocity and a recovery phase marke

Associations of thigh muscle thickness with cardiorespiratory fitness and ventilatory efficiency in male soccer athletes.

Skeletal muscle is crucial for locomotion, metabolic health and represents a substantial portion of the whole body-body mass in athletes. Muscle ultrasound (MUS) has been reported as a reliable and potential method in the quantification of regional skeletal muscles. While previous research has shown a relationship between MUS evaluations and skeletal muscle strength the relationship between thigh muscle thickness and cardio-respiratory capacity evaluated by cardio-respiratory exercise testing (CPET) remains un-explored. In competitive soccer male athletes, body composition parameters, rectus f

Positive body image is a pathway between nature contact and life satisfaction across 58 nations.

Time spent in nature benefits human mental and physical well-being. However, much of the variance in outcomes of nature contact remains unexplained, suggesting that new mechanistic pathways need to be considered. Here, we tested a novel conceptual model linking nature contact with life satisfaction via pathways involving positive experiences of living in and experiencing the world through the physical self. Using data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS; N = 50,363), representing respondents from 58 nations and speaking 36 different languages, we find that nature contact is associated w

Association between ketone body levels and chronic liver disease: Epidemiological studies and potential mechanisms.

Chronic liver disease encompasses conditions such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, and chronic viral hepatitis, being a major cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Ketone bodies, crucial hepatic energy substrates, may serve as biomarkers in CLD progression. This review investigated the association between chronic liver diseases and ketone body levels. Studies indicate that ketone body levels may serve as biomarkers for chronic liver diseases. Patients with metabolic dysfuncti

Chemoradiotherapy for Inoperable Carotid Body Leiomyosarcoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Vascular leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare tumor and is associated with poor prognosis among leiomyosarcoma. Surgical resection remains the main treatment option. But outcome of definitive treatment with chemoradiotherapy in inoperable patients is not clear. Here, we report treatment and outcome of definitive chemoradiotherapy in a case of vascular leiomyosarcoma. A 64-year-old man with the initial presentation of pulsatile right neck mass was diagnosed with right carotid body leiomyosarcoma. He refused surgical intervention due to risk of carotid body injury and ischemic stroke. Successful

Beneficial effects of kinin B1 receptor antagonism on plasma fatty acid alterations and obesity in Zucker diabetic fatty rats.

Kinins are the endogenous ligands of the constitutive B2 receptor (B2R) and the inducible B1 receptor (B1R). Whereas B2R prevents insulin resistance, B1R is involved in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. However, the contribution of B1R in type 2 diabetes associated with obesity remains uncertain. The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of 1-week treatment with a selective B1R antagonist (SSR240612, 10 mg/kg per day, by gavage) on hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, leptinemia, body mass gain, and abnormal plasma fatty acids in obese Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats.
