Study of urinary excretion of butobarbitone in man in relation to the percentage of ideal body weight.

1 Thirty-three patients with no evidence of endocrine disease, hepatic or renal insufficiency or sleep disorders, were classified in groups 1 to 4 in order of increasing of percentage of ideal body weight (IBW) respectively: less than 90% of IBW, 90--120%, 120--180%, and greater than 180% of IBW. After oral administration of 200 mg butobarbitone, concentration of the intact drug was measured by gas liquid chromatographic assay in urine samples collected during 72 h and at three times in blood. 2 A highly significant negative relationship was found between the cumulative excretion of butobarbit…

Body weight and the pituitary response to hypothalamic releasing hormones in patients with anorexia nervosa.

Fifteen women with anorexia nervosa were studied before and after weight gain. Basal plasma thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and prolactin (PRL), and the responses of both these hormones to thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), were normal. Basal plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were low in patients who were emaciated, and their responses to gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) were impaired. Both basal and stimulated levels of LH and FSH rose with weight gain, with a linear correlation between gonadotropin levels and body weight expressed as a percentage…

Body-weight variation as a potential indirect indicator of abdominal fat weight with relevance to laying rate in 90-week-old laying hens.

In livestock species, efficient regulation of body lipid reserves contributes to prolonged reproductive performance, as shown in dairy cattle and more recently in laying hens through abdominal fat reserves. Controlling abdominal fat weight (AFW) at 90 weeks may improve metabolic efficiency and late egg production. However, AFW measurement requires slaughter and dissection, preventing routine use. This study therefore evaluated the genetic relationship between adult body-weight variation (∆BW) and AFW, and the potential of ∆BW as a non-invasive indirect indicator of AFW in aging hens. Genetic p

A Low-Protein High-Fat Diet Leads to Loss of Body Weight and White Adipose Tissue Weight via Enhancing Energy Expenditure in Mice.

Obesity has become a worldwide health problem over the past three decades. During obesity, metabolic dysfunction of white adipose tissue (WA … mass, inducing browning of WAT. In order to determine whether an LPHF, along with exercise enhanced body weight loss and body fat loss as well as the synergistic effect of an LPHF and exercise on energy expenditure in a mice model, we combined a 10-week LPHF with an 8-week forced treadmill training. Meanwhile, a traditional high-fat diet (HPHF) containing the …

Effect of acupuncture on asthma control and body weight changes in obese patients with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Chronic persistent asthma is difficult to control and is often comorbid with obesity. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce airway inflammation and improve lung function, and it may also help regulate body weight to some extent. Currently, obesity combined with chronic persistent asthma is a research hotspot, but interventional studies involving acupuncture remain relatively limited. This study aims to fill this gap. METHODS: Patients were divided into a control group (conventional western medical treatment) and a treatment group (conventional western medical treatment plus acupunc…

Meibography of the Upper Eyelids in Cats. Correlations With Age, Body Weight and Tear Parameters.

Meibomian glands are responsible for the production and secretion of lipids into the precorneal tear film, which limits its evaporation. This study aimed to evaluate the percentage of Meibomian gland loss rate (MGLR) in the upper eyelid of cats of different ages assessed by infrared meibography. Additionally, possible correlations between MGLR and age, body weight and tear tests were assessed. Three groups were formed according to age: from 6 months to 2 years (Group A, n = 14), from 2 to 3 years (Group B, n = 15), and from 3 to 6 years (Group C, n = 13). Schirmer tear test (STT-1), tear film …

The association of different body weight classes and survival outcomes in patients with cervical cancer.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between different weight class and mortality risk remained uncertain in cervical cancer patients. Thus, we conducted the study to assess the association between different body weight classes and survival outcomes in patients with cervical cancer. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study including 6908 cervical cancer patients from the Taiwan Cancer Registry database. A COX regression model was used to evaluate the relationship between different weight classes and time-to-event outcomes of overall survival and cancer-specific survival at three years. RESULTS…

The impact of a ketogenic diet on weight loss, metabolism, body composition and quality of life.

A ketogenic diet (KD) is increasingly debated as a countermeasure against nutrition-related modern diseases. While being immunologically beneficial, KD is still suspected of having severe metabolic side effects and negatively impacting general well-being, which prevents its widespread clinical use. We conducted a prospective pre-post interventional study investigating the effects of an eucaloric KD on metabolism, weight loss, body composition, diet adherence, and quality of life. The study had two stages: first, feasibility was tested in healthy, normal-weight participants over three weeks. Af

Impact of radiotherapy on body weight in head and neck cancer patients: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy often experience symptoms that affect their ability to eat. This study aimed to explore the impact of radiotherapy on body weight in HNC patients and compare the characteristics of patients receiving enteral tube feeding with those maintaining an oral diet. METHODS: In this prospective study, 52 patients with HNC were examined at diagnosis, at the start and end of radiotherapy, and six weeks after end of treatment. The nutritional assessment included measurements of body weight, food intake, and …

Alterations in Body Weight and Composition in Patients With Graves' Disease Treated with Total Thyroidectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Thyrotoxicosis causes excess energy expenditure, resulting in weight loss, despite increased appetite, and changes in body composition, which are typically reversible with the normalization of thyroid hormone levels. However, patients with hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease are sometimes hesitant to undergo treatment because of the perceived morbidity associated with weight gain. Therefore, obtaining data to explain the details of such weight gain to these patients is important. This study aimed to investigate changes in body weight and composition in patients with Graves' disea…

The transmission line foreign body detection algorithm based on weighted spatial attention.

INTRODUCTION: The secure operation of electric power transmission lines is essential for the economy and society. However, external factors such as plastic film and kites can cause damage to the lines, potentially leading to power outages. Traditional detection methods are inefficient, and the accuracy of automated systems is limited in complex background environments. METHODS: This paper introduces a Weighted Spatial Attention (WSA) network model to address the low accuracy in identifying extraneous materials within electrical transmission infrastructure due to background texture occlusion.

Differences in the Active Endometrial Microbiota across Body Weight and Cancer in Humans and Mice.

Obesity is a risk factor for endometrial cancer. The aim of this study was to determine whether actively replicating microbiota in the endometrium differ between obese vs. lean and cancer vs. benign states. We performed 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing on endometrial tissues from lean and obese women with and without endometrial cancer, and lean and obese mice. Results displayed human endometrial microbiota clustered into three community types (R = 0.363, p = 0.001). Lactobacillus was dominant in community type 1 (C1) while community type 2 (C2) had high levels of Proteobacteria and more cancer sa

Effect of Body Weight on Age at Onset in Huntington Disease: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

OBJECTIVE: Weight loss is associated with clinical progression in Huntington disease (HD), but whether body weight causally affects disease onset or progression is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to assess whether genetically determined variations in body weight are causally related to age at onset in HD. METHODS: Using data from different recent genome-wide association studies, we performed a 2-sample mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to assess whether genetic markers of body mass index (BMI) are causally related to residual age at onset in HD, i.e., the difference between observed and expe…
