In this review the authors focus on abnormal brain magnetic resonance imaging caused by drugs given to patients in any age group for any disease. The review includes viral infections with fever in children/infections in general, epilepsy, psychiatric diseases, multiple sclerosis, neoplasms, bone marrow/organ transplantations, total parenteral nutrition, vaccinations, oral contraceptives and other prothrombotic drugs, and gadolinium deposition. Knowledge of patients' diseases and medications they receive is crucial to establish the correct diagnosis. The absence of these data in a referral for

A 58-year-old man presented with painful edema of the extremities, and a diagnosis of eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) was confirmed. He also met the criteria for hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES), but there were no findings suggestive of malignancies or hematologic neoplasms despite a close examination. He was started on steroid therapy but subsequently developed severe liver dysfunction, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, hepatosplenomegaly, and renal involvement. The diagnosis of peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified was finally established by a bone marrow reexamination and liver

Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders are a spectrum of lymphoproliferative disorders seen in recipients of solid-organ, bone marrow, and stem cell allografts. They include polyclonal early lesions mimicking infectious mononucleosis and monoclonal proliferations of B and T cells, indistinguishable from lymphomas occurring in immunocompetent individuals. Although most posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders are B-cell neoplasms, T-cell posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders are very rare. Among solid-organ transplants, renal allografts have low risk for development of posttran

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS).
PATIENT MATERIAL: The patient was a 41-year-old man with a lymph node bulging in the left neck. Laboratory examination of peripheral blood and bone marrow was abnormal. The diagnosis of IDCS was made by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Treatment of this patient with ABVD regimen (adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine) resulted in obvious improvement, but did not control the tumor infiltration.
CONCLUSION: IDCS has no distinctive clinical or pathohistological characteristics. Immunohistochemis

Calcific tendinitis with intraosseous migration represents a diagnostic pitfall that frequently simulates aggressive bone neoplasms on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), potentially triggering unnecessary oncologic workup. The authors report the case of a 26-year-old woman on immunosuppressive therapy presenting with acute, debilitating left shoulder pain. Initial MRI demonstrated a permeative-appearing process of the proximal humeral metaphysis with extensive bone marrow edema and cortical erosion, prompting a referral to orthopedic oncology. Subsequent multimodality correlation and computed t

BACKGROUND: Subdural osteomas are benign neoplasms that are rarely encountered. We report the case of a 64‑year‑old female patient with a left temporal subdural osteoma.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient presented with intermittent dizziness that first began two years earlier. Non-contrast computed tomography revealed a densely calcified left temporal extra-axial mass. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lesion revealed signal loss on T1-weighted and T2-weighted images and non-enhancement on Gadolinium enhanced T1-weighted images, and diffusion-weighted and ADC images demonstrated reduced values at

We encountered a case of a 59-year-old female who simultaneously contracted a non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and a plasma cell neoplasm. The patient consulted her physician about her abdominal tumor and anemia in March 1999. She was diagnosed as having NHL (follicular center lymphoma, grade I, stage IIA) after an open tumor biopsy, and treated by cycles of CHOP chemotherapy which resulted in complete remission. However, the patient's abdominal tumor appeared again in March 2000 and she was hospitalized at the Ehime University Hospital. A tumor biopsy was performed laparoscopically at that time. Fo

BCR::ABL1-like B-lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-ALL) neoplasms lack the BCR::ABL1 translocation but have a gene expression profile like BCR::ABL1 positive B-ALL. This includes alterations in cytokine receptors and signalling genes, such as CRLF2, ABL1, ABL2, JAK2, PDGFRB and EPOR Cases with CRLF2 rearrangements account for approximately 50% of cases of Philadelphia-like acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (Ph-like ALL), and the frequency of specific genomic lesions varies with ethnicity such that IGH::CRLF2 translocations are more common in Hispanics and Native Americans. We report two cases of BCR::ABL1

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is more aggressive when compared with other lymphomas composed of small, mature B lymphocytes. Cyclin D1 is overexpressed in MCL as a result of the translocation t(11;14)(q13;q32). Cyclin D1 immunohistochemistry in fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue contributes to the precise and reproducible diagnosis of MCL without the requirement of fresh tissue. However, its use in bone marrow biopsies is not well established. In addition, increased levels of cyclin D1 mRNA have been found in hairy cell leukemia but have not consistently been detected by immunohistochemistry. We use

With the advent of precision genomics, hereditary predisposition to hematopoietic neoplasms- collectively known as hereditary predisposition syndromes (HPS)-are being increasingly recognized in clinical practice. Familial clustering was first observed in patients with leukemia, which led to the identification of several germline variants, such as RUNX1, CEBPA, GATA2, ANKRD26, DDX41, and ETV6, among others, now established as HPS, with tendency to develop myeloid neoplasms. However, evidence for hereditary predisposition is also apparent in lymphoid and plasma--cell neoplasms, with recent disco

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare hematological malignancy that may be associated with myelodysplastic or myeloproliferative neoplasms. Herein, we report a case of transformation from myelofibrosis to MS.
CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old male patient was found to have multiple bone lesions by the pelvic magnetic resonance imaging. Pathological analysis of the lesions indicated a myeloid tumor, and immunohistochemistry revealed a TP53 mutation. Bone marrow aspiration was consistent with myelofibrosis. Based on the patient's history of polycythemia and the immunohistochemical findings of th

BACKGROUND: The authors report the immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and cytogenetic findings in a case of malignant histiocytic proliferation in an infant.
PROCEDURE: The patient presented initially with bone lesions without skin or systemic involvement. Multiple biopsies were studied extensively by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Cytogenetic studies of cell cultures supplemented with granulocyte-monocyte colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) were also performed.
RESULTS: Morphologically, the cells resembled Langerhans cells, although with greater pleomorphism, as evinced by

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm with raised granulocyte cell line. It arises in the hematopoietic stem cell and is characterized by the presence of BCR-ABL fusion gene as a result of translocation between chromosomes t(9,22) (q34; q11.2). CML affects bone marrow and peripheral blood. CML can be asymptomatic and is usually discovered on routine blood investigations. It can also present as symptoms associated with anemia and splenomegaly. Rarely do CML patients present with retinal abnormalities as an initial presentation. We cover a case of CML in this report tha

Malignant histiocytosis is a rare neoplasm of the reticuloendothelial system characterized by neoplastic proliferation of tissue histiocytes. We report a case of malignant histiocytosis in a 64-year-old female initially operated on for a mucinous cystadenoma of her liver. Four months after the operation, skin induration on the neck and anterior thoracic wall and systemic lymphadenopathy were noted. Histology and immunohistochemistry of the lymph node and bone marrow specimens showed extensive infiltration with atypical cells, resembling malignant histiocytes (CD45, CD45RO, CD11c, CD68, lysozym

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a chronic Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasm that has its main involvement in the megakaryopoietic lineage, generating sustained thrombocytosis in peripheral blood and an increase in the number of mature megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. In addition to marked thrombocytosis, it is characterized by increased thrombotic or hemorrhagic risk and the presence of constitutional symptoms. Patients with ET have a low but known risk of disease progression to myelofibrosis and/or acute leukemia. The diagnosis is made based on the 2016 WHO criteria. At pr

Mastocytosis is a disease resulting from a proliferation of clonal, abnormal mast cells in tissues and organs, defined as Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasm. We present a male patient with clinically, morphologically and immunohistochemically confirmed mastocytosis with preceding myelodysplastic syndrome, occurred after wasp bite in the course of anaphylactic reaction. The propensity to hymenoptera venom-induced anaphylaxis and the presence of an increased population of atypical mast cells in bone marrow found after anaphylactic shock may suggest the possible relationship betwee

A case of erythroleukemia (EL) associated with monosomy 7 is reported. The EL was diagnosed 20 months after the initial diagnosis of monosomy 7 was made. An immunologic study of the blast cells using a monoclonal antibody was positive for glycophorin A, which suggested that they were of erythroid origin; this was confirmed by electron microscopy. Chemotherapy was started with low dose cytarabine. However, the patient had severe bone marrow suppression and died of pneumonia. Our case shows that monosomy 7 is an abnormality of the pluripotential stem cells, including erythroid cells, that result

A 77‒year‒old man came to our hospital with complaints of abdominal pain and difficulty to defecate. Abdominal CT scan showed an abnormal region in the ascending colon, which was suspected to be an ascending colon cancer. D‒dimer was remarkably high, and the platelet count was 63,000/μL; these results suggested disseminated intravascular coagulation caused by tumor activation. After he was admitted, we performed a contrast enhanced CT, and found no signs of remote metastasis. We decided to resect the tumor without colonoscopy examination in order to release the DIC state. After the surgery, th

OBJECTIVES: Detecting circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in the peripheral blood and disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) in the bone marrow of cancer patients has proven feasible and of prognostic value in different neoplasms. However, the clinical significance of CTCs and DTCs in ovarian cancer and its association with outcome remains unclear.
METHODS: A literature search in PubMed was performed from January 2000 to December 2013 for studies evaluating CTCs and/or DTCs and its association with clinicopathological characteristics and clinical outcome in ovarian cancer. The main outcome measures were
