Mesoderm-specific expression of the divergent homeobox gene Hlx during murine embryogenesis.

We have determined the expression pattern of the divergent homeobox gene Hlx during post-implantation mouse development, utilizing in situ hybridization. Expression was mesoderm-specific and occurred in a complex tissue distribution. Transcripts were first detected at 9.5 days post coitum (p.c.) in splanchnic mesoderm of the midgut and hindgut region, then during organogenesis, prominently in mesenchyme of the developing liver, gall bladder, and intestines, as well as their mesenteric tissues. In the foregut, lung mesenchyme became positive from 10.5 days p.c. Hlx transcripts were also detecte

First Case Report of Agnathia-Otocephaly Complex Reported in Niger.

Agnathia-otocephaly complex (AOC) is an extremely rare congenital malformation resulting from a disorder of the first branchial arch. In the past, this condition was considered lethal. However, milder variants of the isolated type of AOC have been reported as non-lethal. The condition is characterized by hypoplasia or the absence of the mandible (micrognathia/agnathia), variable displacement of the ears (melotia) with or without auricular fusion (synotia), and a small oral aperture or absence of mouth (microstomia/astomia), with or without tongue hypoplasia or absence (aglossia). AOC can occur

Distribution of C cells in the thyroid gland with pyriform sinus fistula.

A pyriform sinus fistula can cause acute thyroiditis or recurrent infection in the neck. This fistula is believed to be a remnant of the branchial apparatus, although its origin has yet to be pinpointed. The spatial distribution of C cells in the thyroid gland was mapped by immunohistologic method in four patients with a pyriform sinus fistula. The C cells were identified immunohistologically with anticalcitonin antibody. The stained calcitonin-positive cells also crossreacted with the antibodies to carcinoembryonic antigen, chromogranin A, and neuron-specific enolase. The C cells were mainly

Cavernous Lymphangioma of the Neck: An Extraordinary Case.

Cervical lymphangioma is a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system that shows a predilection for the head and neck regions. They are most common in children between the ages of three and five and are rarely present in adults. While over 90% of lymphatic malformations are congenital, they can also manifest later due to factors such as trauma, infection, tumors, or medical procedures. They are often asymptomatic, but symptoms, if present, vary depending on the location of the tumor. Imaging techniques such as ultrasonography and computed tomography can aid in accurately mapping the exten

Surgical Management of an Intrathoracic Branchial Cyst in a Yellow-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea).

A 40-year-old, female lesser crested cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea) was presented with a complaint of hyporexia and sudden onset of sneezing and wheezing. Physical examination revealed mild stertorous inhalation, and the apex of the heart was palpable caudoventral to the distal tip of the sternum. Projection radiographic images showed a soft tissue mass displacing the heart and the thoracic portion of the trachea. A subsequent computed tomography series revealed a single, large, and predominantly encapsulated soft-tissue mass. The mass was contained within the cranial thoracic region and occupie

Dynamic expression of TSC-22 at sites of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during mouse development.

The leucine zipper transcription factor TSC-22 (TGF-beta1 Stimulated Clone-22) was first isolated from a mouse osteoblast cell line as an immediate-early target gene of TGF-beta1. However, work with other cell lines, as well as with a Drosophila homolog, bunched, suggests that it is an effector gene of various growth factors and potentially involved in the integration of multiple extracellular signals. Throughout mouse embryogenesis TSC-22 is expressed in a dynamic pattern. Although early TSC-22 expression is ubiquitous in 6.5 day embryos, as development proceeds TSC-22 expression is upregulat

Severity of birth defects after propylthiouracil exposure in early pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Propylthiouracil (PTU) used in the treatment of maternal hyperthyroidism in early pregnancy may be associated with a higher prevalence of birth defects in the face and neck region and in the urinary system but the severity of these complications remains to be elucidated. METHODS: Review of hospital-registered cases of birth defects in the face and neck region and in the urinary system after PTU exposure in early pregnancy. We obtained information on maternal redeemed prescription of PTU and child diagnosis of birth defect from nationwide registers for all children born in Denmark

[Use of Airwayscope with pediatric intlock in a patient with first and second branchial arch syndrome].

First and second branchial arch syndrome is a congenital anomaly of craniofacial dysplasia involving organs derived from the second branchial arch. The main characteristics are microtia and mandibular hypoplasia. A 6-year-old boy was scheduled for adenoidectomy and bilateral myringotomy and tube placement. Slow induction was performed with oxygen, nitrous oxide, and sevoflurane. No difficulties were encountered during mask ventilation, and rocuronium was administered intravenously. His epiglottis was not visible during laryngoscopy. Therefore, we used the Airwayscope (AWS). His glottis was vis

Management of congenital fourth branchial arch anomalies: a review and analysis of published cases.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Congenital fourth branchial arch anomalies are uncommon entities, heretofore described only in case reports, affecting primarily children, and typically presenting as a cervical inflammatory process. The aim of the study was to collect appropriate data on the diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of this condition and to suggest guidelines for its management. METHODS: We conducted a structured review of the literature for cases explicitly identified as congenital fourth branchial arch anomalies or meeting anatomical criteria for this condition. We computed descriptive statisti

The craniofacial surgeon as amateur geneticist.

Craniofacial surgeons, by nature and training, focus on how to correct anomalies rather than on why they occur. Surgeons often leave diagnosis and etiopathogenic speculation to geneticists. Craniofacial surgeons should cross over the specialty line and learn to think like geneticists. This article reviews definitions of basic words in the genetic language and emphasizes the three diagnostic levels, phenotypic, pathogenic, and genetic, for the principal categories of craniofacial anomalies. Whenever possible, examples are given to illustrate how genetic knowledge can influence surgical strategy

Familial hemifacial microsomia due to autosomal dominant inheritance. Case reports.

Hemifacial microsomia is a rare dentofacial anomaly which is regarded as a separate entity to Goldenhar syndrome and primarily affects the structures of the first branchial arch. It has a heterogeneous aetiology and tends to occur sporadically, though positive family histories have been reported. This paper reports on individuals in two generations of a family that has overlapping features of hemifacial microsomia and Goldenhar syndrome segregating as an autosomal dominant condition.

[Results of using autologous and demineralized allogeneic bone transplants in reconstructive operations on the mandible in children with the syndrome of the first and second branchial arches].

A comparative clinico-roentgenological assessment of results of transplantation of auto- and allogenic demineralized transplants in reconstructive operations on the mandible was made in 58 children with the syndrome of the first and second branchial arches aged from 1 to 14 years. It was found that the substitution of the transplants by a new bone tissue was developing similarly. Allogenic bone transplants have a number of advantages over autotransplants: a simpler treatment and modelling the absence of an additional trauma to the child and a shorter duration of the operation.

The diagnostic value of transfistular contrast-enhanced ultrasound in branchial cleft fistulas.

AIMS: This study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of transfistular contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for branchial cleft fistulas (BCF), using surgical findings as the reference standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty - six patients were initially suspected of having BCF. Among them, 35 patients who underwent two-dimensional ultrasound (2D-US), transfistular CEUS, and prior to surgery were retrospectively enrolled. The diagnostic accuracy of transfistular CEUS and 2D-US for BCF detection was compared. The agreement between CEUS and surgical findings in internal orifice localization and B

Surgical treatment of first branchial cleft anomalies using retrograde facial nerve dissection technique.

PURPOSE: First branchial cleft anomalies (FBCAs) are infrequent congenital malformations. In FBCAs removal surgery, due to the previous infection history and the anatomical proximity of the FBCAs tract to the facial nerve, postoperative recurrence and facial paralysis are not uncommon. This study aimed to assess the clinical feasibility and outcomes of FBCAs resection using the retrograde facial nerve dissection technique. METHODS: This retrospective study included 19 patients (mean age, 6.3 ± 4.4 years) who underwent FBCAs excision via retrograde facial nerve dissection between 2017 and 2023

GATA3 is essential for separating patterning domains during facial morphogenesis.

Neural crest cells (NCCs) within the mandibular and maxillary prominences of the first pharyngeal arch are initially competent to respond to signals from either region. However, mechanisms that are only partially understood establish developmental tissue boundaries to ensure spatially correct patterning. In the 'hinge and caps' model of facial development, signals from both ventral prominences (the caps) pattern the adjacent tissues whereas the intervening region, referred to as the maxillomandibular junction (the hinge), maintains separation of the mandibular and maxillary domains. One cap si

Branchiootic syndrome--a clinical case report and review of the literature.

Branchiootoic syndrome is part of the spectrum of brachiootorenal disorders. Brachiootorenal disorder is a rare autosomal dominant condition, characterized by malformations of the outer, middle, and inner ear, which are associated with branchial and renal anomalies. We describe a case of bilateral branchiootoic syndrome and discuss the anatomy of second branchial cleft fistulae and the surgical management of this uncommon condition. We report the case of a 6-year-old girl referred to our department with bilateral intermittently discharging neck swellings. Clinical examination revealed bilatera

First branchial arch fistula: diagnostic dilemma and improvised surgical management.

First branchial cleft anomalies are uncommon, and only sporadic case reports are published in the literature. They account for 1% to 8% of all the branchial abnormalities. The often variable presentation and tract siting of first arch fistulae have led to misdiagnosis. The misdiagnosis results in inappropriate/ineffective treatment and recurrence of the sinus tract. We present a 19-year-old woman who presented to the ENT outpatient department with episodic discharge from a long-standing fistula anterior to the left sternomastoid muscle. This was associated with repeated episodes of ipsilateral

The zinc finger transcriptional repressor Blimp1/Prdm1 is dispensable for early axis formation but is required for specification of primordial germ cells in the mouse.

Blimp1, a zinc-finger containing DNA-binding transcriptional repressor, functions as a master regulator of B cell terminal differentiation. Considerable evidence suggests that Blimp1 is required for the establishment of anteroposterior axis formation and the formation of head structures during early vertebrate development. In mouse embryos, Blimp1 is strongly expressed in axial mesendoderm, the tissue known to provide anterior patterning signals during gastrulation. Here, we describe for the first time the defects caused by loss of Blimp1 function in the mouse. Blimp1 deficient embryos die at
