Retroperitoneal foregut cyst.

A foregut cyst is formed as a result of abnormal budding and pinching of the tracheobronchial tree when bronchial buds develop to form the primitive respiratory tree. Foregut cysts are clinically classified as bronchogenic, esophageal, enterogastric, or ciliated hepatic. We present a foregut cyst that occurred in the retroperitoneum and was difficult to distinguish from other retroperitoneal cystic mass lesions. Magnetic resonance imaging was useful in revealing the cyst's continuity to adjacent organs.

Spot the trachea! A wide paratracheal air cyst of not easy definition.

We report a case of a 68-year-old woman with an occasional image of a wide paratracheal oval air cyst of not easy definition. Patient had never received a chest X-ray and she had never suffered from symptoms that needed to investigate the trachea or the neck. The diagnostic hypothesis was a wide tracheal diverticulum or a bronchogenic cyst.

Branchial cleft heterotopia of the lower neck.

A cutaneous ciliated structure from the lower neck of a 61-year-old man having seromucous, sebaceous and respiratory-type differentiation is reported. The finding of continuity between endodermal and ectodermal structures in the reported lesion suggests an origin from the branchial apparatus. Many lesions with similar appearance have been labeled bronchogenic though these, in fact, may have branchial origins. The term cutaneous bronchogenic cyst, implying an origin from the tracheobronchial tree, maybe misleading and should be reconsidered for those lesions with respiratory-type differentiatio…

Mullerian cysts of the posterior mediastinum: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Cystic lesions can be occasionally be found in the mediastinum, and typically include bronchogenic cysts, esophageal duplication cysts, and neuroenteric cysts. In 2005, Hattori described the first mediastinal cyst with Mullerian differentiation. Since that time, three other authors have described similar cysts occurring in the posterior mediastinum. Here we present two cases of patients with ciliated cysts with Mullerian differentiation with expression of estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, PAX8 and Wilm's tumor 1, occurring in the posterior mediastinum and review the related literature.

Solitary intrapulmonary cystic lymphangioma in an infant: a case report with literature review.

Lymphangioma rarely presents as a solitary pulmonary lesion. We encountered a case of solitary cystic lymphangioma and present its clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical findings. A 2-month-old boy was referred to the hospital after developing a persistent cough. Chest X-ray showed a large cyst in the right lung. Under the preoperative diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst, he underwent right lower lobectomy at the age of 11 months. The resected specimen contained a 5.5-cm septate cystic lesion. Microscopically, the lesion consisted of a large cystic space and interconnected slit-like spaces surro…

Subcutaneous bronchogenic anomalies.

Two cases of congenital anomalies, one cyst and one sinus, presenting in the suprasternal notch are reported. No communication with deeper structures was found at surgery, and histology was compatible with previous descriptions of subcutaneous bronchogenic cysts. The literature is reviewed, and the similarity between these lesions and many cases of branchial fistula is stressed.

Congenital Cystic Lung Lesions: An Update on Clinical and Pathologic Correlates.

"Cystic" lung lesions that arise in utero or early postnatal life encompass congenital pulmonary airway malformations, sequestrations, pleuropulmonary blastoma, and bronchogenic cyst, but this category also includes noncystic lesions such as lobar emphysema and rare fetal neoplasms. Traditional classifications have heavily weighted cyst size as a defining feature. In this review, we emphasize the significance of the etiology in defining categories and driving patient care.

Ruptured intrathoracic cyst during induction of anaesthesia: Anaesthetic challenges.

Congenital benign cysts are among the rare types of mediastinal masses. When symptomatic, complete surgical excision through thoracotomy is the definitive treatment. Rarely they may present with symptoms due to complications like rupture. However, rupture following the induction of general anaesthesia poses unique challenges for anaesthesiologist. We report our experience of a rare variant of intraparenchymal cyst (lung), which was subsequently found to be a bronchogenic cyst.

Hydatid cyst: an unusual etiology for a cystic lesion of the posterior mediastinum.

The cystic lesions of the posterior mediastinum include bronchogenic, enteric and intramural esophageal cysts, lymphangioma, and anterior meningocele. Hydatid cysts are usually located in the liver, lung, and brain. Although many uncommon locations have been reported, hydatid cyst has not previously been encountered as an isolated posterior mediastinal lesion. A 4-year-old boy with a posterior mediastinal cystic lesion, which has been proven to be a hydatid cyst, is reported.

A diaphragmatic retroperitoneal cyst.

Diaphragmatic lesions are usually congenital bronchogenic cysts. A patient with a known diaphragmatic cyst presented with new onset right upper quadrant pain. Repeat imaging showed enlargement of the cyst, the CA19-9 cancer marker was raised at 312 iu/ml (normal: <27 iu/ml) and positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography showed focally increased uptake in the cystic wall. In view of symptoms and risk of neoplasia, the lesion was excised. Histology showed a benign epidermoid cyst. Features falsely suggesting neoplasia have been reported previously with benign splenic cysts bu…

Laryngeal duplication cyst.

Benign congenital laryngeal cysts are rare. Infants and children with these lesions can present with chronic or intermittent airway obstructive symptoms, hoarseness, aspiration, chronic cough, or failure to thrive. The most common congenital laryngeal cysts include saccular cysts, laryngoceles, and ductal cysts. Other more unusual laryngeal lesions, such as hamartomas, choristomas, and teratomas, can also present with these symptoms. We describe a unique congenital cyst that arose in continuity with the larynx in a child with hoarseness and intermittent stridor. The features of this lesion are

Azygos vein varix mimicking bronchial cysts.

Azygos vein varix is a very rare disease associated with a risk of rupture or thrombosis. Here, we report a case of azygos vein varix mimicking bronchogenic cysts. A 79-year-old female patient presented with abnormal shadows on a chest X-ray during an annual check-up. A plain chest computed tomography (CT) showed a well-defined tumour, approximately 66 X 65 X 45 mm in size, behind the trachea. An enhanced CT scan was refused due to asthma complications. A high signal on T2W1 images from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated a cystic tumour. Diagnosed as a bronchogenic cyst, a cyst excisio…

[Characteristics and complications of mediastinal brochogenic cysts. A report on five cases (author's transl)].

Five observations of mediastinal brochogenic cysts are used to illustrate the diagnostic and/or therapeutic difficulties encountered in cases with an ectopic topography or complications. In two cases, one of which was clearly located in the posterior mediastinum and associated with a false erosive appearance of the nearby vertebral body, it was possible to establish the degree of ectopic displacement of the bronchogenic cysts, and to comprehend the pre-operative diagnostic difficulties and nosological problems associated with these sequestrations. As far as complications are concerned, one obs…

Ciliated cells in abdominal or pelvic fine needle aspirations: a case report and review of the literature.

Ciliated cells encountered outside of an expected anatomical location (e.g., the respiratory tract, fallopian tube, etc) can represent a diagnostic difficulty for the cytopathologist, especially during preliminary assessment of a fine needle aspiration (FNA) for adequacy or malignancy. We present the cytologic and histologic features of a FNA and needle core biopsy, respectively, of an abdominal mass, likely from a gastrointestinal duplication cyst, foregut cyst or a bronchogenic cyst. We also briefly review the differential diagnosis for ciliated cells encountered in abdominal or pelvic FNAs.

Congenital intrathoracic bronchopulmonary foregut malformations in childhood.

Bronchopulmonary foregut malformations (BPFM) are a group of related disorders. They include tracheoesophageal fistula with or without atresia, bronchopulmonary sequestration, intestinal duplication cyst, bronchogenic cyst, aberrant systemic arterial supply to the lung, and bronchial mucosal rests in the esophagus. This paper describes 12 cases which illustrate the spectrum of clinical and radiographic features of these anomalies. The embryogenesis of these malformations is reviewed and appropriate radiographic investigation is discussed.

Asymptomatic congenital lung malformations.

Congenital lung malformations are often discovered incidentally on routine prenatal sonography or postnatal imaging. Lesions such as congenital cystic adenomatoid malformations (CCAM), sequestrations, bronchogenic cysts and congenital lobar emphysema may be asymptomatic at birth or at the time of discovery later in life. Some authors advocate simple observation because of the lack of data on the incidence of long-term complications. However, there are very few described cases where CCAM and intralobar sequestration have remained asymptomatic throughout life; complications eventually develop in…
