Aggressive or funerary cannibalism? Skull-cup and human bone manipulation in Cueva de El Toro (Early Neolithic, southern Iberia).

OBJECTIVE: We analyze the processing sequence involved in the manufacture of a skull-cup and the manipulation of human bones from the Early Neolithic of Cueva de El Toro (Málaga, Spain). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Early Neolithic material studied includes human remains found in two separate assemblages. Assemblage A consists of one skull-cup, a non-manipulated adult human mandible, and four ceramic vessels. Assemblage B contains manipulated and non-manipulated human remains that appeared mingled with domestic waste. Using a taphonomic approach, we evaluate the skull-cup processing and the ant

A review of the animal disease outbreaks and biosecure animal mortality composting systems.

Despite the development of new vaccines and the application of rigorous biosecurity measures, animal diseases pose a continuing threat to animal health, food safety, national economy, and the environment. Intense livestock production, increased travel, and changing climate have increased the risk of catastrophic animal losses due to infectious diseases. In the event of an outbreak, it is essential to properly manage the infected animals to prevent the spread of diseases. The most common disposal methods used during a disease outbreak include burial, landfilling, incineration and composting. Bi

An evaluation of stillbirths in İstanbul by examining death certificates.

AIM: Despite the fact that the frequency of stillbirth is estimated to be about the same as that of early neonatal deaths, stillbirth records and statistics are not kept on a regular basis worldwide and their causes cannot be determined. The aim of our study was to examine the causes and characteristics of stillbirths in Istanbul. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All death certificates of 2011 archived in 8 District Cemetery Directorships, which manage 322 cemeteries within the boundaries of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, were examined. Based on the burial licences, weight, gestational weeks, the m

Enzymatic laundry for old clothes: immobilized alpha-amylase from Bacillus sp. for the biocleaning of an ancient Coptic tunic.

The classification and conservation of ancient artworks (belonging to collections) is of important cultural, historical, and economic concern. However, ancient textiles often display structural damage that renders them fragile and unsuitable for exhibition. One of the most common types of damage is linked to erroneous restoration treatments, among which the application of glues to consolidate cuts. Harsh strategies, such as mechanical or chemical treatments, are not suitable since they can cause further impairment of the fabric, whereas mild approaches, like wet cleaning, are often ineffective

The Early Mediaeval manorial estate of Gars/Thunau, Lower Austria: An enclave of endemic tuberculosis?

In recent decades, an increasing number of studies have aimed to shed light on the origin and spread of tuberculosis in past human populations. Here we present the results of a systematic palaeodemographic and palaeopathological survey of the Early Mediaeval population of Gars/Thunau (Lower Austria), which - at this stage - includes 373 individuals recovered at two archaeological sub-sites: a fortified settlement (including a necropolis) at the top of a hill - probably reserved for social and military elites; and a large riverine settlement at the foot of the hill, a so-called 'suburbium', whe

A case of spinal tuberculosis from the middle ages in Transylvania (Romania).

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the paleopathology presented in the skeleton of a 45- to 50-year-old man indicative of tuberculous spondylitis and to confirm by the detection of ancient DNA. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease prevalent in both present and ancient human populations. The disease is primarily located within the lungs; although characteristic bone lesions can lead to a clear diagnosis, skeletal TB occurs in only 5% to 6% of TB infections, even in historical cases. In addition, the visual appearance of human skeletal remai

Experience with helicopter rescue missions for crevasse accidents.

We retrospectively studied incidence, patterns, and severity of injury and hypothermia in 95 victims of crevasse accidents. Fifteen (16%) victims were already dead when the rescue team arrived on the scene. Asphyxia (8 victims) was typically caused by snow burial owing to a collapse of snow bridges covering crevasses and was observed only during winter sports activities on glaciers. In 7 patients, death was caused by lethal trauma. Severe or critical multisystem trauma (ISS ≥ 16) was found in an additional 16 victims (17%). Severe or critical injuries were predominantly thoracic injuries and i

[A review of biographical studies on Goroji Nakagawa, a Japanese pioneer of Jennerian vaccination].

The first detailed biographical study of Goroji Nakagawa, a Japanese pioneer of Jennerian vaccination, dates back to 1885, when Yotoku Onuki wrote his paper on Nakagawa after his field survey in the Matsumae district. Since then information about him gradually began to be compiled by medical historians as well as local historians. Tatsuo Abe, a pediatrician, studied about Nakagawa in depth to publish a monograph entitled "Goroji Nakagawa and the Introduction of Vaccination" in 1943, on the 120th anniversary of the first trial of vaccination by him. This marked a great progress in the biographi

Surgical outcomes of 111 spinal accessory nerve injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Iatrogenic injury to the spinal accessory nerve is not uncommon during neck surgery involving the posterior cervical triangle, because its superficial course here makes it susceptible. We review injury mechanisms, operative techniques, and surgical outcomes of 111 surgical repairs of the spinal accessory nerve. METHODS: This retrospective study examines clinical and surgical experience with spinal accessory nerve injuries at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center during a period of 23 years (1978-2000). Surgery was performed on the basis of anatomic and electrophysio

Getting to the Core of the Matter-Assessing the Role of Replication in Metabarcoding-Based sedaDNA.

Replication is central to most experimental and sampling designs, increasing inferential power and capturing fine-scale data heterogeneity. However, its importance remains poorly evaluated in some ecological and evolutionary settings. This is the case of metabarcoding studies using DNA recovered from sedimentary archives, in which biological signals integrate ecological information through depositional and burial processes, yet are commonly inferred from a single sediment core per site. Here, we evaluated the effect of different types of replication using sedimentary DNA metabarcoding data fro

Effect of orange peel carbon dot immobilized titanium-based metal-organic framework on buckwheat starch/chitosan films and their preservation performance for grapes.

The growing demand for sustainable and active food-packaging materials has encouraged the development of biodegradable films with enhanced functional properties to replace conventional petroleum-based plastics. Orange-peel-derived carbon dots (OPCDs) were synthesised and immobilized onto a titanium-based metal-organic framework to produce a robust hybrid nanofiller (OPCD@Ti-MOF) for incorporation into buckwheat starch/chitosan (BS/CH) biopolymer films for food-packaging applications. Firstly, The OPCD@Ti-MOF was synthesised using solvothermal-assisted mechanical stirring, and the TEM, FTIR, an

Prediction and Controlling Factors of Macrolithotypes in Deep Coal Reservoirs.

Deep coalbed methane (CBM) in the Ordos Basin is a critical resource for China's unconventional gas supply. Accurate identification of coal macrolithotypes is essential for reservoir characterization and guiding efficient exploration and development. However, the deep coal seams in the Ordos Basin feature complex geological conditions and strong spatial heterogeneity. Traditional prediction models exhibit low accuracy at the basin-wide scale, thereby constraining the fine-scale identification of macrolithotypes. This study proposes a machine learning prediction workflow driven by dual geologic

Research and application of rock fracturing pressure prediction method for deep oil reservoirs.

The combination of extreme formation pressure, significant burial depth, and dense lithology in deep and ultra-deep reservoirs results in abnormal fracturing pressure behavior. This phenomenon elevates operational pressures during fracturing acidizing treatments while amplifying associated engineering risks. Precise prediction of both reservoir fracturing pressure and pump injection pressure has become imperative under current technological constraints to ensure operational safety and successful reservoir stimulation. This study establishes a comprehensive fracturing pressure prediction framew
