Effect of Ocimum basilicum L. on cyclo-oxygenase isoforms and prostaglandins involved in thrombosis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ocimum basilicum L. (OBL) is a plant used in traditional Uyghur medicine for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. In previous studies we had found an antihypertensive and antithrombotic effect suggestive of an effect on prostaglandins, which we attempt to document here. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 6-keto-PGF1α, the metabolite of prostacyclin, and PGE2 were measured in the supernatant of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and basal or LPS-stimulated mouse coeliac macrophage cultures exposed to OBL ethanol (OBL-E) extracts and petroleum

Engineered respiro-fermentative metabolism for the production of biofuels and biochemicals from fatty acid-rich feedstocks.

Although lignocellulosic sugars have been proposed as the primary feedstock for the biological production of renewable fuels and chemicals, the availability of fatty acid (FA)-rich feedstocks and recent progress in the development of oil-accumulating organisms make FAs an attractive alternative. In addition to their abundance, the metabolism of FAs is very efficient and could support product yields significantly higher than those obtained from lignocellulosic sugars. However, FAs are metabolized only under respiratory conditions, a metabolic mode that does not support the synthesis of fermenta

Measurement of odor intensity by an electronic nose.

The possibility of using electronic noses (ENs) to measure odor intensity was investigated in this study. Two commercially available ENs, an Aromascan A32S with conducting polymer sensors and an Alpha M.O.S. Fox 3000 with metal oxide sensors, as well as an experimental EN made of Taguchi-type tin oxide sensors, were used in the experiments. Odor intensity measurement by sensory analysis and EN sensor response were obtained for samples of odorous compounds (n-butanol, CH3COCH3, and C2H5SH) and for binary mixtures of odorous compounds (n-butanol and CH3COCH3). Linear regression analysis and arti

One-pot synthesis and property study on thieno[3,2-b]furan compounds.

Based on the regioselective intermolecular Suzuki coupling and subsequent intramolecular Ullmann C-O coupling reactions, one-pot synthesis of benzo[4,5]thieno[3,2-b]benzofurans (BTBFs) was developed after optimization of the reaction conditions including catalysts, solvents, bases, ligands and reaction times. The one-pot reaction, with only 2 mol% Pd(PPh3)4 and 2 mol% copper(i) thiophene-2-carboxylate (CuTc) as the catalysts, K3PO4·3H2O as the base and tert-butanol as the solvent, afforded moderate to good yields (up to 70%) for a variety of substrates.

Switchable Chemoselective Transfer Hydrogenations of Unsaturated Carbonyls Using Copper(I) N-Donor Thiolate Clusters.

Unsaturated alcohols and saturated carbonyls are important chemical, pharmaceutical, and biochemical intermediates. We herein report an efficient transfer hydrogenation protocol in which conversion of unsaturated carbonyl compounds to either unsaturated alcohols or saturated carbonyls was catalyzed by Cu(I) N-donor thiolate clusters along with changing hydrogen source (isopropanol or butanol) and base (NaOH or K2CO3). Mechanistic studies supported by DFT transition state modeling indicate that such a chemoselectivity can be explained by the relative concentrations of Cu(I) monohydride and prot

Nonideality of water-hexafluoropropanol mixtures as studied by X-ray small angle scattering.

Strong temperature dependent low angle X-ray scattering by trifluoroethanol- and hexafluoro-2-propanol-water mixtures was observed in conditions commonly used in NMR work on peptides. At least two types of molecular effects may contribute to the observed scattering: formation of clathrate hydrate-like aggregates of alcohol with water as have been proposed for the similar system tert-butanol-water (Iwasaki, K. and Fujiyama, T. (1976) J. Phys. Chem. 81, 1908-1912) and a further heterogeneity of the solution resulting from immiscibility of the two components.

Studies on the appearance of chalone proteins in subcellular fractions from some bovine tissues. P. II Attempt of isolation of intracellular glycoproteins (chalone) from bovine spleen.

In the course of purification of chalone deriving from the subcellular fractions of bovine spleens, the butanol extraction of smooth and rough microsomes supernatants was performed. After extraction the lower layer was treated with SDS, buffered at pH 5,8. The homogeneity of obtained fractions was investigated by means of polyacrylamide electrophoresis. The antimitotic activity of fractions was performed by colcemide test in mice. There was stated that the cells of spleen contained two chalones. One of them showed antimitotic activity towards spleens of mice, the other towards lymph nodes. The

Negative cooperativity in the formation of two H-bonds with an oxygen H-bond acceptor.

Cooperative effects in H-bond networks can be quantified by measuring the effect of an intramolecular H-bond on the association constant for formation of a second intermolecular H-bond with the same functional group. This approach has been used to quantify the cooperativity associated with the interaction of a phosphoryl oxygen with two H-bond donors. A series of compounds that have an intramolecular H-bond between a phosphinamide oxygen and a phenol hydroxyl group were prepared, using substituents on the phenol to vary the strength of the intramolecular H-bond. The presence of the intramolecu

Greener Decellularization of Porcine Auricular Cartilage Using Supercritical Technology and Different Pretreatments for Application in Tissue Engineering.

Scaffolds for tissue engineering can be obtained from synthetic or natural materials, with decellularized tissues being particularly attractive. Among these, porcine auricular cartilage is of special interest because of its availability, similarity to the human extracellular matrix (ECM), and cost-effectiveness. Decellularization of animal tissues yields extracellular matrices (ECM) rich in collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which are essential for providing mechanical support and creating a favorable environment for cell adhesion and tissue development. Traditional decellulariz

Fatty Acids and Volatile Flavor Components of Adipose Tissue from Local Tibetan Sheep in Qinghai with Dietary Supplementation of Palm Kernel Meal (PKM).

Substituting traditional protein feed with palm kernel meal (PKM) in the diet of Tibetan sheep can be a cost-effective feeding strategy. To determine the impact of PKM on flavor development in different adipose tissues of Tibetan sheep, subjects were fed with 15% and 18% of PKM, while the control group received no PKM. The fatty acids and volatile compounds in the samples were then analyzed by GC-MS and HS-GC-IMS. Adding PKM to the diet significantly increased the C12:0, C14:0, C16:0 and C18:1N9 content in adipose tissues compared with the control, and most of these were associated with flavor

Liquefaction of Oak Wood Using Various Solvents for Bio-oil Production.

Rapidly increasing global energy demand resulting from the growing population and worldwide development has increased the consumption of limited fossil fuel. The usage causes severe environmental deterioration by CO2 emission, which has sparked interest in finding green, renewable, and sustainable alternative sources of energy. Bio-oil, derived from several biomasses via liquefaction, is a promising candidate to replace fossil fuels. Turkey's land (27%) is covered with forested areas (consisting of mostly oak trees). Therefore, it has great potential for cheap lignocellulosic feedstock forest

Nanoemulsion of Sideroxylon obtusifolium as an Alternative to Combat Schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis is caused by the intestinal parasite Schistosoma mansoni. Individuals are affected by schistosomiasis when they are exposed to aquatic environments contaminated with Schistosoma cercariae that emerged from the infected intermediate host mollusk of the genus Biomphalaria. The WHO recommends using molluscicidal products to reduce the snail population and disease transmission. The WHO encourages the search for alternative substances in schistosomiasis control. Natural products are seen as a promising alternative because they are abundant in countries where schistosomiasis is endem
