BACKGROUND: Anilocra capensis Leach, 1818 is the only named species of Anilocra Leach, 1818 from South Africa. Anilocra is a large genus (> 40 species) with high levels of diversity reported from the Caribbean and Indo-West Pacific. Considering it is highly unlikely that all records of Anilocra from South Africa can be of a single species, the aim of this study was to better understand the diversity of Anilocra from this region and continent.
METHODS: To redescribe A. capensis, the syntypes of A. capensis and specimens recorded as A. capensis from Africa were borrowed from the Natural History

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignant neoplasm in children representing the leading cause of death in pediatric oncology. However, studies in the Latin American and Caribbean region are scarce. The objective of this study was to determine the childhood ALL-mortality rates of Ecuador and Peru from 2005 to 2020.
METHODS: We retrieved ALL deaths from the mortality databases of Ecuador and Peru. Age-standardized mortality rates per 100,000 person-years were estimated. Mortality trends were evaluated by country, and sex, between 2005 and 2020 with Joinpoint re…

BACKGROUND: Vaccinations are a critical component of pediatric care, protecting children, including those with cancer, from infectious complications - and significantly improving patient outcomes and survival. However, the practice and perception of vaccinating children with cancer in Latin America and the Caribbean has not been well described.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a convenience sample of healthcare providers involved in caring for children with cancer in Latin America and the Caribbean to establish their knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding vaccinating

As of June 2020 the number of Coronavirus cases in Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean are just under 2.5 million infections and over 140,000 deaths. The health systems in half of the countries in the Americas and the rest of the world have faced the pandemic positioned from different perspectives. While Canada and the United States already had extensive experience in the practice of telemedicine, other countries such as Mexico and the Caribbean, doctors from both private and public sectors have been forced to start practicing medicine remotely. As a result there have been limita

Very little data exist on the incidence and burden of cancer in the individual Caribbean countries. Some data are available for larger areas, reported under a bigger geographical region; Latin America and the Caribbean, but many of the individual countries are not included. One of the main reasons is a lack of official cancer registries. Data are usually collected from hospital records or private physician records, and since it is not in an official registry, these data are not always accessible for inclusion in databases such as SEER and GLOBOCAN. Grenada is one of the countries that currentl

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of leucine-rich repeat transmembrane 3 (LRRTM3) in late-onset Alzheimer disease (AD) by independent genetic epidemiologic and functional studies.
METHODS: First, we explored associations between LRRTM3 single-nucleotide polymorphisms and AD in the National Institute on Aging Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease case-control data set (993 patients and 884 control subjects) and a cohort of Caribbean Hispanics (549 patients and 544 controls) using single-marker and haplotype analyses. Then we explored the effect of LRRTM3 small-hairpin RNAs on amyloid precursor protein p

BACKGROUND: HIV-infected individuals have heightened cancer risk. With the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the frequency of some AIDS-defining cancers (ADC) has decreased although certain non-AIDS-defining cancers (NADC) are becoming more frequent. Cancers among HIV-infected individuals in Latin American and the Caribbean have not yet been carefully studied.
METHODS: Cancer cases among the Caribbean, Central and South American network for HIV Research (CCASAnet) cohort were identified reviewing clinical records and pre-existing databases.
RESULTS: There were 406 cance

Classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious transboundary viral disease of domestic and wild pigs. Despite mass vaccination and continuous eradication programs, CSF remains endemic in Asia, some countries in Europe, the Caribbean and South America. Since June 2013, Northern Colombia has reported 137 CSF outbreaks, mostly in backyard production systems with low vaccination coverage. The purpose of this study was to characterize the virus responsible for the outbreak. Phylogenetic analysis based on the full-length E2 sequence shows that the virus is closely related to CSF virus (CSFV) gen

This study was performed to investigate the potential asymptomatic Leptospira reservoir status among African green monkeys (AGMs) in the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts, and whether there is any renal pathology associated with Leptospira exposure. Forty-eight percent of AGMs tested were positive for Leptospira antibodies by the microscopic agglutination test. Leptospira DNA was detected in 4% of kidney samples tested using a lipl32 gene based PCR. We observed minimal to severe microscopic renal lesions in 85% of the AGM kidneys evaluated. The majority of the AGMs (n = 26) had only minimal to m

Water striders of the genus Limnogonus Stål, 1868 (Insecta: Hemiptera: Gerridae) occur in lentic and calmer lotic habitats across much of the tropics and into the subtropics. In the Americas, there is a long history of confusion over the identity and ranges of the species. Here, I present a review of the genus in North America including the Caribbean based on collection of new specimens from the United States and review of museum specimens. Limnogonusmacroconfusussp. nov. is distinguished based on external and internal morphological characteristics from L. franciscanus (Stål, 1859), which is r

Human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I) isolated in 1980, is a human retrovirus. This CD4+ lymphotropic type C retrovirus is endemic in South Western Japan, the Caribbean region and Africa where it is associated with a rare form of lymphoproliferative disease, adult T cell leukemia. Recently, HTLV-I antibodies has been found in sera and CSF from patients with tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP), a chronic neuromyelopathy of unknown etiology common in tropical areas and in Japanese patients with a similar clinical myelopathy. These data suggest that HTLV-I or an antigenically relate…

Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) has caused unprecedented coral mortality across the Caribbean, and its etiology remains unresolved. SCTLD affects >30 coral species that differ in their associations with dinoflagellate endosymbionts (family Symbiodiniaceae), and symbiont lineage-level dynamics may underlie variation in holobiont disease response. We analyzed 491 apparently healthy and SCTLD-affected corals in Florida (USA) and the United States Virgin Islands, representing 9 coral species sampled in situ or during an SCTLD transmission experiment. Based on the internal transcribed space

The production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in Enterobacteriaceae is the most prevalent resistance mechanism to third-generation cephalosporins. The aim of this study was to identify the ESBLs produced in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates from two hospitals of the Colombian Caribbean Region. A total of 30 clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae (21) and E. coli (9) ESBL-producers were collected in two hospitals from January, 2001 to June, 2003. Isoelectric point values were indicative of SHV-, and CTX-M-type beta-lactamases. PCR amplification and sequencin…

This systematic narrative review synthesized 46 studies concerning felt weight stigma in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), addressing a gap in global stigma research. Drawing from literature in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, the study applied inductive and deductive approaches to analyze the presence of felt weight stigma and the reasons that "mattered most" in the region. The findings confirmed the relevance of felt weight stigma and its associated profound emotional harm, social exclusion, bullying, moral stereotypes, and family issues, with gendered dimensions. While many patterns m

Pediculosis is an infestation of lice on the body, head, or pubic region that occurs worldwide. Lice are ectoparasites of the order Phthiraptera that feed on the blood of infested hosts. Their morphotype dictates their clinical features. Body lice may transmit bacterial pathogens that cause trench fever, relapsing fever, and epidemic typhus, which are potentially life-threatening diseases that remain relevant in contemporary times. Recent data from some settings suggest that head lice may harbor pathogens. The epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and management of body, head, and pubic louse

BACKGROUND: Lutzomyia evansi, a phlebotomine insect endemic to Colombia's Caribbean coast, is considered to be the main vector of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in the region. Although insects of this species can harbor pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms in their intestinal microbiota, there is little information available about the diversity of gut bacteria present in Lutzomyia evansi. In this study, conventional microbiological methods and molecular tools were used to assess the composition of bacterial communities associated with Lutzomyia evansi guts in immature and adult s

Tropical and extra-tropical storms generate extreme waves, impacting both nearby and remote regions through swell propagation. Despite their devastating effects in tropical areas, the contribution of tropical cyclones (TCs) to global wave-induced coastal risk remains unknown. Here, we enable a quantitative assessment of TC's role in extreme waves approaching global coastlines, by designing twin oceanic wave simulations with and without realistic TC wind forcing. We find that TCs substantially contribute to extreme breaking heights in tropical regions (35-50% on average), reaching 100% in high-
