Chemoprophylaxis of meningococcal disease is still necessary in spite of the availability of an effective vaccine against group A, C, Y and W135 strain meningococci. After emergence of sulphonamide resistant meningococcal strains, rifampin has been the drug used for chemoprophylaxis. Development of rifampin resistance in meningococci during short term prophylactic treatments makes this treatment less suitable. At present, there are several studies where ciprofloxacin has shown good effect in eradication of meningococci from nasopharyngeal carriers. It also seems obvious that one single dose of

alpha-Interferon and beta-interferon have been used therapeutically in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection for more than a decade. It is now clear that alpha-interferons are an effective therapy for a proportion of chronic HBV carriers. A course of at least three, and possibly as long as 4 months is required at a dose of 5-10 MU three times a week. Those responding to therapy usually develop a marked hepatitis in the second and third months of therapy, which precedes permanent loss of markers of viral replication. In a proportion of patients, not only are HBe antigen and HBV DNA cleared

Although diphtheria is a rare disease it is necessary to swab contacts of all cases in order to identify carriers. The selection of individuals who should be swabbed and the organisation of mass swabbing so that there is the minimum of delay between collection, culture and reporting are described. With this organisation it is possible for a laboratory to culture at least 1000 swabs in any one day.

Fluorescent antibody techniques have proved advantageous for rapid detection of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli. Previous attempts to adapt these procedures to the rapid identification of Salmonella typhi have been limited by the number of cross-reactions obtained when a polyvalent Salmonella or a S. typhi O conjugate was used to stain faecal smears. The results obtained using a purified Vi conjugate and a S. typhi O, Vi conjugate to screen faecal smears from a number of typhoid carriers are described in this report. The data show that essentially the same number of carriers were found posit
