Efficacy of fluralaner plus moxidectin (Bravecto® Plus spot-on solution for cats) against Otodectes cynotis infestations in cats.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of the fixed combination of fluralaner plus moxidectin for the treatment of Otodectes cynotis infestations was evaluated in cats after topical application. METHODS: Sixteen cats experimentally infested with O. cynotis were allocated randomly to two groups of 8 cats each. One group was treated topically with the fixed combination of fluralaner plus moxidectin at the minimum dose rate of 40 mg fluralaner and 2 mg moxidectin/kg body weight. The other group was treated with physiological saline solution. Before and 14 and 28 days after treatment the ears of all cats were …

2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin raises hearing threshold in normal cats and in cats with Niemann-Pick type C disease.

2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPbetaCD) is a promising experimental therapy for Niemann-Pick type C disease that improved intracellular … oked response (BAER) testing. To further assess the effect of HPbetaCD on hearing threshold, normal cats were administered the drug s.c. at either 4000 mg/kg or 8000 mg/kg body weight, or intrathecally at a dose of 4000 mg/kg brain weight. HPbetaCD caused a significant increase in hearing threshold following one dose of 8000 mg/kg s.c. or 120 mg intrat …

StrayCare Metro: Evaluation of a Targeted Cat Desexing Program to Manage Free-Roaming Cats.

BACKGROUND: Free-roaming cats in Australian cities contribute to wildlife impacts, community concerns, and high shelter intake. We used an observational pre-post evaluation study design of a targeted cat desexing program ("StrayCare Metro") delivered with councils and community partners in four local government areas (LGAs) of Greater Sydney (2022-2024). METHODS: Program records documented cat enrolments and services; council and state databases supplied annual shelter intake, euthanasia, and cat-related complaints; and transect drives in two LGAs (2021 and 2024) estimated cat encounter rates…

Two different genotypes of Bartonella henselae in children with cat-scratch disease and their pet cats.

Two genotypes (I and II) of Bartonella henselae are involved in cat-scratch disease (CSD). Lymph node biopsies were taken from 3 children suffering from CSD, and blood cultures were obtained from their pet cats. Cat-scratch disease was confirmed serologically, histologically and by detection of B. henselae DNA in all 3 lymph nodes by PCR. Bartonella henselae grew in all cats' blood cultures. The first 2 children were siblings. Both children and their pet cats were infected with B. henselae genotype II, and the third patient and her cat were infected with B. henselae genotype I. In all cases, t…

Comparison of the effect of somatostatin on gastrointestinal function in the conscious and anaesthetized cat and on the isolated cat pancreas.

1. Somatostatin, 10 microgram kg-1 hr-1, inhibited gastric acid and pepsin secretion stimulated by pentagastrin, 8 microgram kg-1 hr-1, in conscious and anaesthetized cats with chronically implanted gastric fistulae. In the acutely surgically prepared anaesthetized cat, Somatostatin inhibited pepsin secretion but produced little inhibition of gastric acid secretion or mucosal blood flow. 2. Secretin stimulated pancreatic juice volume was not significantly reduced in acutely prepared anaesthetized cats, but there was a limited reduction of cholecystokinin-pancreozymin stimulated pancreatic amyl…

Bile composition of healthy cats and cats with suspected hepatobiliary disease using point-of-care analyzers: A prospective preliminary study.

Although hepatobiliary disease is common in cats, little is known about the bile composition in either these diseased states or in healthy cats. The objectives of this study were to evaluate several analytes from the bile of healthy cats and to investigate the usefulness of measuring these variables to predict bacterial cholangitis. Cats were prospectively enrolled and divided into 3 groups: 21 healthy cats (group 1) and 14 cats with suspected hepatobiliary disease: 9 without bacterial biliary infection (group 2) and 5 with bacterial biliary infection (group 3). Percutaneous ultrasound-guided …

CT and MRI evaluation of skull bones and soft tissues in six cats with presumed acromegaly versus 12 unaffected cats.

Feline acromegaly is predominantly caused by an adenoma of the pituitary gland, resulting in excessive growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) secretion. In advanced cases, cats will display prominent facial features and upper airway congestion secondary to bony and soft tissue proliferation. The purpose of this study was to describe CT and MRI characteristics of soft tissues and skull bones in six cats with presumed acromegaly and to compare findings with those observed in 12 unaffected cats. In the five acromegalic cats with CT or MRI evidence of a pituitary tumor, frontal bone…

Mastocytaemia in cats: prevalence, detection and quantification methods, haematological associations and potential implications in 30 cats with mast cell tumours.

The significance of mastocytaemia in cats is different from that in dogs because it appears exclusively associated with mast cell neoplasia. The prevalence of mastocytaemia was 0.05% of all feline submissions to a private laboratory and 43% in cats with mast cell neoplasia. None of 30 healthy cats had mastocytaemia. There was no sex bias or significant age difference between mastocytaemic and non-mastocytaemic cats with mast cell tumours (MCT). Buffy coat (BC) examination was the best screening method for detection of mastocytaemia but direct blood film examination was more accurate for quanti…

The Oral Microbiome across Oral Sites in Cats with Chronic Gingivostomatitis, Periodontal Disease, and Tooth Resorption Compared with Healthy Cats.

Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a chronic mucosal and gingival inflammatory disease in which pathogenesis remains unclear. Interactions between the host inflammatory process, the host immune response, and the oral microbiome are implicated in this pathogenesis. To begin to understand this disease and the impact of the microbiome to host inflammatory disease states, we collected sterile noninvasive plaque biofilm samples from ten distinct sites within the oral cavity in cats with stomatitis (n = 12), healthy cats (n = 9), and cats with tooth resorption or periodontitis (n = 11). Anal…

Distribution and antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacterial species in stray cats, hospital-admitted cats, and veterinary staff in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is becoming increasingly important in both human and veterinary medicine. According to the One Health concept, an important step is to monitor the resistance patterns of pathogenic bacteria. In this study, the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and trends of bacteria isolated from stray cats, hospital-admitted cats, and veterinary staff in South Korea between 2017 and 2018 were investigated. RESULTS: The minimum inhibitory concentrations of different antibiotics for Staphylococcus spp., Enterobacteriaceae, and Enterococcus spp. were determined to establ…

Evaluation of Bronchoscopy and Bronchoalveolar Lavage Findings in Cats With Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in Comparison to Cats With Feline Bronchial Disease.

The cat lungworm Aelurostrongylus abstrusus is a cause of lower respiratory tract disease worldwide. Bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) are important tools for diagnosing respiratory diseases in cats. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the usefulness of bronchoscopy and BAL in the diagnosis of A. abstrusus. Findings from bronchoscopic examination and BAL of 24 naturally infected cats were evaluated and compared with those of 12 cats with idiopathic Feline Bronchial Diseases (FBDs). Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney or Fisher's exact tests. No significant bronchos…

Feline calicivirus and other respiratory pathogens in cats with Feline calicivirus-related symptoms and in clinically healthy cats in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Cats with feline calicivirus (FCV)-related symptoms are commonly presented to veterinary practitioners. Various clinical manifestations have been attributed to FCV, i.e. upper respiratory tract disease (URTD), oral ulcerations, gingivostomatitis, limping syndrome and virulent systemic disease. Additionally, healthy cats can shed FCV. The aims of this study were 1) to investigate the frequency of FCV in cats with FCV-related symptoms and in healthy cats in Switzerland, 2) to assess risk and protective factors for infection, such as signalment, housing conditions, vaccination, and co…
