OBJECTIVE: To assess volumetric changes in the spinal cord at the cervicomedullary junction, diameter of the cervicomedullary cord, and width of the brainstem following posterior fossa decompression (PFD).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of adult patients with Chiari malformation who underwent PFD was performed. Segmentations were done on clinical quality T2-weighted cervical magnetic resonance images obtained before and after decompression using ITK-SNAP. Volumes of neural tissue within the cervicomedullary junction were evaluated from 10 mm cranial to the medullary beak to the cervical sp

The present case study aimed to demonstrate the subtle effectiveness of 13-year chiropractic maintenance care (MC) in a patient with cervical radiculopathy associated with retrolisthesis. Retrolisthesis is the backward slippage of one vertebral body with respect to the subjacent vertebra. This slippage can lead to spinal nerve root compression or irritation (radiculopathy). A 44-year-old woman presented with relapsing episodes of pain in her neck radiating down her right arm and hand for 12 months. Neurological examination revealed sensory deficits in the right C5 dermatome. Cervical radiograp

The purpose of our study was to demonstrate the clinical and radiographic findings in patients with dysphagia and ventral osteophytes of the cervical spine due to degeneration or as a typical feature of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH, Forestier Disease). Since 2003 we encountered 20 patients with such changes in the cervical spine causing an impairment of deglutition. A total of 12 patients had one solitary pair of osteophytes of neighboring vertebrae, 4 patients revealed two pairs and 4 patients had triple pairs of osteophytes. Thirty-two osteophytes were observed totally. A t

Klippel-Feil syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by fusion of cervical vertebrae. We describe the case of a 45-year-old female presenting with nonspecific neurological symptoms which was discovered to be due to undiagnosed Klippel-Feil syndrome. This case is unique due to presentation in adulthood as this condition is usually diagnosed in childhood due to visual asymmetries. Additionally, we highlight the value of multimodal imaging and diagnostics when attempting to delineate overlapping pathologies related to the cervical spine.

Two patients with neck-tongue syndrome, a rare disorder of the upper cervical nerves that results in paroxysmal neck pain and paresthesia of the tongue, are described. Signs are the result of compression of the C2 root by disorders affecting the first two cervical vertebrae. Conservative management is effective in most cases if no masses are in the involved area. The disorder has been observed rarely in children. Clinical onset occurred at 6 and 11 years of age, respectively, in the reported patients.

Klippel-Feil anomaly is characterized by the fusion of two or more cervical vertebrae. Most cases are sporadic but dominant and recessive inheritance are well described. Associated anomalies such as a cleft palate are common. We describe a unique family with autosomal dominantly inherited Klippel-Feil anomaly in six individuals associated with a cleft palate in four. One patient, a child, has a cleft palate only but may develop radiological cervical fusion with time, as documented in two other family members.

A severe case of kyphoscoliosis was observed in the skeletal remains of a male from the late Edo period in Japan. This individual exhibited left curvature thoracic scoliosis and kyphotic deformity, with ankylosis of the fifth to twelfth thoracic vertebrae at the intervertebral joints. The Cobb angle was 77° and the kyphotic angle was 76°. The superior articular facet of the cervical vertebrae was lower on the left side than the right side. Additionally, the sacral base was inclined to the right, resulting in the superior articular process and facet being lower on the right than on the left. Th…

Spondylocostal dysostosis is a rare condition characterized by short stature due to a short trunk, multiple morphological abnormalities of the vertebrae and ribs due to malsegmentation of the axial skeleton. Radiological features include reduced number of vertebrae and ribs, hemivertebrae, fused or sagitally cleft vertebrae or multiple rib fusions. Three distinct clinical entities are described. We report nine cases of this syndrome, seven were infants and presented with an abnormal shape of the thorax. Two of them had a meningocoele, and one succumbed to the CNS anomalies on the third day of

The aim of this work was to investigate the postnatal development of the feline spinal cord. Our study showed that the main period of growth leading to the cervical and lumbar enlargements begins after birth and is completed at the age of 5-6 months. Comparing the relationship between the length of the spinal cord and the vertebral column, we found that in contrast to the adult cat, in the newborn cat, length, area and volume of segments show similar values along the spinal cord. This also applied to the length of the vertebrae. Due to a heterogeneous growth, not all segments of the spinal cor

The white-eared opossum present a higher roadkill number in Brazil, and the vertebral column is often affected when some type of trauma occurs. Thus, this study describes the osteology and radiology of the vertebral column in white-eared opossum to serve as a basis for support in the veterinary clinical care, since the casuistry of care of this marsupial has increased every year. Radiographs of the cervical (C), thoracic (T), lumbar (L), sacral (S) and caudal (Cd) segments of the vertebral column were taken in thirty-five white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris). Furthermore, ten opossums

Seventy-eight patients with confirmed primary cervical dystonia CD were studied. All patients underwent CT of the soft tissues of the neck using slices at cervical vertebrae and MRI images of the cervical spine and of soft tissues. MRI images of 50 patients who did not have CD were used for comparison. This was followed by measuring the largest diameter along with the description of the shape of all observable muscles including the small muscles of the occipital area. In lateral flexion and rotation, 19% of patients showed disorders of muscles acting on head joints (laterocaput/torticaput). Mu…

BACKGROUND: Intervertebral cages used in clinical applications were often general products with standard specifications, which were challenging to match with the cervical vertebra and prone to cause stress shielding and subsidence.
OBJECTIVE: To design and fabricate customized tantalum (Ta) intervertebral fusion cages that meets the biomechanical requirements of the cervical segment.
METHODS: The lattice intervertebral cages were customized designed and fabricated by the selective laser melting. The joint and muscle forces of the cervical segment under different movements were analyzed using

BACKGROUND: Vagus nerve stimulation is increasingly applied to treat epilepsy, psychiatric conditions and potentially chronic heart failure. After implanting vagus nerve electrodes to the cervical vagus nerve, side effects such as voice alterations and dyspnea or missing therapeutic effects are observed at different frequencies. Cervical vagus nerve branching might partly be responsible for these effects. However, vagus nerve branching has not yet been described in the context of vagus nerve stimulation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Branching of the cervical vagus nerve was investigated macroscopic
