We evaluated various patient characteristics in patients hospitalized for asthma during 1987 to 1990. Potentially fatal asthma was identified in 26 of 87 adult patients (29.9 percent) hospitalized. Most density-pathology research has assumed that dense living conditions have 'pathological' effects on urban dwellers. This study considers the possibility that both low and high density may be problematic and that in-unit and out-unit density may have interacting effects. The data included all first admissions from Chicago to 44 in-patient psychiatric facilities in Illinois during 1960-61. STUDY DESIGN: A case report of thoracic spinal cord compression in a 34-year-old male with beta-thalassemia is reported.
OBJECTIVES: In patients with thalassemia, neurologic complaints should lead to a high index of suspicion for spinal cord compression from marrow expansion, ectopic bone formation and resultant stenosis. Disease of the breast is uncommon in the adolescent female. Of 25,650 surgical specimens examined at The Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago from 1974 through 1985, only 40 lesions were of adolescent breast origin in females. The ages of the patients ranged from 12 to 22 years. The most common lesion was fibroadenoma (19) followed by gigantomastia and cystosarcoma phyllodes. Ruptured ectopic pregnancy constitutes a major gynecologic emergency that may result in death. From January 1968 through December 1975, 313 patients with ectopic pregnancy were treated at Chicago Lying-In Hospital. The historical and physical findings, diagnostic procedures, causative factors and patient management are reviewed and discussed. The most common symptoms were abdominal pain and amenorrhea. High rates of drug use have been documented among young men who have sex with men (YMSM). However, updated prevalence data are needed to understand current trends, especially for drug use before sex. We used baseline data from an HIV prevention trial to examine demographic differences in drug use (in general and before sex) among YMSM in Atlanta, Chicago, and NYC. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to describe infection rates after intrauterine device (IUD) placement at an urban teaching hospital that did not restrict IUD eligibility based on risk factors for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

In mid-2022, an mpox outbreak occurred in the United States and more than 100 countries, disproportionately affecting men who have sex with men (MSM). Initially, the U.S. public health system failed to deploy tests, treatment, and vaccines effectively.
