Development of the normal gastrointestinal microflora of specific pathogen-free chickens.

The development of the normal intestinal microflora of the small intestine, caecum and large intestine of specific pathogen-free (SPF) chickens, was studied in the period from hatching to 84 days of age. No bacteria were detected in any of the sites at hatchery (day 1), but by day 3 significant levels of faecal streptococci and coliforms were isolated from all sites. The flora of the small intestine was limited to faecal streptococci and coliforms for the first 40 days and then lactobacilli became established and dominated the flora. A large variety of facultative and strictly anaerobic organi…

[Triploidy as a possible cause of intersexuality in chickens (Gallus domesticus)].

A number of cases of intersexuality occurred in a fairly large number of cases in 6-8 months-old laying hens on two poultry farms in the province of Limburg. When macroscopic and microscopic studies failed to supply any evidence concerning the cause of the considerable development of the right gonad, it was decided to do a chromosome analysis. Three intersexes in which the chromosomes were studied, were found to be triploid birds showing a ZZW sex chromosome combination, which aberration may have been the cause of the intersexuality observed.

Mortality from heat stress in broiler chickens influenced by anticoccidial drugs.

The relationship of anticoccidial drug to heat stress mortality in broilers was studied in a replicated floor-pen experiment during a period of hot weather in Georgia. Overall mortality during the 8-week study averaged 6% in unmedicated and monensin-medicated birds or lasalocid-medicated birds, 10% in arprinocid-medicated birds, and 36% in nicarbazin-medicated birds. Most of the death losses were attributed to heat stress. Maximum death losses coincided with three periods of hot weather, when the birds were 22, 33, or 49 days old. Of 114 dead birds in the nicarbazin treatment, 68 were male and

Comparative Growth Performance and Intestinal Morphological Development Between Liangshan Yanying Chicken and Arbor Acres Chicken During the Brooding Stage.

The differences in growth performance and intestinal morphology between Liangshan Yanying Chicken (YYJ) and Arbor Acres (AA) broilers during the brooding stage, and to explore the effect of early intestinal development on growth. A total of 120 one-day-old male chicks of each breed were selected and randomly divided into three groups, reared under the same conditions for 28 days to measure body weight, feed intake, and intestinal morphological indices. The results showed that the body weight of AA broilers at 28 days of age was 3.24 times that of YYJ; the average daily gain and average daily f

A first complete catalog of highly expressed genes in eight chicken tissues reveals uncharacterized gene families specific for the chicken testis.

Based on next-generation sequencing, we established a repertoire of differentially overexpressed genes (DoEGs) in eight adult chicken tissue … ed paralogs without orthologs in other metazoans except birds: these families are thus specific for chickens/birds.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Comparative next-generation sequencing analysis of eight chicken tissues showed that the testis has highest proportion of long noncoding RNA and protein-coding genes of the whole genome. We identified new genes in the chicken …

Enterococcus faecium PNC01 isolated from the intestinal mucosa of chicken as an alternative for antibiotics to reduce feed conversion rate in broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: The development and utilization of probiotics had many environmental benefits for replacing antibiotics in animal production. Bacteria in the intestinal mucosa have better adhesion to the host intestinal epithelial cells compared to bacteria in the intestinal contents. In this study, lactic acid bacteria were isolated from the intestinal mucosa of broiler chickens and investigated as the substitution to antibiotic in broiler production. RESULTS: In addition to acid resistance, high temperature resistance, antimicrobial sensitivity tests, and intestinal epithelial cell adhesion, En…

Hexon and fiber gene changes in an attenuated fowl adenovirus isolate from Malaysia in embryonated chicken eggs and its infectivity in chickens.

Fowl adenovirus (FAdV) is distributed worldwide and causes economic losses in the poultry industry. The objectives of this study were to determine the hexon and fiber gene changes in an attenuated FAdV isolate from Malaysia in specific pathogen-free chicken embryonated eggs (SPF CEE) and its infectivity in commercial broiler chickens. SPF CEE were inoculated with 0.1 mL FAdV inoculum via the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) for 20 consecutive passages. The isolate at passage 20 (E20), with a virus titer of 108.7TCID50/mL (TCID50, 50% tissue culture infective dose), was inoculated (0.5 mL) into o…

Immunocytochemical localization of 140 kD cell adhesion molecules in cultured chicken fibroblasts, and in chicken smooth muscle and intestinal epithelial tissues.

A monoclonal antibody (JG22 MAb) that was previously raised to a chick embryo myogenic cell preparation had been shown to produce rounding and other morphological changes in myogenic cells in culture, and, in some cases, their detachment from the substratum. In other studies it was shown that the epitope recognized by JG22 was associated with a set of 140 kD cell surface glycoproteins. It is shown that this antigen occurs in a wide variety of cell types; in cultured fibroblasts, it is distributed equally between the dorsal and ventral cell surfaces shortly after plating, but appears to become

Identification of a microbial sub-community from the feral chicken gut that reduces Salmonella colonization and improves gut health in a gnotobiotic chicken model.

A complex microbial community in the gut may prevent the colonization of enteric pathogens such as Salmonella. Some individual or a combination of species in the gut may confer colonization resistance against Salmonella. To gain a better understanding of the colonization resistance against Salmonella enterica, we isolated a library of 1,300 bacterial strains from feral chicken gut microbiota which represented a total of 51 species. Using a co-culture assay, we screened the representative species from this library and identified 30 species that inhibited Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica

Probiotic Lactobacilli Do Not Protect Chickens against Salmonella Enteritidis Infection by Competitive Exclusion in the Intestinal Tract but in Feed, Outside the Chicken Host.

Lactobacilli are commonly used as probiotics in poultry to improve production parameters and to increase chicken resistance to enteric infections. However, lactobacilli do not efficiently colonise the chicken intestinal tract, and also, their anti-infection effect in vivo is sometimes questionable. In this study, we therefore evaluated the potential of a mixture of four Lactobacillus species (L. salivarius, L. reuteri, L. ingluviei and L. alvi) for the protection of chickens against Salmonella Enteritidis infection. Whenever the chickens were inoculated by lactobacilli and S. Enteritidis separ…

Chicken anaemia virus inoculated by the oral route causes lymphocyte depletion in the thymus in 3-week-old and 6-week-old chickens.

There have been many reports of the severe clinical disease and pathology seen in young chicks that have been vertically infected with chicken anaemia virus (CAV). The disease is characterized by anaemia, and atrophy of the thymus and bone marrow. However, while it has been suggested that horizontally acquired infections of older birds are common, to date there has been no description in the literature of the pathology of this type of infection. In the present study, 3-week-old and 6-week-old chickens were infected by the oral route, as is likely to occur naturally, and a wide range of tissues…

Chicken thymocyte-specific antigens identified by monoclonal antibodies: characterization and distribution in normal tissues and in tumoral tissues from Marek's disease chicken.

Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were obtained against purified thymocyte membrane extracts. Five MAbs TA3, TB1, TB6 (IgG1), TC4, and TA1 (IgG2a), were tested by immunofluorescence and by immunoperoxidase tests against normal cells from different organs, Marek's disease (MD) cell lines, and MD tumoral cells from chickens. Three of them, TA3, TB1, and TB6, reacted exclusively with lymphoid cells in both cortical and medullary areas of the thymus and with less than 8% bursa cells. They identified a protein of apparently 40 kD. The other two revealed antigenic determinants on most medullar thymocytes…
