BACKGROUND: Armed conflicts have major indirect health impacts in addition to the direct harms from violence. They create enduring political instability, destabilise health systems, and foster negative socioeconomic and environmental conditions-all of which constrain efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality. The detrimental impacts of conflict on global maternal and child health are not robustly quantified. This study assesses the association between conflict and maternal and child health globally.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Data for 181 countries (2000-2019) from the Uppsala Conflict Data P

Background/Objectives: Reports detailing rehabilitative interventions for infants with severe dermatologic disorders are scarce. Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a genetic disorder characterized by skin fragility, which causes blistering after minor trauma. Since there is still no cure in general clinics, symptomatic treatment and developmental support are essential for managing the condition. While physiotherapy and occupational therapy guidelines for EB exist, descriptions of neonatal habilitation/rehabilitation are insufficient. Case: This case report describes the longitudinal habilitation/re

BACKGROUND: Children exposed to violence are at risk of a range of adverse outcomes. Given the unique cultural and social context, understanding what fosters children's resilience in resource-limited areas such as sub-Saharan Africa, is vital.
OBJECTIVES: Using data from the International Survey of Children's Well-Being (ISCWeB), this paper explores individual-, family-, and school-level factors associated with positive outcomes for children who have experienced some form of violence in Khomas region, Namibia.
METHOD AND PARTICIPANTS: Using a cross-sectional survey design, the ISCWeB questio

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2016eng
This article reviews the manifestations and risk factors associated with osteoporosis in childhood, the definition of osteoporosis and recommendations for monitoring and prevention. As well, this article discusses when a child should be considered a candidate for osteoporosis therapy, which agents should be prescribed, duration of therapy and side effects. There has been significant progress in our understanding of risk factors and the natural history of osteoporosis in children over the past number of years. This knowledge has fostered the development of logical approaches to the diagnosis, m

BACKGROUND: Exposure to prenatal stress is associated with later adverse health and adjustment outcomes. This is generally presumed to arise through early environmentally mediated programming effects on the foetus. However, associations could arise through factors that influence mothers' characteristics and behaviour during pregnancy which are inherited by offspring.
METHOD: A 'prenatal cross-fostering' design where pregnant mothers are related or unrelated to their child as a result of in vitro fertilization (IVF) was used to disentangle maternally inherited and environmental influences. If

OBJECTIVE: Many women who experience child or adolescent sexual assault (CASA) are revictimized as adults. Although researchers have made considerable progress in understanding mechanisms that increase risk for adult revictimization, including CASA-related posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), few have explored factors that protect against this association. Drawing from the resilience portfolio model and prior research, this study examined perceived social support, gratitude, self-compassion, and optimism as potential strengths-based factors that may reduce revictimization risk.

Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorder poses significant risks to maternal health, given the complexities of screening, diagnosis, and management. To address these challenges, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) hosted a workshop on June 10-11, 2024, bringing together expert health care professionals, researchers, stakeholders, and patient advocates to identify knowledge gaps, with an overarching goal of informing future research and best practices for PAS. Key discussions revolved around the resources and infrastructure needed to advan

This study aimed to extend previous research on the experiences and factors that impact law enforcement personnel when working with distressing materials such as child sexual abuse content. A sample of 22 law enforcement personnel working within one law enforcement organisation in England, United Kingdom participated in anonymous semi-structured interviews. Results were explored thematically and organised in the following headings: "Responses to the material", "Impact of working with distressing evidence", "Personal coping strategies" and "Risks and mitigating factors". The aim of this work is to describe the experience of being a mother by women who together with their children stay on the ward after cardiac surgical correction of congenital heart defects. The research material consisted of the narratives of mothers whose children were born with a heart defect and surgically treated. Four women aged 21-30 years were participants of this study. The age of the subjects' children ranged from 5 weeks to 1 year and three months. The heart defects with which the children were born were hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS ) or atrioventricular canal defect. The r

Children born to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected mothers often do not live with a biologic parent because of drug use, illness, or death of the mother. Public health officials need to know the number and proportion of children who will require care by someone other than a biologic parent (alternative care giver). The Pediatric Spectrum of Disease project, conducted in six different geographic regions in the United States, assesses issues specific to HIV in children. Among the information being collected in this study are data regarding the primary care giver. Of 1683 children born

BACKGROUND: Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common childhood condition characterised by excessive distress related to separation from attachment figures, often leading to social, emotional, and academic difficulties. If untreated, SAD can increase the risk of future psychopathology, highlighting the importance of effective interventions.
AIM: This scoping review systematically maps and analyzes the current evidence on intervention strategies to reduce separation anxiety and promote emotional and social well-being in children.
METHOD: Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework and PRISM

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between various forms of child nutritional disorders and early childhood development in Bangladesh.
DESIGN: We analysed data from the nationally representative cross-sectional 2019 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey. Early childhood development was evaluated using the Early Childhood Development Index (ECDI), which comprised 10 yes-or-no questions across four domains: literacy-numeracy, physical well-being, socio-emotional development, and learning abilities. The present study is anchored in the view that hope is a resource that fosters better coping and parenting. It examines the self-perceived hope and parental role of parents whom the welfare services in Israel have assessed as maltreating their children. The parents were recruited in 2010 through facilities for maltreated children. The study sample consisted of 262 parents (68.4% response rate), divided into those who had at least one child removed from home and those whose children were all at home. Both groups of parents reported moderately high basic and family hope and sense of pathways and

OBJECTIVE: To identify the prevalence rate of mental disorders among Ontario children who are permanent wards and also the key practice and descriptive variables associated with their diagnostic status.
METHOD: I reviewed case files from a stratified random sample of 429 Ontario children who were permanent wards with no access to biological parents on December 31, 2003. Data abstracted from files included information on descriptive variables (such as age, sex, and type of permanent ward), all disorders (that is, mental and other current medical diagnoses and disabilities), family history, mal

Youth in foster care represent a unique population with complex mental and behavioral health, social-emotional, and developmental needs. For this population with special healthcare needs, the risk for adverse long-term outcomes great if needs go unaddressed or inadequately addressed while in placement. Although outcomes are malleable and effective interventions exist, there are barriers to optimal healthcare delivery. The general pediatrician as advocate is paramount to improve long-term outcomes.
